Public Comment Open for HCSO Grant Funding of New Patrol Boat
Press release from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office:
The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office is seeking public comments on their proposal for the FY23 Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance (JAG) grant program. According to state requirements, public comments can be submitted for 30 consecutive days after posting of this notice.
The Sheriff’s Office is soliciting public input specific to the FY23 application narrative and budget. This grant funding will not be used as program match but will be used in combination with other grant funding sources to supplement the purchase of a new patrol boat. This vessel will be used for law enforcement activities along our waterways including, but not limited to, search and rescue capabilities, routine patrols, disruption of potential threats and illegal activities along our coastline, and will provide operational coordination.
Review the linked application narrative and budget. After review, should you have any grant related questions, please contact Julie Martin, Administrative Analyst II at (707) 268-3662 or [email protected].

Show me the boat.
I realize that it is a separate issue, but our roads are going to hell and our public works director, Tom Mattson, can’t even afford a haircut.
??
Ernie,
At least the HC Sheriff’s have excellent foresight…
Considering that it won’t be long before the County Roads are completely worn out, at least the Sheriff’s can still be getting around on the inland waterways…?♂️?
But, it seems like, “our Coastline” would be The Coast Guard’s turf…?♂️
Like that Ernie …
Getter did, for gosh sake. HCSO does dangerous recovery and rescue on our many lagoons, tidal waters, lakes, and rivers. Give them the best.
Yes by all means, give them the best, for the reasons you have mentioned…
Tell me more about this…
What the HCSO specifically mentioned…
“…disruption of potential threats and illegal activities along our coastline, …”
Like what, exactly, and where exactly???
Seems like a bit of a stretch of the imagination…
(A bit too much of an over-pitch.)
Be specific, please.
I don’t see it.
Didn’t they just recently purchase another boat, to the tune of well over a half a million dollars?
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
the link to the narrative says weed smuggling. it seems like the HCSO and our local envrions are both living in the 70s. in the late 70s I day dreamed of finding a bale of weed on the beach.
Ah yesss…
“The Midnight Sun”…
I seem to recall the story…
A “Moose” boat, for $636,784, to be exact, early this year…
Now they already want another…???

Fine, but just please don’t try and justify it by ridiculously suggesting
a jet sled could appropriately be used to patrol “our coastline”, for, “… threats…”
Please!…
That’s just plain delusional.
I mean like what kind of threats at sea could this boat possibly stop?
All those pesky Antifa buses…???
I’m surprised they are not suggesting that it is, ” perfectly safe and effective, with no risk whatsoever involved”…
a $450,000 boat to patrol the coastline because the HCSO thinks there is illegal weed smuggling going on. do they no understand that you cannot beach a boat on our shoreline to pick the weed up. I would think cameras at trinidad, shelter cove, and the jetties would be more effective and cost effective. More than likely this boat will be used to keep bay boaters away from Crowley’s operations in the bay, which would be the most obvious smuggling operation if occurring at all. we are looking at a 30% budget cut across the board this fiscal year. The boat they have is perfect for the bay and even has room for the dog to ride along.
It’s not that Honsal needs a boat. He “needs” more publicity. I don’t trust him, his motives or his competency.
The HCSO deserves to have the very best equipment they can get their hands on. Their lives and the ones needing help are in the balance. It is easy to make crappy comments about the HCSO as it seems not too many folks like them. A lot of those making the crappy comments will be first in line to dial 911 when they need help! Oh, sorry we would like to come but we don’t have a boat.
They have a boat (more than one ?). They don’t need more. They want more. Big difference.
I realize they have several boats, but none are up to date with the latest technology to track signals and use plotting maps. I am sure there are things you would like more of also Sky Pilot, but money quickly puts a stop to that for most of us. Maybe that new boat may save you one day.
To be clear, I make crappy comments about Honsal because, as you say, I don’t like him. There are many great deputies, but it’s hard for them to do a great job working for Honsal. Yes, as I’ve said before, there were two times I needed the SO and both times I was refused services because of his terrible policies. So, although I may need to call 911 in the future I would likely specify to talk to any agency other than the SO. The SO, because of Honsal is a total waste of tax payer dollars. Money would be better spent housing criminal Honsal in prison.
Yes, Martin, I agree the SO needs the best equipment they can get to serve the public. Unfortunately they are getting short changed having a criminal instead of the best Sheriff they deserve. And yes, until he is out of power I will continue to make crappy comments about him and his crimes.
Your crappy comments about Sheriff Honsal are fine Alf, because you realize the need for up to date (state of the art) equipment for them to use during search and rescue operations.
Investing in America is never a bad idea.
These specialized vessels are needed for all conditions the department might encounter.
Welded aluminum jet boats are the only way to navigate our local rivers and beyond. When you equip one and include a trailer to haul it on, they get pricey. Under extreme use one could hope to get a 20 year life out of one. It will take about a year to fabricate by a reputable mfgr from the Medford Oregon area. Annual maintenance also adds to the price. Wouldn’t want to put our deputies in anything but the best possible boat. Cutting costs and being a cheapskate isn’t a good plan for this expenditure.
You aren’t running the rapids on the Rogue or the Snake Rivers that justify an aluminum jetboat. For shallow lagoon work they might consider an airboat but they would be just as likely to call in a USCG Dolphin for SAR. You could always buy two Merc 250’s and always have one being serviced for backup and install a small 100 hp alongside the main for emergencies. Never had shit fall apart on my BW in a decade of LE work. They also will customize the vessel. I really liked it’s ability to float when waves would fill the hull with up to a foot of water. Also its shallowdraft while still having a pronounced wave cutting hull.
Next time buy an 18′ Boston Whaler Guardian with a T top and enclosure. That with a 250.HP Merc will go about anywhere and turn on a dime.
My favorite “workboat”for LE.
Leave the boat patrol up to the DFG and use county funds to repair our dangerous roads made even more dangerous from deferring maintenance for decades.
