Public Health Responding to COVID-19 Outbreak at Fortuna Long-Term Care Facility

public information

Press release from Humboldt County Public Health:

The Humboldt County Public Health Branch is assisting staff and management at Fortuna Rehabilitation & Wellness Center in response to a COVID-19 outbreak.

Public Health visited the long-term care facility Wednesday following concerns about possible infections. To date

, 12 people have tested positive for the virus, which includes both residents and staff.

“We’re always concerned when our seniors and medically vulnerable members of the community are at risk,” said Humboldt County Public Health Director Sofia Pereira. As of now, no residents have been hospitalized.

Pereira said staff were in consultation with the California Department of Public Health’s Healthcare-Associated Infections Program and are working with the facility to provide infection prevention education and guidance, as well as assisting with acquiring any state resources that may be available.

Public Health’s Outbreak Response Team has visited Fortuna Rehabilitation & Wellness Center twice so far to provide testing and offer infection prevention recommendations, and will continue to work with facility management to test residents every two to three days.

According to the facility management, Fortuna Rehab has stepped up screening of all employees for COVID-19 symptoms, adding that visits are currently restricted to slow the spread of illness.

Public Health staff will provide support as needed through the weekend. Additional information will be available next week.

If one is in a place like that, they got a foot in the grave anyway. At least that’s what Mario Cuomo seemed to imply last year as he was killing off (or producing?) more Democrat voters.

Andrew Cuomo. His father, Mario, has been “in the grave” for years.

Sharp eye, Good catch !

Something about the name in that comment seemed odd when I read it, but I just let it slide… I wouldn’t have made the Father, Son, “correlation”…

Thank you for the correction. Guess it’s easier to just say, “Cuomo”. Universal term for dirtbags.

Thanks, Angela!

Mario Cuomo might have said that if he hadn’t been otherwise preoccupied with being dead himself since 2015

All residents are vaccinated right? So we’re good, right? Or they’re vaxxed and still getting sick? Hmmm, you’ve been had by big corp again, who would’ve guessed.

When you get old or have an illness your immune system doesn’t respond very well. I’m glad you survived with no more than a simple cold. I have friends that have died and some are still sick and not that old. I prefer to take care and love those who cannot survive without our help and the “big corp” has helped a lot of us survive longer during this second pandemic in my lifetime! The first one not many survived!

Water dissolving and water removing
There is water at the bottom of the ocean
Under the water, carry the water
Remove the water from the bottom of the ocean

Water dissolving and water removing
Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again, into the silent water
Under the rocks and stones, there is water underground

Same as it ever was…

They say they’re concerned.
Are they concerned enough to make sure all employees are vaccinated and boosted ?

Quite right. Of all places that need extra caution, facilities like these are at the top of the list. Even Sweden, with its lackadaisacal attitude towards Covid, acknowledged in retrospect that they should have been much more cautious with this type of setting, with its increased vulnerability.

The vaccination has been debated fully at this point. No vaccine, even the best, is 100% effective. Somebody has to be one of those on whom it’s less effective. Even so, that none of the residents have died or even been hospitalized argues for the efficacy of the vaccine. Without the vaccine, the results would almost certainly have been far, far worse.

Or Omicron is almost certainly, far far milder…

And the vaccines are almost certainly, far, far, inferior to any other vaccine ever authorized and approved…

Maybe that’s it.

Yeah, I think so…

Now, get ready for your monkey pox vaccine, because nobody is buying into the COVID vaccines anymore…

Just wait til you see everyone lining up, pushing and shoving, for the monkey pox jab…etc., etc., etc…

It’s gonna be great….

Amazingly, the monkey pox jab, was all ready to go… Boy are we lucky… Those scientists are soooo smart and trustworthy, they probably already have had their monkey pox vaccine, just in case
There was an outbreak… They had no way of knowing, did they? No sirree Bob.

The vaccines met the needs of the Alpha variant pretty well. Vaccination increased survival after infection by a factor of 10. It met the needs of the Delta variant even if not as well. It was eventually down to a factor of 5. It still improves the survival rate of Omicron but that only means that the illness is only less deadly in a group very susceptible to hospitalization over every illness. It does not mean the vaccines are anywhere near useless. Hundreds of thousands survived contact due to vaccination where the ones who were not vaccinated died. The ledger of the damage done by vaccination versus the damage avoided by it is so overwhelming positive for vaccination that the pettifogging petulance of anti vaxxers must be clearly insane.

The most ridiculous stance a person could have would be to say what you are saying- that no one should have been vaccinated because a vaccination is not good enough if it doesn’t keep people from getting infected. Only if there were a vaccine that did prevent all infection instead of less death or serious illness would that be even rational and then only to say that one is better than the others. Being so blinded by hatred of various tangents such as profitability or lack of history of a new process or anti government beliefs to say something that saves lives should be rejected is incredibly self destructive to everyone. Touting increased death because it is “natural” is so irrational that it takes the breath away. Yet, if the criticisms are eliminated from anti vaxxer arguments, that is what they are saying- ineffective snake oil treatments are what they offer as a replacement for something that works but just not perfectly.

It is so pathetic that doctor’s recommendations to get vaccination are so easily negated by some internet garbage from people who know squat but don’t hesitate to pontificate over ridiculous rumors, innuendos one suspicions- “…both of whom have pleaded with their kidney patients to get vaccinated. Cleveland is all too familiar with kidney patients who get COVID and don’t make it. He’s heard all the excuses, and he’s ready to counter them.” https://www.ajc.com/news/coronavirus/more-of-the-vaccinated-and-boosted-landing-in-hospital-with-covid-19/Q5ZSDKXQA5E4HMO7ZHTJYDJ4QM/

Supposedly nasal vaccines are moving forward that are less distressing to medical luddites. Most of their fear are visceral about injecting something rather than squirting something up their noses. So maybe then the anti vaxxer ranks will thin back to their normal fringe status then. Nasal vaccine sprays have had a checkered history of failing to live up to their promise before but this might be different. At which point there will finally be a real choice. Not just the anti vaxxer spitfest of theoretical zombie apocalypse that never happens however often they repeat it.

Without the vaccine the results would have…. , that is as far as science will let us say. To say more is to assume or lie, but that occurs more regularly all the time. 10 dollar fuel right around the corner, big corp making billions more, you’ve been had! And thats the truth, feel the bern.

Yes!! And if they’re not then fire them and let the residents prepare their own meals and do their own laundry. I’m not saying that vulnerable people shouldn’t vaccinate and boost if they choose, to protect themselves, but it doesn’t seem that vaccination prevents the spread of the virus so why and how would you “make sure” all employees have been quadruple jabbed? I bet given the choice between dinner and a clean bed or a vaccinated staff most would choose to eat.

They actually have to be vaccinated AND boosted to work there… all the facilities do this, as of months ago.

Yes, vaccinate all employees to guarantee that they can’t spread Covid.

“How about making sure that you’re vaccinated, so you do not spread the disease to anyone else.”

At least J&J, Pfizer, and Moderna are turning a hefty profit. Keep getting those boosters, fools!

This has been an ongoing issue for as far as I can remember. The number one prevention of the spread of disease is HAND WASHING, PROPER hand washing.. its so simple and yet so AFFECTIVE. the reality is most people have no idea what that means. #1 wet hands, #2 add soap #3 agitate for 25 sec. #4 rinse and #5 dry completely. It’s sad how many people put SOAP first then water… THATS SO WRONG!! One last thing surgical gloves if not used properly can result in cross contamination.

That is all…

The issue in a long term care or rehab facility is not hand washing. Most residents are already immunocompromised. Have you ever worked in one? I did for 6 years. Every year residents get flu shots. Yet every year there is still a mass flu outbreak like the story of barf bag from stand by me.
Those kinds of facilities do not have proper set ups for isolation. In bigger hospitals rooms are vented out individually. Not in nursing and rehab homes. All the airflow is connected and shared throughout. So any cough, sneeze or infected fluid from one room goes to every room. Most residents get showered twice a week unless they can do it themselves without help. Any contagious illness will spread like wild fire in a facility not made to support proper isolation rooms, regardless of vaccination status. This is why so many people were outraged when certain states started making the call to place young people with covid into nursing homes, because it meant a death sentence for the elderly and a prime breeding ground to increase covid infections.

This seems to be the key problem — the companies running these facilities are minimizing costs so they do not want to install the kind of ventilation systems that would significantly reduce the spread of viruses. Especially with COVID where adequate ventilation dramatically reduces the rate spread indoors and why outdoor spread is so minimal.

When you live with a system that values profit margin over health care, you’re going to have these kinds of problems over and over.

Can you find any country where nursing home care is mostly government run? Even technically not-for-profit care is based on limiting expenses to governments in the US and frequently outsource it’s actual care. But even so they generally tend to be better. Usually though they are run by religious organizations as a mission so not useful for many, which says something. And there are plenty of cases where non religious run care homes that say they are not for profit have just hidden where the profit comes from. Without a huge pile of dedicated government money, which very few places have the will of ability to do, religious motivation for better care is all there is and where their finding comes from.
