[Update: Photos] Three Vehicles and a House Damaged in Traffic Collision on Henderson and H Streets

traffic accidentA traffic collision occurred near H and Henderson Streets around 2:10 p.m. on January 19. Scanner traffic indicates this is a three-vehicle collision, with one vehicle striking a house.

After the initial call was put out to emergency responders, the traffic collision was upgraded to a structure fire after it was reported that the vehicle that collided into the house, was possibly on fire. When first responders arrived on scene, they reported that the vehicle was not on fire and resources were reduced.

A white, Jeep Cherokee is reported to have major front-end damage requiring a flat-bed tow truck. An officer at the scene stated that the other two vehicles, a white, Ford Focus and a green, Chevy Tahoe, would also require flat-bed tow trucks.

Traffic control is in place. According to our reporter, Mark McKenna, the two right lanes of H Street are blocked, as well as on lane of Henderson Steet.

Please avoid the area if possible.

Update: H Street has been closed completely as the vehicles are being loaded on tow-trucks.

Good job Eureka! Nice job speeding down H street, weaving in and out of traffic, running red lights, all just to get nowhere in life as you live the same NPC, mundane, monotonous life. To hell with your brothers and sisters and their safety. The world revolves around you and you have to be first. 80% of you drive like you have never been punched in the face. You smile at each other in the grocery store yet when you get behind the wheel all of a sudden you’re a terrible and reckless wannabe nascar driver. For what? To get somewhere 2 minutes faster? You whip around your fellow townsfolk at 20 miles per hour over the speed limit just to get in front of them and slam on your breaks to make a left turn while you blow copious amount of ecig vapor out of your pos vehicle blaring rap music like a wannabe gangster on the way to spend your food stamps at winco. You all drive like you are actually going somewhere when the vast majority of you are going absolutely nowhere in life. Bravo Humboldt. Bravo.

Several accidents in that area since they installed the “pop-outs” and started the construction project on “H” and “I” Streets. Perhaps if the City of Eureka would complete the work in a timely fashion instead of dragging things out forever things would be a bit safer.

lol. Ask anyone who works or lives on H or I street and there are wrecks there all of the time. It has nothing to do with bulb outs and only lousy drivers would blame them.

A huge percentage of the population is driving impaired, while out on the streets you have TWD. That’s my take on it. I will never drive through it again – too dangerous.

We live down the street and ALWAYS slow down and look at cross traffic before crossing that intersection…..dosen’t matter what colour the light is. Gigantic speed bumps half a block from the intersection would help….maybe knock the phones out of these dumbass’s hands.

Most the time it’s pretty easy to navigate, however as the person who commented above your post stated all the construction has mad it, more difficult. The construction has 2 of 3 lanes blocked off, causing sudden necessary lane changes with little signs for notice. However, the construction does not negate the fact people drive far to fast in a hurry to get to the next stop light.

Henderson and H… is long notorious for wrecks.

Accidents are typically caused by somebody running a red light on Henderson…
and not usually caused by cars er… ‘speeding’ down H street.

IMHO 1: Henderson has a long stretch without any stop signs or lights.
IMHO 2: People ‘tune out’ on that street.
IMHO 3: Henderson needs a stop sign a few blocks out from H.

Actually I don’t see speeding on ‘H’ very much, especially with the ‘tank traps’ being constructed on the corners. Odd that the city would ‘initiate’ that project in the wintertime.
Lots of the pavement around the tank traps is turning to potholes… due to water intrusion.
Dunno.

Go figure.

Adding a stop sign a few blocks out from H on Henderson seems reasonable. Fixing the potholes would be an improvement.

There is a stop light one block, in one direction at Henderson & I, and a stop sign one, or two blocks max, before that at J or K. In fact, Henderson is a two way street, one lane each direction, until you get to I where it becomes two lanes, one way.

In the opposite direction from H Street, there is another stop light two blocks at Henderson & F, then yet another stop light one block after that at Henderson & E. After that, however, you are correct; there is quite a stretch with nothing, until you get past St. Bernard, where there is a stop sign. There is neither time nor distance on Henderson to get to any kind of speed between I and H.

So, from K to E on Henderson, the span of 6 blocks, or, 7 intersections, there are 4 stop lights and 1 stop sign.

H Street, however, has quite a long stretch from Buhne to Henderson allowing drivers to push their speedos up near 50+ mph.

Does it need to be pointed out that at the intersection of Henderson & H, there are 3 lanes of traffic on H and 2 lanes on Henderson? And if we go back a block to Henderson & I, there are 3 lanes of traffic on I and 1 lane on Henderson.

miles slattery needs to be adopted by another town. eureka has done its part in his care and maintanace imo. i was done with him when he disgraced the previously gracious city hall foyer with that horrendous, horrendously mismatched, customer disservice counter where a person cannot even pay their water bill without hearing elderly people nearly crap themselves when they get told about the reems of paperwork it is going to take to put a wheelchair ramp on the porch of the house theyve paid taxes on since slattery was still in diapers. red headed black belt could send this photographer in to just sit and listen for victims to interview. It wont take more than a morning. like i said i cannot pay my waterbill and not hear things that make me want to cry. water customers used to go down the hall and just pay our water, and not wait behind the damned planning department victims.
these pop out curbs are the very most passive aggressive a way to comply with law as could possibly ever be developed. many of them are going to cause serious injuries to drivers waiting at stopsigns as cars coming to turn left of fthe street the victim drivers are waiting to cross. as those approaching drivers try to turn, they are going to smash right into the driver doors of the waiting car. how many crashes have to be endured before Eureka goes to the expense of redesigning these tripping hazards. they are as dangerous for the pedestrians as they could possibly be as well. no one keeps track of how many elderly will have broken hips from them. every single one of them has multiple trip hazards for people with low vision, but not so blind they use a tapping cane.
boo. just a big fat boo.

People drive really fast on H street around and heading east from Buhne. Similarly around 14th and heading east. Same thing happens on I, driving west from Harris.

I drove by just as the first 2 officers were arriving lights and sirens. EPD has time to go to accidents halling ass, plenty of time to put out press releases asking for people to drive safely, yet, mysteriously absolutely no time to spend on traffic patrol even after receiving two recent sizable grants to do just that. Time to patrol the road. Otherwise there’s no reason ro have EPD in the first place.

“…Otherwise there’s no reason to have EPD in the first place.”

The person who puts out press releases is not an officer, so not eligible for traffic enforcement.

A sizable mental health impaired population.
A sizable population on illegal substances.
A sizable population with illegal weapons in the illegal substance trade.
A population that indulges in alcohol, can indulge too much, leading to fights.

All of the above seem like dandy reasons to have EPD.

And since we don’t know what caused the crash — pedestrian avoidance? dog in the roadway? — how about you just take all that judgement and turn it toward yourself.

And yet, actively patrolling is what is necessary to reduce everything you listed. Plus, they haven’t responded to anything you listed for years until a major life threatening event or even death occurs. And, yes, these accidents are speed and red light violations almost every time. H street has radar speed signs. Do you realize how often they read between 50 and 70 while people blow by me in the 30 mph speed limit? Do you realize I watched at least 3 other near misses within the next hour after this wreck all by people not obeying stop signs or red lights? Yes, saturating the streets with patrols is exactly what is needed. And yes, I heard an EPD officer say at Renner that officers don’t generally patrol. I stand by my opinion. The current refusal to patrol, but only respond after the fact is lazy ass “policing.” It’s been this way for decades in Eureka.

You heard an EPD officer say that officers don’t generally patrol? That’s interesting. I see them out and about, but maybe they are only going from call to call to call to call. They aren’t refusing to patrol. They are overworked. Big difference.

Your observing 50 to 70 mph on H St speed feed back signs must be a very low occurrence, over the years I have yet to see any speed sign posting over 45 mph while driving on H St.
The 101 Corridor, that’s a different story, the fastest speed sign posting, that I’ve observed, was 83 mph followed within seconds by a 78 mph.
The fastest speed that I personally observed, on a public road, was approximately 140 mph coming off the Northbound Sunset onramp in Arcata.

Instead of spewing out nonsense, how about do some research before jump to conclusions? EPD does do traffic control, I see people get pulled over, ALL THE TIME. Just because they didn’t prevent this particular accident, does not mean the roads aren’t patrolled. It amazes me that you think you know it all. Also, do you really think patrol Officers do the press releases? Because they don’t. If you applied the same amount of effort to actually engaging in the community that you applied to this idiotic response, maybe you could actually do something good. But no, you’ll continue to hide behind your computer and make dumb comments. Real winner!

The statement about seeing EPD pull people over all the time is a total lie, thus nullifying everything you said in your comment. I see CHP pull people over at the south end of Eureka and sometimes in the safety corridor. In town, EPD doesn’t do Traffic patrol, period. That’s a fact.

There is a difference between working a traffic shift specifically to do traffic enforcement, and pulling over someone who is speeding, making illegal movements, etc. Don’t take your word as gospel.

Several times for sure… Was thinking the new huge metal traffic signals post would help but I guess not… I’d place some huge boulders there…

The boulders would be like bullets slamming into the house, or pedestrians. I’ve seen it tried, and that was the ouitcome.

I’m glad no one was hurt. The worst thing is that we never get followups on these crashes to understand the causes and learn from them. Thanks every PD ever.

PS Ms. Music, you don’t need a comma after a single adjective. Otherwise, well done.

We certainly don’t do enough investigative reporting because it is expensive and time consuming and we don’t have enough resources…but…two Rohnert Park Police officers were charged and one has already pled guilty in part because of work we did. A court case is currently moving against the County of Humboldt because of Nikki’s investigations. That’s two that my exhausted brain can pull out at this moment.

People drive too fast in Eureka. Simple as that. Small streets, small blocks, many stop signs, pedestrians and cross walks to pay attention to and navigate slowly.

Don’t understand how these traffic accidents in Eureka end up with so much damage, and hitting houses, fences! It seems we have more than our fair share of such incidents, some times with cars rolling over. People are driving too fast and distracted.

Get off the fricking phones, you are going to kill somebody.
