Scanner traffic and the California Highway Patrol Traffic Incident Information page indicate a “bad traffic collision” has occurred at approximately 5:28 p.m. on State Route 20 east of Potter Valley near the Buffalo Ranch. State Route 20 has been shut down as a result of the incident.

Three vehicles are involved in the collision (a blue Mini Cooper, a black Ford SUV, and a blue truck) and the collision requires extrication.

Multiple vehicles are reportedly pulled over on the side of the road and the drivers are attempting to get parties out of the involved vehicles.

Tragic updates are being broadcasted over the scanner as of 5:45 p.m. The incident has resulted in one confirmed fatality and the Incident Commander states between five to six patients have suffered moderate to major injuries. More ambulances are being requested to the scene.

Please remember that this story is unfolding. Information is being reported as we gather it. However, some of the information coming from witnesses and initial official reports could be wrong. We will do our best to get the facts but, in the case that something is inaccurate, we will update with correct information as soon as we can.

UPDATE 6:56 p.m.: Scanner traffic indicates one-way traffic control is now in place using the eastbound lane as the thoroughfare. The Mini Cooper reportedly experienced major front end damage and is being towed from the scene.

That stretch of 20 is where eastbound drivers are still driving freeway speeds (75 Plus for most) and westbound drivers are speeding up with the anticipation of the freeway to come. Every time I travel that way it is treated like a speedway. Add to that the terrible drug/alcohol epidemic among drivers and you see the results. Just scan through RHBB over the last several days/weeks and see the ridiculous number of crashes. There are so many major injury or fatal crashes in Eureka at 25 and 30 MPH intersections.

This is such a terrible situation. My condolences to family, friends, first responders and everyone who will have to live with the aftermath of this.

Agreed.
For if Humans were more thoughtful, conscientious and conservation oriented, vehicles hopefully probably wouldn’t even be manufactured to travel much more than 40 mph..
possibly we would be more risk averse and more into protecting what we already have..
in my view..
drive like it’s Sunday everyday I say..
stay at home, save lives..
stay at your cabin, save a birds life.
leave early, never be late..

very few bipeds per acre means more of everything else!

Humans can’t make the necessary slow changes to get out of the way of our own misdeeds. Why do we expect each other to make life saving decisions at 70 when we can’t even make life saving decisions when standing still?
