Reports of damage from today’s quake is just beginning to come in. But we spoke to one victim, Monica Welch, who told us that she, her husband, and her son were sitting on their bed when big shake struck her town of Rio Dell.

“[E]verything started shaking,” she told us. “[E]verything in my closet fell. I was trying to get up but couldn’t until it was over…[W]e just all grabbed each other at first and I was hyperventilating.”

Her post and pier rental appears to be off its foundation.

Today’s quake seriously impacted the home she is renting. “[T]his one did way more damage than that [last] one,” she said.

“The house I am renting completely shifted,” she explained in a GoFundMe. “I have broken foundations and cracks in my walls. My sewer is no longer connected.”

A pipe is disconnected.

If you would like to help, you can donate at her GoFundMe. “I’m just trying to raise money to get into another place,” she explained. “Anything helps!”

UPDATE Monday Evening: Monica Welch tells us, she is going to “delete the GoFundMe because I think my landlord is going to fix the issues and we’re going to be able to stay here.” She has requested that the money donated be returned to the people who sent it.

A direct link to her GoFundMe page would make it easier to help out.

Friends of ours had major damage in the first quake and now this second one really did more damage. Basicly her and her husbands house is in such a bad shape that its not safe to stay in it. Their fell off and half is in their living room. They have no water, they just had their papes fixed and now they all need fixed. We are affraid that its going to cost more to fix it then its worth. Lots of prayers to everyone in our little town.

Here in Eureka too, cost to fix is as much as the house is worth. Every wall in the house is damaged, everything in the house is broken. Just trying hold it all together for the kids sake.

It might not be as bad as it looks. Hopefully not. I saw homes in Santa Cruz after the Loma Prieta that looked really scary, but the framing resettled in a way that didn’t cause a lot of structural damage and just needed mostly drywall and some plumbing repair.

If the house is going to be jacked and lifted back into place they really should let renters live onsite till it can be done. In a tent. There aren’t many options in this area.. It is an emergency and it might be better than other options for some people…
Does anyone in the area even jack and reset houses back on the piers??

Sooo…maybe it’s too soon, but,
Did any of the structures that Warren Black Red Tagged come down? The ones Code Enforcement was busy busting instead of inspecting anything else in Humboldt? What was the reason ostensibly to red tag those structures? Public safety, or an alternative way to harass and extort from weed growers, once weed was legalized? One might think (building) code enforcement might have played a role in identifying construction deficiencies that home owners could address prior to a quake. But I guess that would be helpful to citizens. If your job is to fight the insurgency, then I guess it’s gonna come at the cost of a few innocents.

Maybe there should be a Go Fund Me account to put cement perimeter foundations on all these post and peer block houses?

I’m imagining an alternate universe where a pudgy guy dressed like a cop pulls up and says
“Our investigation shows you have a shitty foundation. Here’s a voucher, and list of contractors. If you dont COMPLY WITHIN 90 DAYS, we will return with an extension!”
But seriously though, I did hear something on the radio a few months ago about Cal OES or FEMA grant money out there for foundation shear wall retrofits. It was a lottery if they got too many applicants.

Just found a supposedly to-code, including seismicly, and supposedly cheaper perimeter foundation kit made of galvanized metal and set in cement w/rebar. https://www.anchorpanel.com/ Bank loan inspection and USDA approved.
The distributor is in Fort Bragg. Panels come delivered nested on 2 pallets.
IDK, maybe it’s an option for some people.

I don’t know where you got your info from but the US dept of agriculture has nothing to do with anything used in home building.

USDA Home Improvement loans help low-income Americans repair or enhance their homes.

Does renters insurance cover this type of damage? From “Acts of God” or Natural Disasters?
