EPD Releases Additional Information on Tragic Highway 101 Incident

Press release from the Eureka Police Department:

Traffic Collision not paid forOn March 2, 2024, at approximately 9:20 p.m., Eureka Police Department (EPD) officers, along with Humboldt Bay Fire (HBF) personnel, were dispatched to a single vehicle traffic collision that occurred on N/B Hwy 101 just south of Airport Road. It was reported that the involved vehicle had left the roadway on the east side of Hwy 101 and the driver ejected from the vehicle. EPD and HBF personnel arrived on scene and immediately began providing medical care to the driver. The driver was the only occupant of the vehicle. The driver, a 19 year old female from Arcata, was transported to a local hospital by City Ambulance for major, life threatening injuries.

The exact cause of the collision is still under investigation, but it appears a combination of speed, wet roadways, and the winter weather were contributing factors. There are no indications at this time that alcohol or drugs were a factor.

The Eureka Police Department wants to remind motorist that during inclement weather to slow down, be aware of the road conditions, and drive with due regard for your safety and the safety of others using our roadways.

Prayers for this young woman and her family and friends.

A tragic reminder to all of us to slow down! Especially in bad weather.

“Adjust your speed for different conditions: Wet road: Reduce your speed by 5 to 10 mph. Packed snow: Reduce your speed by half. Ice: Reduce your speed to no more than 5 mph.”

Wear your seatbelts kids. The very least it does is keep you in the driving position, giving you a better chance at regaining control, or riding it out inside the vehicle. All the safety systems in modern cars working together really do help reduce injuries, and save lives.

Better to be late than never getting there at all.
