Again, Green Diamond. Burning ginormous slash piles that have been sitting and become habitat is NOT prescribed burning.
Slash piles as big as a house have been left on landings for years by Green Diamond. Again, not prescribed burning–just waste cleanup that should have been done long since, according to CalFire regulations:
917.2 Treatment of Slash to Reduce Fire Hazard [Coast], 937.2 Treatment of Logging Slash to Reduce Fire Hazard in the Northern Forest District [Northern], 957.2 Treatment of Slash to Reduce Fire Hazard [Southern]
(a) Slash to be treated by piling and burning shall be treated as follows:
(1) Piles created prior to September 1 shall be treated not later than April 1 of the year following its creation, or within 30 days following climatic access after April 1 of the year following its creation.
(2) Piles created on or after September 1 shall be treated not later than April 1 of the second year following its creation, or within 30 days following climatic access after April 1 of the second year following its creation.
Again, Prescribed burning no matter what you claim.
It’s falls under the umbrella of Rx burning. So, yes it is! The piles do provide habitat for critters but they were able to scurry into them so they will be scrambling out of them once ignition commences
not always the case for mole salamanders. they like to hunker down at the dirt level of these piles. luckily this warm weather has them on the go and into the waterways to breed. I have seen several browns lately on my driveway at night heading to the creek. I think there should be a time limit for dealing with slash piles, like 6 months.
They better get er done soon. Lot’s of heavy weather coming in.
I dismantled a slash pile on my property so I could burn it in a legal fire pit. I will never burn a pile again based on what I found living in the pile. 100s of salamanders, several of which were moles.
