Press release from the Cal Fire Humboldt – Del Norte Unit:

Tomorrow morning at 6:00 AM, the CAL FIRE Humboldt – Del Norte Unit will lift the burn suspension.  This affects those in State Responsibility Areas (SRA) within Humboldt, Del Norte, and Western Trinity Counties.

Landowners in the SRA will again be permitted to burn vegetative debris on permissive burn days and with proper permits.  The North Coast Unified Air Quality Management District (Air Quality) requires permits year-round.  Those with a Non-Standard Air Quality permit will also be required to obtain a CAL FIRE LE-5 burn permit.  LE-5 permits may be obtained by contacting your local CAL FIRE facility.  LE-5s may also be obtained from the United States Forest Service for those areas protected directly by the Forest Service.

Landowners must also ensure proper notifications are made prior to burning to avoid unnecessary response by firefighters.

CAL FIRE would like to remind the public that hazardous fire conditions still exist.  Compliance with burn permit terms is critical.  The Humboldt – Del Norte Unit frequently sees escaped control burns resulting from:

  • Not remaining in attendance of the fire
  • Not maintaining clearance around the pile
  • Burning when windy or when winds are forecasted

These are all violations of the terms of the burn permits and could result in civil and/or criminal penalties.

CAL FIRE Unit Chief Kurt McCray urges the public, that while controlled use of fire is a key tool for reducing wildland fuels, it must be done safely and in compliance with permits.

I work with fire/prescriptions and fuels reduction, and I will say this is still way too early to be doing this.

Cal Fire is burning beach grass below Table Bluff, within wetlands and their buffers,
without a Wetland Permit.

Again, Humboldt’s coastal wetlands and wildlife set-asides are being torched
and destroyed-
before even being recognized

Oh crap. Are you going to let us know when it’s safe, I’ll be waiting. Also, any stock tips you have would be appreciated.

No. I don’t get paid big bucks to make those decisions.

I do know that even when it’s amply moist to burn, or downright safe, some idiot will still burn their house down with fire.

Lifting the burn ban for the general public is asking for disaster until we see substantial rH recoveries every morning, consistent heavy drippy fog, or best yet, multiple days of slow, wetting rains.

It’s not complicated.

Not along the coastal area of Humboldt considered the tip of the southern portion of the PacNW. Fog and fog drip 5 out of 7 nights a week since beginning of October. Rain a few days ago. I think CALFIRE knows exactly what they are doing. Doesn’t seem to be a better wildland firefighting agency that I can think of. Notice how they say at the end of the press release that essentially, don’t be a moron and take personal responsibility for your actions.

Great. Lift the burn ban for that zone in particular. Leave it intact for the other zones where fuel moisture levels are still low, snags are still bone dry, etc…

Personal responsibility……are you joking, now??

I agree-it’s dumb. Forests are still just as dry as they were a month ago.

Several “controlled” burns have gotten out of control in recent years, some with catastrophic consequences. Were “civil/criminal” penalties imposed?? What’s good for the goose is good for the gander….

They must be using some computer modeling to know where to do these controlled burns. Would be nice if they explained who produced the computer models, overview of how the model works, and what are the results of the computer models besides the burns that they announce.

CAL FIRE is just trying to reduce the wildland fuels, private land owners should be able to burn. It’s clearly says hazardous fire conditions still exist, there is a time to burn and it is so beneficial when it is done right. It is a lot of work to prepare for a good burn. You can’t just take a lighter and start burning. Everyone needs to get on it in order to make your community safe. Watch videos, read books there’s a lot of new information on fuels reduction. Teach your kids right now about it the next generation is going to make a difference.
