Highway 20 Open to One-Way Traffic Due to Major Collision

traffic accidentA traffic accident that occurred in Lake County just before 1 p.m. today, March 3, is still impeding Highway 20 traffic.

According to the CHP Traffic Incident Information page, a black, GMC pickup and a red, Toyota Corolla collided near Blue Lakes, just east of the Mendocino/Lake County line. Though both vehicles were reported off the roadway, the log stated that both lanes were blocked, likely due to assisting emergency personnel.

As of 4:09 p.m. this afternoon, the roadway is opened to one-way controlled traffic according to the Caltrans QuickMap. Traffic is impacted from 1/2 mi West of Lodge at Blue Lakes to 1/4 mi West of Lodge at Blue Lakes, with the eastbound lane with serious congestion.

Though fire, CHP, and Caltrans have been on scene since shortly after the collision, and tow trucks were requested hours ago, the scene remains snarled due to accident investigation.

Injuries, if any, are unknown at this time. Though the accident investigation is ongoing, this incident has been pulled from the CHP log. According to Mendocino Action News, this is possibly a fatal collision.

Many people stopped to assist and try to ensure people and animals involved were attended to. Godspeed to the deceased. Godbless many that stopped and were there for support for this unfortunate accident.

Thank you, RHBB! We were stopped on our way back from Ukiah, heading east to Upper Lake, at a little before 2 pm. We waited for some time and then saw cars turning around and heading back west toward the west end of Blue Lakes and Blue Lakes Road. We decided to take a chance and do the same. Blue Lakes Road is very narrow and altho basically paved, its condition is lousy for most of its length and in many places only one lane wide. Also subject to slides,I’m sure. We got through fine although we were dismayed by the number of cars passing us in the other direction, suggesting a blockage farther down BL Road. Turned out they were cars stopped going west from UL to 101, and the BL Road was open all the way. We emerged at the east junction with Hwy 20 and got home. We didn’t see the accident scene. Please, everyone, drive slowly and carefully on this stretch. Remember my old daddy’s motto: It’s better to arrive late than not to arrive.

Unless someone decided to lay on the road with a blanket over them next to the red toyota…..someone is dead. It’s sad to see. I drove past it at 230pm
