A Waterspout Whirled Up Shelter Cove This Afternoon (Video)

Video taken at Shelter Cove this morning by Micah Crumbaugh

Today, a lucky local, Micah Crumbaugh, captured this video of a water spout climbing up the side of Shelter Cove in Southern Humboldt County.

“I saw it start forming around 12:22,” he told us. “So glad I took a little walk while I was at work. Perfect timing!”

According to Matthew Kidwell, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Eureka, waterspouts are “sort of like a tornado” over the water. Once they move onto the land, they are a tornado, he explained.

While the weather phenomena is relatively uncommon, he explained that “anytime we get these cold systems they are probably out there.” He said that these happen along our area a “couple of times a winter.

“We had one a little smaller than this come right into Woodley Island [in Eureka] a couple years ago,” he told us.

Congratulations, Micah! What a wonderful sight and thanks for sharing it with us all!

Well the wind is blowin’ harder now
Fifty knots or there abouts
There’s white caps on the ocean
And I’m watchin’ for water spouts

I’ve witnessed the aftermath several “sort of like a tornados” before. Back in the early 1960’s I was in Eel Rock when a “sort of like a tornado.” came down the open ridgetop until it hit a madrone tree. It twisted the madrone off at the roots and threw in down into the creek below.

A few years ago, one came right trough Garberville. It tore up tree limbs and broke signs and glass. It tore the sign off the front of our store, blew it over our roof. Part of the sign went trough the window of the flower shop behind us, and the rest it landed in Jacob Garber Square.

Not so long ago one blew into the little valley that the Piercy Patriot Station is located. You can still see the path of trees that it ripped out just south of the field next to the patriot.

Woah.
Was wondering if that path near Patriot was a small tornado or a wind shear..
That must have been pretty exciting to witness the other 2.

Okay, first earthquakes, then fierce wind storms last month, followed by huge pounding surf storms… then, a water spout tornado. Next will likely be a meteor…

I seen 13 big horn rams and numerous frozen water falls yesterday while on a quad ride. Today 7 tom turkey’s and 3 beef cows wintering a snow storm together in a rocky canyon. Your water spout is way cooler!

Very cool. Are you in California? Not a lot of Bighorn or frozen waterfalls around here…

Good job Micah! Saw one of those about 10 yrs ago in just about the same spot. But it started out further over the ocean, dissipated at the hillside. It’s a rarity! Very cool…
