Press release from Caltrans:

Caltrans is reaching out to the public for valuable input on the design of a new welcome sign or monument to be installed at the Oregon border along U.S. Route 199 in Del Norte County.

The outdated welcome sign at the Oregon border is set to be replaced with a new monument, and Caltrans wants the community’s feedback on its design.

As a component of Governor Gavin Newsom’s Clean California initiative, this project aligns with the broader mission of creating a welcoming atmosphere and enhancing public spaces throughout the Golden State.

To actively participate in shaping the visual identity of the new monument, community members are encouraged to complete a brief survey. The survey can be accessed here, and responses are requested through Sunday, January 28.

Caltrans values the public’s insights and believes this collaborative effort will result in a monument that resonates with the community.

The installation of the new welcome monument is anticipated within the next year.

About Clean California:

The Clean California initiative is a sweeping $1.2 billion, multiyear clean-up effort led by Caltrans to remove trash, create thousands of jobs, and engage communities to transform public spaces. The new sign should read, Welcome to Mexifornia where all illegal aliens will receive free medical care, housing and food.

What is ‘outdated’ about that sign ?
Welcome to California along with the State Flower ?

CalTrans should spend that $1.2 Billion of the working peoples money on fixing the roads.

Go figure.

PS to Redhead Blackbelt… link to survey site is not working.

I was thinking the same thing. Hard to think about it being “outdated”. The exact sign is also on 101 in Smith River. Does that sign get replaced as well?

The survey is designed in a manipulative way. It never asks the important question, “Do you support the spending of taxpayer money to replace the current sign?”.

I went and used the first question that allows a written response to share my opinion that replacement of the current perfectly good (and actually nice) sign is an irresponsible waste of taxpayer money. Waste of taxpayer money is always irresponsible. When the state has a deficit such waste is doubly irresponsible. The state government takes much from us and misappropriates a disgusting portion.

It should read “Welcome to Comifornia.” and if they must replace the picture of the state flower, they could replace it with a picture of a ruthless dictator. That would represent what the state has become.

I thought dictators cracked down on dissent.
And yet here you are, still free to express your opinion.
It sure is good to live in such a free and beautiful state as this.

Your comment is sort of, as attributed to Voltaire thing, ‘I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.’ Only without the defense much less death part. In other words “free speech lite.”

Clearly your reality is confused. Schools are dictated to steal children’s innocence by teaching sexual immorality as normal, even taking parents’ rights to know the crap being forced down their throats. Criminals are being put back on the streets to commit more crimes at an unconscionable rate. The demonic Democrat leadership is trying to disarm law abiding citizens so they can control every aspect of their lives. If you believe California is a free state there’s no hope for you. California is run by incompetency, arrogance, and the most ethically corrupt trash this nation has to offer. But go on believing in the false freedom you claim to enjoy.

Schools don’t teach sexual immorality.
They teach facts and respect for our fellow human.
Parents are still free to be access schools’ curriculum, to observe classes, or to opt students out of particular lessons.
And law-abiding citizens are still free to own guns.
If I believed the same falsehoods as you, I’d be pretty upset too.

?. These RWNJ’s go on about schools and have no idea what they are talking about. Just get their “talking points” from Fox and Newsmax.

Exactly! I have 2 kids in public school right now (6th and 8th grades) and I don’t know wtf that guy is talking about. I can be as involved in their curriculum as I want. Also they aren’t being taught anything weird.
As far as the gun thing, I’m a convicted felon so it really doesn’t affect me. But I’ve been thinking about getting them reduced to misdemeanors, as they are from about 30 yrs ago, so I can legally own a weapon again. To protect myself and family from nuts like the ones that always comment on this site

The flower should be replaced with a jackass chasing a pot plant on a stick headed to a dispensary where all the free shit is handed out to the new illegals. Provided by the soon to be non existent working class.

Is this because Oregon just finished it’s very exspensive concrete monolith, and all we have is a billboard?

Interesting thought. I wonder what that sign cost Oregon taxpayers. Also if Oregon plans a similar sign on 199.

At least they could explain why it is outdated. The best I could find is “As a component of Governor Gavin Newsom’s Clean California initiative, this project aligns with the broader mission of creating a welcoming atmosphere and enhancing public spaces throughout the Golden option. Although what clean energy has to do with road signs IDK. Probably money is coming and caltrans is making plans to spend it.

And they intend it be stone or concrete only as those were the only options. Maybe non combustible? Scary thought that. And I think I inadvertently gave my email address to caltrans in taking the survey. Anyway not spending money on a monument was not an option.

How about getting rid of the worthless inspection station and replace it with a welcome sign.

My unoriginal comment:
It should read – “Welcome to California now go home.”

What’s wrong with the traditional way of marking the border?

You build a big liquor store on the California side and a big weed dispensary on the Oregon side.

That sign is perfectly fine! Why are they wasting OUR money on something we never asked for and that we don’t need?!! They are called “taxes” because they are “a strain or heavy demand”. So why are you wasting away OUR money?!!! I’m starting to get pretty angry about these people in these agencies who think nothing about spending OUR money on foolish and expensive so-called “upgrades”! The border didn’t move and the name of our state did not change so how’s about Cal Trans NOT waste our limited resources? Is that too much to ask?!

I agree, the sign is fine. It’s simple and positive– blue sky, bright flowers, spare and straightforward message. Maybe it’s too innocent for these times; i don’t know!
Or maybe just a victim of the old philosophy of “If it ain’t broke, don’t let it be; mess with it, just to see!”

This is a waste of money that would be better used on other road repairs. There is nothing wrong with the existing sign and we don’t need a “monument” that draws the attention of drivers from the roadway.

The sign looks fine to me. Caltrans, spend the money on fixing the highways instead of worrying about a damn sign.
