UPDATE: Correction Made in Sentencing of Jake Combs for Murder of Treavor Earley

Today, 31-year-old Jake Henry Combs was sentenced to 100 years to life in prison for the first-degree murder of 25-year-old Trevor John Earley in Alderpoint, according to a family member’s post on social media and to the Times Standard. Combs’ sentencing came after a Humboldt County jury’s verdict in August found him guilty of shooting Earley on January 6, 2022.

The incident occurred after a social gathering in a friend’s residence took a horrific turn. According to witness testimonies and evidence presented during the trial, the fatal incident transpired after Combs’ dog bit Earley during a gathering at a friend’s house. Earley, visibly upset and in pain, reacted by issuing a threat towards the dog. The situation escalated further as tensions flared.

As Earley spoke to another friend on the front porch, Combs retrieved a loaded 9mm pistol from his backpack. Without warning or provocation, Combs approached Earley from the side and, shot him. Following the gunshot, Combs fled the scene in haste but was eventually apprehended by law enforcement officers on Highway 36.

The sentencing decision handed down today, 100 years to life in prison, reflects the gravity of Combs’ actions and the irreparable loss suffered by Earley’s family and loved ones.

This verdict and sentence are about the best we could see in California today.

You are apparently not familiar with the CA justice system. I have seen systems in 8 states and CA is second toughest and everybody in justice knows that. Not for marijuana but 1000x tougher on drunk drivers, killers etc Turn off the brainswashing Fox News and go down to your courthouse and get some facts, not opinions for other idiots, actually observe and compare. You are wrong

Sentenced to 8 years, out in less than 2. Killed her own child and a second one. Did it through willful reckless actions and tried to cover it up. To my knowledge showed no remorse nor accepted responsibility. She’s a great example of California justice. Light sentences and early releases.

Marci kitchen is a totally different circumstance! The reason Marci is free today is because she wasn’t a suspect until days later. These two cases are completely different! Unfortunately, Marci is free today but you can’t even compare the two cases in the criminal justice system.

Have you heard of Daniella Moore?? Marci Kitchen?? I’ve only lived in Humboldt since moving to CA four years ago and I am appalled at the lack of justice that I’ve observed. It’s not political, these are facts!

So you think either the verdict, the sentence, or both could have been better under the current California legal system? Please explain.

If you choose not to explain, please think about what type of person writes a comment like yours. Calling others idiots is neither nice nor constructive. Fabricating facts and stating them as truth is a tactic of someone who is either dishonest or incapable of making a valid point. For the record, I don’t watch Fox News. I don’t have time for much TV, but when I watch it’s sports or mindless so-called reality shows.

My stance is that once the murder occurred, the only better outcome would have been a death sentence. Greasy Gavin is blocking those in spite of a vote by our citizens supporting capital punishment.

You want to kill people?! That is your solution? Hmmm.
You should probably read more and talk less.

California’s voters weighed in less than a decade ago. The majority wanted to keep capital punishment.

I’ll exercise my freedom of speech as I choose. You don’t have to read anything I contribute.

Fox News is always rated number one. So, your opinion about Fox is wrong.
NEW YORK–(BUSINESS WIRE)–FOX News Channel (FNC) has marked yet another historic milestone, notching its 19th consecutive year as the number one cable news network in total day and primetime, according to Nielsen Media Research (Jan. 2020 – Jan. 2021). Since January 2002, FNC remained the most-watched cable news network across both dayparts with total viewers and in the key 25-54 demographic. Notably, the network continues to post yet another streak as number one in all of television in weekday primetime, topping all broadcast networks in total viewers beginning Memorial Day 2020 to date. Since the November 2020 election, the network is up double-digits across primetime with both younger demos versus the same time period last year. Additionally, FNC continues to rank as the top-rated network in all of cable in primetime with total viewers post-Inauguration to date.

You may be a little too country Joe. Turn off Fox, and learn how to read for yourself. Then you could research things yourself and come to your own conclusions by using your brain.

It’s not news. It’s an opinion platform for psychos and their undereducated rube family and friends. They openly spew racism, homophobia, ignorance, and LIES that are easily debunked. Ask Dominion and smartmatic and their bankers.
Wanna know why amerikkka is shit??try your “ratings facts”. Your ? deity , Fox, oan, newsmaxx, moms for liberty, and similar are all yanking your ignorant leanings to the surface. Let’s all hope you catch a clue before everyone you know abandons you and your ignorant self. But don’t worry….the lefties, their policies, and their humane behavior will ensure you’re well cared for when you become yet another old racist asshole in the care home.
And who tf are they asking to record ratings? A bunch of ancient assholes with landlines and basic cable who answer landline surveys and are stoked to receive $5 in the mail to falsely boost more Murdoch lies.
Have a blessed day!♥️?????????️‍?✊

People might respond more open-mindedly to your views if you didn’t “spew” your hateful opinions towards others.

Because it’s rated number one- that makes it good journalism!? That’s pretty funny. It’s pretty much the opposite. The guy in the mugshot is pretty much your average fox viewer.

??,

…Well, …if he wasn’t a FOX viewer before, he certainly will be one, now…?‍♂️

The HCSO Correctional Facility blares that shit constantly, 24/7/365…

He isn’t going to have a choice…

There is no escaping it…

Oh, well, just part of the punishment, I guess…?‍♂️

It’s torture if you ask me…

Cruel and unusual, as well…

I mean, 100 to life is about the most severe sentence you could hope for in any state that doesn’t have the death penalty.

California does have the death penalty.

I’m aware. The fact remains that 100 to life is right up near the most serious punishment available in the criminal justice system and is totally appropriate for a murder like this

What happened that night was tragic, there’s no doubt about that. A life was ended and it rippled through the community, from his family and friends to the complete strangers reading this article. A lot of people gave expressed anger towards the shooter, for good reason, and plenty of joy at seeing such a harsh sentence. Again, for good reason. People are understandably hurt. What we forget, however, is that people can, and do, change. The hurt and impact of prior poor decision making may never be able to be undone, but changing who we are can prevent us from repeating those mistakes. It can even ripple into helping others avoid such poor decisions, all of which impacts our community going forward. I say this to remind the readers that anger towards the shooter is perfectly acceptable, but giving up on him is not. He has been given a punishment that I cannot even begin to comprehend, but there is hope that, instead of continuing down a path of violence and destruction, he instead changes his ways and sets an example, and in doing so, helps those who ARE returning to society do so better people. The alternative is that those who return after being incarcerated with him are further traumatized and hardened by their interactions with him, which will no doubt lead to their going on to harm their family, friends, and community upon their release. This doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be angry with the shooter or that we should rush to forgive and forget, merely that we should hope and pray that this lost soul finds his way, and EARNS his redemption, as opposed to continuing to negatively and irreparably alter the world in which he lives.

This POS has shown no remorse and if he was free, I strongly believe he would kill again. He is a lost soul and prison is where he belongs. This guy beat up a handicapped man in a wheelchair while in jail. He is beyond saving and deserves everything he received!
