[UPDATE 12:54 p.m.: Six Rivers NF Lists More Fires] Lightning Storm Peppers Northern Humboldt, Multiple Fires Reported
Throughout the early morning hours today (August 5), lightning flashed in northern Humboldt–particularly near Willow Creek and Hoopa.
Basho Watson Parks, a member of the Willow Creek Fire Safe Council, has been up since early this morning reporting on the resulting fires on the Willow Creek, CA Bulletin Board on Facebook.
We spoke to him a little after 5 a.m. He explained that there are multiple fires in his area almost assuredly caused by lightning. He told us that strikes “pummeled” the area around Three Creeks and Brannan Mountain which is west of Willow Creek. But also hit all around northeastern Humboldt County starting roughly about 2:30 a.m.
He knows of one fire south of Willow Creek, which we believe is the one that shows on FireMappers as the Charlie Fire.

Fires shown on FireMappers at 6:30 a.m.
He gave his observations which haven’t been confirmed officially. “There are three fires on Campbell Ridge,” he told us. “Three [that] are growing…One up Peach Tree, one in the Hudson Creek drainage, and one further up river on Campbell Ridge directly east of Willow Creek.”

“The lightning is still rocking all around us,” he told us as he and a companion prepared to go check on some of the fires about 5:15 this morning.
Rob Mayeda, a meteorologist for NBC, created these snip of radar showing storms moving from south to north through Humboldt County around 4 a.m.

About 6:50 a.m., a report came in over the scanner that a new fire was now burning “at the end of High Prairie Road” off of Snow Camp Road. The fire is estimated to be already one acre in size and growing in heavy timber.
Four other fires started this morning relatively close to Willow Creek, because they happened overnight and in relative rugged areas, not much information is known other than their rough locations.

I got up at 2:45 and saw the lightning show. Got up again around 4 and it was still going on.
It woke me up at just after 3:00 this morning. Quite a show. Now there is a smoke plume that looks awful close to Salyer.
Thank you.
Please keep us informed.
Willow Creek
Dang, dang, dang…
It was flashing bright enough to wake me up over here on Fruitland at 2 am
Looks like the Friday Fire, The Charlie Fire, and The Prairie Fire, are all in Humboldt.
A Humboldt Lightning Complex, every 7 years, right on schedule, 2008, 2015,
2022.
Very predictable.
??(Way back in the spring of 2020)…?
Que up the twilight zone music..?
Doo-doo, doo doo, doo doo, doo doo…
Doo doo doo…
(Child’s play.)
We could see flashes in the north sky last evening before dark all the way from Windy Gap. I was thinking oh shit, that’s not gonna be good:(
Smokejumpers are in orbit looking for jump site. Lots of resource orders going out to get as many resources as possible down here.
They have added another fire on Bremer Ridge, pretty close to the north end of Willow Creek, right above the golf course neighborhood.
more new starts on the updated map
It’s been busy at the Rohnerville Airport (KFOT) today. The S-2 Tracker is joined by a C-130 Hercules and they’ve been moving in and out all day, headed northeast.
CalFire is hitting these fires hard from the air. In addition to 2 S-2s flying out of Rohnerville, there are two (now 3) jets flying out of Redding. Flightradar24 shows the C-130 on its way back after refueling in Redding.
Only one of the fires is a CalFire incident. All other are USFS. As for aircraft, those resources are always shared on incidents (whatever is closest/available).
