Wood to Participate in Hearing on Wildfires and Insurance

Press release from the Office of Assemblymember Jim Wood:

Assemblymember Jim Wood (D-Healdsburg), member of the Assembly Insurance Committee, will attend the first of several hearings held across the state to discuss wildfire risk and the increasing number of insurers leaving California and homeowners insurance cancellations and non-renewals.

“People in the five counties I represent have experienced some the worst and deadliest wildfires in California,” said Wood. “We know what a ‘go bag’ is and we know what needs to be done to harden our homes and clear vegetation around our properties, but that has not extinguished the increasing non-renewals of homeowners policies nor the fear that the next time they visit their mailbox that a cancellation notice might be in there.”

Monday, October 9, an Assembly informational hearing on “Wildfire Insurance: Risk, Resiliency and Recovery” will be held in Santa Rosa’s City Council Chambers, 100 Santa Rosa Avenue from 1 pm to 3 pm. The public is invited to attend and the hearing can also be streamed live here. The agenda and background materials can be found at this site.

“I have authored many bills related to wildfires and recovery, including funding for vegetation management and firefighting equipment, establishing a home hardening program, supporting firefighters and more since being elected in 2014,” said Wood. “We need to address the reasons insurers are leaving our state in record numbers so that we can create a healthy, fair and competitive insurance market that protects homeowners and businesses and ensures all Californians can access and retain comprehensive insurance coverage.”

Do the owners who converted their timberlands in the 70’s and 80’s have any responsibility? How about the lobbyists who pushed for more construction in wildfire areas? What about the government officials who routinely approved conversions without providing for adequate fire protection or roads? Insurance companies take risks. Sure things, not so much.

bring back the firebreaks, and logging. that is how access roads and most areas for recreation are created. they will never reduce risk if they rely on homeowners vegetation clearing around structures.
