[UPDATE 11:28 a.m.: ‘Two Possibly Involved Located and Detained’] Fatal Shooting in Alderpoint Last Night; Suspects Believed to Have Crashed on Hwy 36

This article was written with the help of Lauren Schmitt of KMUD News.

Last night, a fatal shooting occurred in Alderpoint, a small rural town in Southern Humboldt County. Suspects in the shooting reportedly fled the incident.

According to Samantha Karges, spokesperson for the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department, “The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office is in the Alderpoint area conducting a death investigation after an individual was found deceased outside of a residence with a possible gunshot wound.”

She added, “Numerous individuals are detained at this point and it is an active investigation.”

According to Deputy Travis Rodgers of the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department who is at the Alderpoint homicide scene this is an “active investigation. He explained, “Detectives just got here.” But he also told us, “There is no threat to public safety that we have been made aware of.”

According to traffic on the scanner, a vehicle believed to contain two suspects, a white Ford Explorer, crashed on Hwy 36 about 5:30 this morning.

We believe but have not been able to confirm that a suspect from the crash was arrested soon after the crash but that for several hours after the one suspect was detained, law enforcement was still searching for another suspect described as a white male adult with a dog.

At approximately 9:20 a.m., a man fitting that description was spotted walking at mile marker 23 on Hwy 36. Both CHP officers and HCSO deputies responded to the scene. We have not been able to determine whether someone was detained at that point.

At 9:34 a.m. a reader, Wes Robelen, was traveling the area and took the top photo of Humboldt County Sheriff and CHP vehicles around mile marker 23 on Hwy 36.

This situation is still ongoing and information is being reported as we gather it. However, some of the statements coming from witnesses and initial official reports could be wrong. We will do our best to get the facts but, in the case that something is inaccurate, we will update with correct information as soon as we can.

UPDATE 11:28 a.m.: The HCSO says, “The HCSO is conducting a death investigation on the 100 bl of 6th St in Alderpoint after an adult male victim was located deceased outside a residence with a suspected gunshot wound. Two possibly involved individuals have been located and detained.”

I’m confused. How does an auto accident on 36 connect with a shooting in Alderpoint?

Not if you go out to zenia and connect on van duzen Rd in mad river. Most likely a robbery gone bad and they drove out and back to blocksburg where they always drop their stolen cars.

Sounds like the suspects may have barrelled up Alderpoint Road and continued down 36.

Most likely the suspect left droving out AP rd. Which connects to 36 and then wrecked on 36?

Then what is the name of the road that turns south on 36 at Bridgeville and goes to Alderpoint and beyond?

Check a map. You are correct. Alderpoint ends (or begins) at about Bridgeville and heads over to Alderpoint, then Blocksburg, and finally Garberville… great Sunday drive in the fall.

???

Going up 36 to Bridgeville in the “old days”, you’d turn right on the old bridge, cross it and either head “straight across” to the road that would take you down to Blocksburg, Alderpoint, etc. Or go left and continue up 36, where yeah, you could take Vanduzen, etc down to Zenia, but that seems a bit of a round about way to get to AP.

On the other hand that same intersection in beautiful downtown Bridgeville, if you turn left you head towards Kneeland (possibly my most favorite drive in the world).

The new bridge has altered it somewhat, but the road that you turn right on across from the old bridge will take you to Alderpoint (where this murder happened.) I looked on Google and amazingly, it’s called Alderpoint Road.

Meh, I was thinking they had crashed west of the junction. Was it further up 36?

Makes me sick, fuckin cowards. This is what happens when a [edit]grower brings their drug addict workers here from the city and then at the end of the year dumps them in our little town and they never leave, you know who you are and you are responsible for this! I hope it haunts you for the rest of your life!

Why do they leave the bodies just lying around when they waste someone? They had a car and it looks like 2 guys at least were involved so they didnt lack for manpower or transportation. They could have taken the body somewhere, dragged it a few hundred feet off into the woods and buried it. 2 or 3 hours work with a mattock and shovel, a little care in backfilling and its very unlikely it would ever be found. Perhaps these people don`t plan ahead or think further than their next hit of meth. Probably a good thing……

None of the people who have commented seem to know where Alderpoint is or where Alderpoint road begins or ends. Blocksburg is obviously a town no commentator has been to either.

Someone’s child has been taken from them. A son. A brother. A grandchild. A cousin. A nephew. A friend of so many. You know nothing about AP, clearly. Anything other than condolences, frankly, is despicable and unacceptable. And the fact that you don’t know any better says everything about you, and that you haven’t the heart, love, and integrity of the people that are so profoundly heartbroken. Shame on you, any of you with your callous speculation. It could be logically speculated that you could never know the love and beauty that was lost. So much love. We should all be so lucky to have such an amazing family.
