Fatal Traffic Collision East of Clearlake Oaks

Fatality feature

Scanner traffic and the California Highway Patrol Traffic Incident Information page indicate a fatal traffic collision occurred near the the intersection of State Route 20 and State Route 53 on the east side of Clear Lake.

Approximately four miles east of Clearlake Oaks, a vehicle reportedly veered off the roadway and first responders reported to dispatch that a fatality had resulted from the accident.

There are no reports of road or lane closures but commuters should assumed emergency vehicles will be in the area.

Between Mendocino and Lake County, this is the third fatality reported on our rural roadways in the last 12 hours. The first occurred in Leggett, the second near Boonville, and now this evenings in Lake County.

Please remember that this story is unfolding. Information is being reported as we gather it. However, some of the information coming from witnesses and initial official reports could be wrong. We will do our best to get the facts but, in the case that something is inaccurate, we will update with correct information as soon as we can.

One of the worst, most dangerous intersections in CA

If you are on 53 coming from city of Clearlake you will be confused, and possibly misled, by the sign illustrating the approaches to the fairly new roundabout at the junction of 20 & 53. Several times I have come from Clearlake intending to head west on 20 to my home but have ended up going east up the hill to Williams and then having to figure out how to turn around and get back where there are no crossings. Also, entering 20 west from the roundabout, once you have gotten into the roundabout correctly, you have to watch out for cars coming off the hill behind you. And then there’s the road to the Moose Club on the right not much farther along. I am more than fine with roundabouts in general: locally, the one at the Nice-Lucerne cutoff farther west is a good working replacement for the annoying traffic light at that intersection (which I believe replaced four-way stopsigns!) — but the 20-53 roundabout seems poorly designed and dangerous.

This is an awesome roundabout. It is slightly larger than the others, and the curbs are round so you can take the turns fast lol

maybe you should open your eyes and actually look at the big signs before the roundabout . the signs are big and clear and reflective at night . my first time thru when construction was not finished was an easy which way to go .
sorry , my bad , but i dont care for drivers that have no clue how to drive or follow simple road signs

They surely do not deserve the death penalty. I think that is a terrible place for a roundabout. There should be a real signal (stoplight) there. The family of the person who died, if it was at this intersection, should sue the cones off CALTRANS
