Vote Today: Humboldt County’s Rosie Barks Gets Second Chance at National Pet Competition

Rosie Barks
Rosie the rescue dog didn’t finish in the top three for California in the Pet Lovers Choice Awards, but her run isn’t over yet.
The Belgian Malinois mix, adopted by Kate Macnab after a close call with euthanasia as a sick, underweight puppy, finished eighth out of thousands of entries statewide and landed among the top 300 vote-getters nationwide. Contest organizers have now opened wild card slots for dogs who didn’t make the original cutoff, and Rosie has been offered one of those spots. Voting ends at 7 p.m. today, July 2. If she finishes first in the wild card voting, she moves on to the Best in Nation competition.
“Not bad for a lil country dog from Humboldt County,” Macnab said.
Rosie was the runt of her litter, born with a significant overbite and slated to be euthanized before eight weeks old due to illness. Macnab agreed to foster the entire litter so Woof Project Malinois Rescue could pull them, and Rosie won her over completely. She has since become a fixture in Macnab’s household and, as previously reported, has pledged to split any prize money among Woof Project Malinois Rescue, Redwood Pals Rescue, Humboldt County Animal Shelter, CARDA Search and Rescue, and Critters Without Litters if she wins.
Readers who want to help send Rosie to the national stage can vote at the link below. Macnab said Rosie wanted to thank everyone who has supported her so far.
