This is a press release from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office. The information has not been proven in a court of law and any individuals described should be presumed innocent until proven guilty:

man with short greying goatee, short hair, faded maroon sweatshirt

Daniel Forrest Rena-Dozier [Booking Photo from the Humboldt County Correctional Facility]

On April 8, 2023, at about 12:58 p.m., Humboldt County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a residence on the 1200 block of Windy Road in McKinleyville for the report of an unwanted subject. The reporting party, 41-year-old Daniel Forrest Rena-Dozier, told emergency communications dispatchers that his former partner was at the residence and refusing to leave. While responding to the residence, Rena-Dozier advised that an altercation occurred inside the residence and one person had been shot. Deputies arrived at the residence and located a 30-year-old female victim with a gunshot wound. She was transported to a local hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries. The Sheriff’s Major Crimes Division responded to investigate. Based upon the totality of evidence collected while on scene and interviews with Rena-Dozier and a female witness, Rena-Dozier was arrested on charges of murder. During a search of the residence, deputies located multiple firearms. One of those firearms was equipped with a homemade silencer, another was found to have its serial number removed.Rena-Dozier was booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility on charges of murder (PC 187(a)), possession of a firearm silencer (PC 33410) and tampering with the ID marks on a firearm (PC 23900).

This case is being forwarded to the Humboldt County District Attorney’s Office for further review and prosecution.

The victim has been identified as Mia Simone Felder. An autopsy is in the process of being scheduled.

Anyone with information about this case or related criminal activity is encouraged to call the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office at (707) 445-7251 or the Sheriff’s Office Crime Tip line at (707) 268-2539.

If she wasn’t wanted at his residence and was told to leave, bad things may happen if she doesn’t. Castle doctrine. Get on down the road iffen you ain’t wanted. Hope he’s an NRA member and has gotten in touch with their lawyers. Free legal representation is available to any NRA member in good standing when they’ve been forced to use a firearm to defend themselves or what is theirs.

As Kym puts in red letters before every criminal press release:

“presumed innocent until proven guilty.”

Iffin the altercation occurred outside, then “castle doctrine” definitely does not apply – I’m not sure California law recognizes “castle doctrine” as opposed to self-defense anyways.

If he thought there was enough danger to need a firearm, he should have stayed inside the house with the door locked. If she started breaking down the door he would have been justified in shooting her, HOWEVER, the illegal silencer and the defaced serial number would still be legal problems. Somehow I don’t think he is a reputable member of society or an NRA member in good standing.

Iffin he’d been a thinkin he woulda gotten rid of the illegally modified firearms before he summoned the law to his house to find the person he seems to have killed with a firearm.

Certainly makes any case for self defense harder when you’re assembling firearms explicitly modified for use in criminal activity.

Castle doctrine does not mean you can murder people who overstay their welcome. Even in Texas or Florida. It means you have no duty to retreat from an attacker while in your home or vehicle.

And NRA membership does not really seem likely given his unsanctioned weapons enhancements; but finding a lawyer fast would be a good idea.

An agent of our government told me in the 1980’s that if they ever need to gather up everybody’s arms that they will begin with the membership of the NRA as it is a good list and the NRA and it’s members are not protected by any kind of lawyer/client or doctor/patient privilege.

The white female principle didn’t run, she went right up to the scum to stop her and got shot. It will be interesting to see what the DA does with this case. If she does end up filing these charges, she will likely need to file by the end of the day tomorrow. Obviously we don’t know the full story, but the way HCSO phrased this press release and the way the incident was called in strongly suggests the possibility of a justifiable homicide defense argument. If it is indeed true that the decedent was in an altercation inside the shooter’s house, it will be very difficult (though not impossible) to prosecute for murder. The weapons charges are a different story, but they have no bearing on whether the homicide is justifiable.

PC 197 (2) says homicide is justifiable when committed by any person “When committed in defense of habitation, property, or person, against one who manifestly intends or endeavors, by violence or surprise, to commit a felony, or against one who manifestly intends and endeavors, in a violent, riotous, or tumultuous manner, to enter the habitation of another for the purpose of offering violence to any person therein.”

PC 198.5 says this “Any person using force intended or likely to cause death or great bodily injury within his or her residence shall be presumed to have held a reasonable fear of imminent peril of death or great bodily injury to self, family, or a member of the household when that force is used against another person, not a member of the family or household, who unlawfully and forcibly enters or has unlawfully and forcibly entered the residence and the person using the force knew or had reason to believe that an unlawful and forcible entry occurred.”

And the onus of the prosecution is “beyond a reasonable doubt.” Sounds like there’s all manner of doubt according to the press release, especially if it his home of record and not hers.

The DA’s office under Maggie Fleming was actually pretty liberal about declining to file charges in the few cases over the last several years where there was a justifiable homicide argument. It will be interesting to see how Stacey Eads handles it. One certainly must know more facts before forming any opinion on whether this particular case was justifiable, but based on the press release, I’m sure the argument will come up.

What gun related felonies? 2nd Amendment makes no distinction between a firearm with a serial number or a firearm with or without a serial number. The press release says deputies located multiple firearms. Doesn’t say if one of the firearms without a serial number or with a silencer was the weapon used to defend himself.

You and 4547 seem to think you have all the facts but nothing in the press release says the victim unlawfully or forcibly entered the home. Without that element the occupant is not entitled to a presumption that they “held a reasonable fear of imminent peril or great bodily injury.” You can’t allow someone into your home and then shoot them because they’re refusing to leave. At this point we don’t know how recently the breakup occurred, if they’d been living together, their history of interactions before and after the breakup, if she still had property in the home, etc.

As I said in my last post “One certainly must know more facts before forming any opinion on whether this particular case was justifiable, but based on the press release, I’m sure the argument will come up.”.

4547 has jumped to a conclusion that I have not at this point. I only point out that the details released here make it very likely that there will be a PC 197 argument in this case, either in court in the future or in the DA’s decision on charges tomorrow. The DA will need to make her charging decision by the end of the day tomorrow so I just intend to make people aware that it is possible that she may decline to file charges based on these details, which has happened after murder arrests in Humboldt County with at least one occurrence in the past year.
You accurately point out facts that the DA would need in order to prosecute the case. As I said, we need more information to form a conclusion.

Hey Todd- I admire your coherent and mature posts. Lost Coast Outhouse’s Angie C won’t allow any of my comments. I was also saying we need more details and innocent until proven guilty. But all the Loco commenters don’t roll that way. I see one says your comment should be deleted, too. Everyone is immediately claiming guilty before ANY real details emerge. It’s a problem, but this is the era we are in, sadly. Burn the house down before it’s built. I heard that the Loco “moderator” only allows one point of view, and if someone comments otherwise they get banned completely. I was banned completely for benign, mature comments. But the mob is in charge, right? Thanks for your posts. At least someone is sane around here!

I agree with you but with the caveat that the DA generally must file charges within two court days, meaning she will need to make her charging decision and have formal charges in by the end of the day tomorrow or the suspect will be released. One shouldn’t be surprised to hear about a decision by the DA, one way or another, tomorrow afternoon.

Unless he shot her at the simultaneous time the first responders got there, there was still time he could have rendered aide to her after he shot her. He could have applied pressure to her stomach to keep her from bleeding out, treated her for shock etc.

Or a warning shot. I was attacked by an intoxicated female who tried to strike me and take my firearm but I dodged until backed into a corner then to take control of the situation. I fired a warning shot and it snapped her out of her episode. Sad to see Ms. Felder died and probably slowly getting no assistance for quite a while. Rip

You fired a warning shot that snapped her out of her episode. And she kept coming at you or she backed off. She died probably slowly after getting no assistance for quite a while. Why didn’t you give her assistance for quite a while after you shot her? Cpr, stop the hemorrhaging, treat for shock, rendering aide asap. You might have saved life.

Why hasn’t Mckinlyville been made a city yet and have their own police department? I know this is off subject but, their population is bigger then fortuna. Having the hcso deal with the ever growing crime and murders in Mckinlyville seems kind of ridiculous at this point. They could have their own police force paid for by their own population and freeing up much needed sherif deputies to other areas of the county. JS

From my understanding, California passed a law a few years ago that makes it increasingly financially unrealistic for areas like McKinleyville to become incorporated. In order to do so, McKinleyville would need to continue to pay for outside services as they do today, to prevent income loss to the county, on top of financing their own police fire etc. Makes it seem like you’re paying twice for a single service that is already present.

Please note that IANAL.

The dead woman has an interesting internet presence: books on Amazon, inactive channel on YouTube, photographic arts at Cal Poly, DUI in Mendocino County, etc.

The dude has an smaller internet presence: talented tattoo artist in Eureka.

Not all creatives make good couples. I’m sorry they couldn’t work things out peacefully, regardless of politics, religion, or whatever. No matter what happened, it’s a double tragedy.

PC 187(a) is what they called “First Degree Murder” on the old Perry Mason TV show. It requires “malice aforethought”. So something he or another witness said must have implied to the police that it was a planned killing. Or there was some other evidence.

And the dude made several poor choices with his firearm collection that will likely cost him all of them, his freedom for up to 6 years, and his right to vote, even if he’s not convicted of murder:

  • Penal Code § 33410 PC makes it illegal for a person, firm, or corporation to have possession of a silencer in the state of California. A conviction is a felony punishable by up to 3 years in jail or prison.
  • Penal Code 23900 PC criminalizes changing or removing a gun’s identifying information without prior written approval from the Department of Justice. Violating PC 23900 is charged as a felony, which carries a county jail sentence of 16 months, two years, or three years.

I tend to feel sorry for folks who do this to themselves, even as they get the wages they earned. 🙁

Malice aforethought is actually different from “planned”. There is no requirement of a plan for murder and you can kill someone out of malice in a spur of the moment decision. If he did it out of malice, it is murder. A planned killing would indicate an element of deliberation or premeditation which isn’t required here.

Malice aforethought is the “premeditation” or “predetermination” required as an element of some crimes in some jurisdictions and a unique element for first-degree or aggravated murder in a few. Insofar as the term is still in use, it has a technical meaning that has changed substantially over time. Wikipedia

Malice aforethought is indeed poorly defined, though, at least in California, it is distinct from premeditation and deliberation. PC 187 says malice aforethought is a required element for all murder. PC 189 is what defines first and second degree murder and premeditation and deliberation are elements that make a murder a first degree murder rather than second. One would need more details to know what the accusation is here.

Well, by the description in the press release, he called 911 before and was presumably on 911 at the time of the shooting, so I’m not sure he was too concerned about people hearing the shot. The press release makes it sound like the silencer and filed serial number were on other firearms located during a further search of the house. A silencer in McKinleyville makes me think deer poacher more than hitman. Perhaps the game warden ought to check the freezer.

So he was informing the 911 operator she was an unwanted subject and as he was talking to 911 he shot her, he had to shoot her. Did he shoot her with 1 hand holding the phone and the other holding the gun. Or was he talking on speaker phone and he had the gun in both hands. She must have been a lot bigger than he was for him to need to shoot her. The silencer could have been for a deer, the serial number, numbers removed were from a different gun or guns. With this knowledge of guns why do you think he didn’t just wound her instead of killing her.

A young woman is dead. She will never be able to do anything again.

If he’d tried to get her to the hospital or performed cpr on her after he shot her he could have saved her life.

It’s legal in California with a dangerous weapons permit. But the removed serial numbers are not legal in any state despite a dangerous weapons permit.

You obviously have no clue how a silencer works. It’s not the same as the movies. It’s not “silent”. It’s still very audible. They are legal in 42 states.

Would you say it’s 3 times louder without a silencer. Would the 911 operator be able to hear the shot when he was talking to her.

Silencers are only allowed in California with a dangerous weapons permit. It takes a lot of paperwork to get that and it’s only for certain reasons.

This lists the reasons.

https://casetext.com/regulation/california-code-of-regulations/title-11-law/division-5-firearms-regulations/chapter-7-dangerous-weapons/article-2-licenses-and-permits/section-4128-general

That girl is dead. What about her?

All that work to get dangerous weapons, a dangerous weapon. Why didn’t he render aide to her after he shot her, it could have saved her life.

A 9mm handgun produces a sound around 165 decibels in intensity. A proper suppressor can decrease that to around 130-135 decibels. A homemade one would probably be far less effective. The decibel scale is a log scale meaning that a 30 decibel reduction is about a 1000x reduction in intensity. That sounds like a lot, but it really isn’t that perceptible a difference to the human ear. 130 decibels is still as loud as a jet engine and about 1 million times the intensity of the vacuum cleaner in your home. Someone on the other end of the phone would absolutely hear a gunshot, even if the firearm had a silencer. My impression from the article is that the silencer was on a different gun found during a later search of the residence though.

How long was it between the shot and the first responders getting to her?
What was the size difference between the shooter and the deceased?

Link to the source of your information. There isn’t a blanket 30 decibel decrease, it depends on the weapon it’s on. Whatever the silencer does it’s still illegal. You don’t seem to have a clue that the silencer is only allowed with a dangerous weapons permit in California, that’s for people that have contracts to sell weapons to the military or to law enforcement. Why would anybody need a silencer in California unless they are part of a Swat team or something. Is that a rough area?

How did he lie to police? You are making assumptions based on missing context. We don’t know these details.

Okay fine. He admitted he shot his ex and called the police to have himself arrested for murder claiming “she wouldn’t leave”. The police found a gun with filed off serial numbers and a homemade silencer because the guy seems to like illegal guns. I’m sure he told the police about his illegally modified guns. Also, it seems that the police think he just murdered his exgirlfriend but he is saying it was “because she wouldn’t leave.” Someone is not quite honest about their actions (which have consequences!)

This adding to the mental health issues…………………

Why the Hell Is It So Hard to Get Adderall Right Now?
The shortage announced in October is still ongoing, and it’s making patients, providers, and psychiatrists’ lives much more difficult.

April 10, 2023, 12:00pm

Matt Ford was diagnosed with ADHD, or attention-deficit/hyperactive disorder, in elementary school. He has been taking Adderall ever since.

“When I’m not medicated, it is life changing,” Ford, a journalist for The New Republic in Washington, D.C., told VICE News. “It has an impact on my quality of life. My family notices it, my wife notices it, my friends notice it. It has a measurable impact on how I’m able to function.”

much more

oh no. prescription amphetamines is hard to get.

Honestly, I’ve always thought amphetamines for ADHD is bullshit. “my kid fidgets give him drugs instead of exercise” seems like it’s a big pharma cash cow. Fidgety kids annoying adults and not sitting still. The answer for “kids should be seen and not heard.”

Emotional relationship conflicts can be so volatile. Fists thru walls, slamming doors, pushes, slaps hits and thrown objects are bad enough. When a firearm enters the situation the whole dynamic changes. The best action to take is to leave the area, call law enforcement and avoid escalating the conflict.

Still, we don’t have details of the altercation. Did this woman have a weapon? Even a pipe or a bat? How did she attack him, if she did? He called in 911 as a person trying to gain access to his home at 1AM. Was she drunk, was she crazy? Nobody knows yet.
Right now, he gets the benefit of doubt. I don’t give a rat’s behind if he had a silencer. They are legal in 42 states. I am guessing, but a lot of questionable people roll through tattoo shops. It’s possible he accepted guns as trade. Personally, I’m not into unregistered guns. But the world is getting more dangerous by the day and it’s good to have protection.
People have some idea that silencers “silent”. It’s not like Hollywood. In real life, they only cut noise down several decibals.

Frankly there are just as many fantasies being created about how he could be innocent as how he could be guilty. But one thing is sure, you may dismissed location because other States have different rules but the courts are not so flippant.

Oh, and the innocent until proven guilty is a rule for the press and the judicial system. People are free (obviously) to have whatever opinion they choose.

It’s nice that so many people are judging him and telling everyone else how it is before we know all the facts. It is very common for initial press releases to be void of details or false details, and then they come out later after changing the details. We really know nothing. Making him guilty immediately is not how the justice system works. He has a whole trial ahead, unless the charge ends up getting tossed out after a thorough investigation. Maybe she was attacking him. Maybe he feared for his life. Maybe she didn’t attack him. We don’t know. It’s just sad that so many people want to become judge and jury, saying terrible things about him when WE HAVE NO IDEA WHAT REALLY WENT ON YET. I’m sure he’s suffering terribly having killed someone. If he is found guilty after a trial, so be it. But in America we are supposed to be INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY. Unless there are details strongly showing otherwise, which there are not!
Kudos to Kim for allowing these kinds of comments. Loco would not allow this. I guarantee it. ? I’ve tried. DELETE! Over there it’s mostly just a mesh of group think. Kim allows some freedom here for others’ opinions which should be appreciated

Okay what is known in one corner you have an armed man who shoots an unarmed woman. The castle defense not stand your ground is clear, warning shot, then use the weapon as a cudgel but only as a last resort do you turn that weapon and pull the trigger because most of the time you look like this fellow a bomb just got dropped on you. My friend “Ricky” was at an ice cream shop in Sac shot a guy over Ice cream and is doing life over a damn Ice cream he regrets that everyday as he wakes up on groundhogs day in the pen.

So if he never called the cops in the first place, would it have turned into a dumped body?? Or a missing person’s case? He has a similar facial expression to the guy that killed the father & son in Willits. The “oh shit Im fd’ now how the hell am I gunna get out of this look.” To be so agressive over one’s space, so impulsive, so entitled to feel shooting her was your ONLY option. Lie it all away…after the fact defense. Brilliant decision. NOT. Split second agressive decision 40 years to life to think about it.
