Emergency dispatchers received a 9-1-1 call reporting remains had been found near Rohner Park in Fortuna around 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 29.

Today we were able to confirm with Sergeant Mowry of the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office that emergency dispatchers received a report of remains found near a trail is the area of Rohner Park. Sergeant Mowry said he believes a female juvenile hiker located the remains.

Emergency personnel requested the Fortuna Police Department respond to the area northeast of the rodeo grounds, behind the pistol range where skeletal remains were found. Once at scene, it was determined that the location of the remains is technically outside the FPD’s jurisdiction. Due to FPD already on site, Sergeant Mowry said they proceeded with processing the scene. The Humboldt County Coroner’s Office responded to remove the remains.

Sergeant Mowry was unable to confirm the state of decomposition of the remains.

We have requested additional information from the Fortuna Police Department; however, we will likely not receive any information until after the weekend.

Please remember that information gathered from initial reports is subject to revision as more facts become available.

This person has missing from Fortuna, for about 4 weeks…

But, to be clear, it’s nothing more than a coincidence at this point.

The first result, after googling “missing persons from Fortuna”.

I’m sure that there are many more…

Would there be skeletal remains after 3 months? Should have an answer to the identity within a few days. My condolences to the family

According to LoCo..

“Due to the advance stages of decay, identification of the decedent was not immediately possible and is pending DNA comparison and analysis,” Karges said. “Foul play is not suspected at this time, however, an external exam to confirm manner of death is scheduled for tomorrow, November 1.”

Just very sad. My heart goes out to the female juvenile hiker that came upon such a sad and upsetting site. I pray the Coroner’s Office can identify the person. A family somewhere has been missing a loved one and hopefully this will bring closure for them. May the person RIP.

Then call me irresponsible as well…

I thought of the same thing when it was said that the remains were found “behind the pistol range”…

They shoot straight into the bank behind the targets at rodeo grounds

Ideally, they shoot straight
into the bank…

Once many years ago, when I was much younger, I had an errant round discharge downrange at a shooting range in Redway while my barrel was a little too elevated…

I’m not saying that’s what happened to this person, just that errant elevated rounds do accidentally happen occasionally at shooting ranges…

What makes this an irresponsible comment? I thought the same thing, as did a “Guest”

While your comment wasn’t “irresponsible”, all public speculation about the cause of any death is unnecessary, unneeded and disrespectful of the deceased and their loved ones. Not all thoughts need to be shared publicly.

Not irresponsible comment at all. The remains were found not far from there. No clue can be left unturned until they find out exactly what happened and why.
