On this day, July 2, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was adopted by the Second Continental Congress with twelve colonies voting in favor and New York abstaining due to their legislature having been evacuated to avoid the British invasion of New York City.
They continued to tweak the wording for a couple more days before finally approving the final text on July 4th.
New York didn’t actually ratify the Declaration until the following week, although on July 19th the Congress voted to allow the word ‘unanimous’ to be used when referring to its passing.
The actual signing of the Declaration wasn’t completed until August 2.
