Night Light of the North Coast: Snow at the Carson Mansion
Snow sticking on the ground is rare in coastal Humboldt County, so when it does, I am drawn to photograph something. The Carson Mansion is periodically that something.
Once the sun came up there were lots of people out photographing. I stopped at one of the turnouts on the Samoa Peninsula to catch some snowy dunes and surf in the early sun, and spotted a mom, dad, and infant out doing the same. They were having fun taking turns photographing each other with their phones, so I offered to take a photograph of all of them with their phone.
“You look like you might be expensive…” they said. I had a camera and tripod and pack.
“Hell, no!” I cried, and we laughed. After I took photos of them with their phone, they took some of me with my phone. It was a good morning.

Beautiful! It didn’t snow much in Arcata or Eureka between 1960 and 1990… but I am grateful for the photo!
Fantastic, hat tip to the photographer!
Looks like something out of a fairy tale. Great photo as usual, David.
Looks like a set or location for a Tim Burton film.
[…] friends at the North Coast Journal and Redheaded Blackbelt ran the photo, though I didn’t really have a story for it at the time other than a short version […]
