Eli Pence Joins HAF+WRCF as Newest Board Member
This is a press release from the Humboldt Area Foundation + Wild Rivers Community Foundation:
Eli Pence
Humboldt Area Foundation + Wild Rivers Community Foundation is proud to announce its newest board member: Eli Pence, sociologist, trans activist, and academic advisor at Cal Poly Humboldt.
“We are excited to welcome Eli as a new board member,” said Charlie Jordan, Chair of HAF+WRCF’s board of directors. “He brings his experience in education and sociology to the board and provides representation of the LGBTQ+ community, which furthers our ability to serve all within our area.”
Pence, who grew up in Branscomb, California, earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology and Anthropology from Mills College in 2005 and a Master’s Degree in Sociology from Cal Poly Humboldt in 2010. For the last 10 years he has worked as a lecturer at the university with emphasis on ethnic and women’s studies. He also serves as an academic advisor with Humboldt’s TRIO Student Support Services Program, helping low-income, first-generation students gain success in college and beyond.
Before joining the university, Pence was the Student Research Program Director at the California Center for Rural Policy (CCRP), where he created a research program for low-income and indigenous middle and high school students that combined community service, college readiness and self-efficacy.
“It is an honor to be able to leverage my privilege and connections to help our local communities in real, material ways,” Pence said. “I’m so excited to support amazing social justice initiatives and programs, as well as represent the interests of the queer-trans community in my service.”
When he’s not teaching, advising and grant writing at the college level, he volunteers as a steering committee member for the Eureka Bike Kitchen and, previously, for Food For People, the Humboldt County food bank. His personal interests include road cycling, hanging out with his dogs, and doing yard work.
Pence is one of 15 board members of HAF+WRCF, which serves Trinity, Del Norte and Humboldt counties in California, and Curry County in Oregon, as well as the 26 Tribal Nations and Indigenous Territories across this region. The foundation’s strategy focuses on building a “Just Economy, Healthy Ecosystems and Environments, Thriving Youth and Families, and Racial Equity.” The Foundation’s board oversees affiliates such as the Humboldt Health Foundation, the Native Cultures Fund, the Redwood Region CORE Hub, and other major initiatives. I wanted to say something sarcastic but…he likes to hang out with his dogs? That’s usually the sign of a good person! Congratulations!!
or is it just resume filler….
Maybe. But I’ve found that people who are good to dogs are almost always decent people.
A diversity hire to appease the fascists…
At least she hits all the boxes … well, I guess, not *all* of them. She’s still whyte.
HAF is riding for a fall. Their charter is as a fiduciary. Their “charity” is other people’s money yet they are acting as if it is their own. Some family of one of their contributors is going to sue them sooner or later as violating their trust and forcecan audit. It will be ugly. And it is suicidal of HAF no matter how cleverly their lawyers had at it.
What have they done improperly? I struggle to recall hearing much of anything about the organization and am primarily familiar with it from passing their sign on the Indianola cut off.
Congratulations Eli. HAF will benefit from having such a thoughtful community minded person serving on the board.
Totally. He’s bringing great perspective. And based on some of the comments here, it’s needed more than ever.
What is wrong with these submissive anti-woodsy men?
We could never duplicate the luxury we find ourselves in today had we had to construct it through the labor of “nice” people like this man who studies woman’s issues and gender issues.
I don’t even like the meat head masculinity the trump boners offer,
, but seriously..
This weak society blows.
We are over
Eli was born a woman …
Then my point is even more relevant,
strangely
babies arent adults; no one is born a woman; you weren’t born a man, and you still arent
We aren’t born human then either I presume, that’s all culture added on through socialization.
There is no up or down, only the endgame
Trans ideology is mental illness. 20 years ago nobody was confused about their gender it’s this whole “woke” nonsense that’s destroying America. The rest of the world is laughing at us
Just think. Nobody brought this up at all except you.
So.
Why does “trans ideology” trigger you so much?
Are you “confused?”
True, much of the rest of world is laughing. Laughing at how insecure part of America is and has increasingly become. At how insecure they’ve been led-by-the-nose to be, by certain think-tank Sevengali’s and spin-masters helping manage the far-ring airwaves. The broadcast message, of those brightest minds? “Feel threatened by drag shows, unicorn emoji’s, and (gasp) rainbow flags. The Others, they are coming for your sons and daughters … they are coming for YOU”. Has even woodsy-men all aflutter.
If someone can’t be honest about their own gender, how can you trust them to have integrity with other issues?
Taters gonna tate.
Congrats on the new role. Great to have diverse perspectives add to the local impact of HAF.
Barf. Get this mental case into an institution where it belongs
I’ve known Eli for around ten years now and he has been such a truly compassionate, caring and thoughtful person and one of the best friends I’ve ever had. I’m so proud of you Eli. Congratulations Humboldt area foundation, he’s amazing.
