Mendocino Coast Gas Station Is the ‘Most Expensive in America’ Charging $8.45 Per Gallon

Gas prices in Mendocino

Gas prices at Schlafer’s Auto Body & Repair in the tiny town of Mendocino in Mendocino County on March 8. [Photo from Galen Bach cropped and contrasted]

The seaside town of Mendocino has a single gas station called Schlafer’s Auto Body & Repair. Yesterday, coastal resident Galen Bach took a picture of the gas pump and thought it worthy of posting on social media. For a regular price of gasoline, a customer of Schlafer’s would pay $8.45, which is just shy of double the national average of $4.25, and 42% more expensive than the average gallon of gas in California.

Patrick De Haan, the Head of GasBuddy.com‘s Petroleum analysis team, told us that the price per gallon at Schlafer’s has “a very strong likelihood that this is the most expensive station in America.” De Haan reviewed GasBuddy’s records of current gas prices across the United States, and he told us, “I can’t find any more expensive at the present moment.”

Last summer Schlafer’s made national news for officially being considered the most expensive fuel in the country, at that point charging $6.73 for a gallon of gas. Owner Judith Schlafer told SF Gate’s Freda Moon after she learned their station was currently the most expensive in the country, “It has to be that way, or I’d be out of business.”

Galen Bach, according to him the “best chimney sweep ever”, told us he has had to raise his service prices across the board on the coast. He is paying more for parts, gas, and the general cost of living. He remembered buying six bags of groceries recently at Mendocino’s Harvest Market and paying $455.

Currently, the North Coast of California has one of the most expensive gasoline markets, as per AAA’s County Gas Prices map

The map provides a county-by-county breakdown of the average cost of a gallon of gas. Coming in the first place on the North Coast is Humboldt County at $5.70, second Del Norte at $5.64, third is Sonoma at $5.57, fourth is Trinity at $5.41, the fifth is Lake at $5.43, and coming in sixth for the cheapest gas currently on the North Coast is Mendocino County at $5.35. Worth noting, it looks like Mono County, east of the Sierra Nevada mountains has the state’s highest gas prices at $6.02.

It was just yesterday that California’s average gas price crept above $5 per gallon for the first time in history. De Haan told the SFGATE yesterday that he could see California’s average gallon of gas costing $6 and a growing number of gas stations charging $8 or more.

This dramatic rise in gas prices is the result of a multitude of forces converging including the deliberate dialing back of domestic oil production in 2019, sanctions against Iran and Venezuela decreasing worldwide supply, the pandemic’s heightened demand for petroleum-based products such as medical plastics, the recent sanctions levied against Russia, and finally a number of taxes specific to the state of California.

Bach told us that when he posted the photograph of gas prices in Mendocino, a heated political debate erupted on his Facebook profile with many Trump voters blaming Biden for the gas prices.

Putting aside politics, the dramatic rise in gas prices has got this father of three thinking about money in a completely different light. With these prices, Bach said,  “I have three kids I’m raising. It’s not easy at all.”

UPDATE: And today the price went up at Schlafer’s Auto Body & Repair…

Well spot prices of oil are taking a hit.
Crude down $16 a barrel
Brent down $18 a barrel
So thank Wall Street speculators for that…

But we can thank Biden administration for this:

From today in California:

“ The Biden administration on Wednesday reinstated the state’s authority to set motor vehicle pollution standards stricter than the federal government’s. That includes tighter restrictions on greenhouse gas emissions.”

Good, we need to address this ridiculous problem. People with their obsurdly large 4WD trucks that have never pulled a trailer or seen a speck of dust continually eat massive quantities of fuel while over polluting the environment, just so someone’s ego could get stroked. Greed like this needs to be addressed.

On the surface that should reduce dependence on fossil fuels, right? It would if we did things right. Electric vehicles would do it. Problem is, here in CA for instance, we like to blame commercial trucks which actually are a small percentage of the Cubic-Inch-displacement-per-ton-driven compared to your pitbull trucks, and Mom wagons. we blame leafblowers, because its usually Guatemalans running them as we drive our Land Rover out the gates. California’s rules punish those that bought the trucks, and they are not completely effective. technology chasing particulates in diesels has greatly increased engine displacement, and fuel consumption, increasing greenhouse gas production. CARB issues punitive fines to the end consumer instead of incentives. A true commercial electric truck, not a status SUV like the Tesla, costs $300,000 for a 20,000 GVWR truck. Thats equivalent to the price of a new 80,000 lb truck and transfer trailer. tThere are electric trucks from common brands that have been for sale in Europe, and even the East Coast for four years that are mysteriously absent from the market in the “Global leaders”-in-the -reduction-of-greenhouse gasses-State of California. In the meantime CA has set no restrictions on goofy giant displacement SUVs. If your Suburban has a 350 cubic inch engine, you only need those cubes to get it off the dealers lot and into YOUR driveway! otherwise except for roadraging through the ENF parking lot, you’re only using 35 CI to pull it around on average,

Dig deeper.
The number of oil Producer bankruptcies set a record in 2020, during the Trump regime.
Less market competition = higher prices.

And I’m certainly no fan of Biden.

Less market competition = higher prices.

Actually it’s Biden’s fault for reversing Trump’s energy policies and that’s why prices are high. We could be energy independent and not begging our enemies Iran and Venezuela to produce more oil but Biden would rather pander to his base.

[edit]

If President Joe Biden came out forcefully on the side of increasing US oil production, the price of a barrel could fall quickly, experts told The Post — even if it takes a while to bring that new energy online.
Just look at what happened Wednesday in the wake of the United Arab Emirates and Iraq saying they’d up production by an estimated 800,000 barrels a day: The global price of oil dropped by $22 a barrel within minutes.
If Biden signaled full-throated support for US drillers to get to work — and perhaps allowed the re-starting of the Keystone XL Pipeline from Canada — global oil prices could similarly fall sharply, the industry experts told The Post. Biden is facing renewed criticism over his restrictive energy policies – with experts noting the administration’s frosty relationship with US producers has added to the problem.
“There’s an invisible hand in the oil market – If there’s a perception that, ‘Hey, if this guy is going to free up this pipeline, he might start freeing up some leases and stuff,’” then that could help push prices down, said Phil Flynn, senior market analyst at Price Futures Group.

Republicans and other Biden critics say his actions and proposals since taking office – such as canceling the Keystone pipeline, suspension of new federal oil and gas leases, higher drilling fees on federal land and a Democratic-led push for the Federal Reserve to implement climate change policies – have sent a clear signal to US producers.

WRONG! WHat policies reduced production currently? NONE! Biden admin actual;ly approved more oil drilling permits in first year than Trump. The oil prices are directly related to the pandemic. Pre-pandemic oil demand was high and as was production. The pandemic hit and demand dramatically decreased as did production. Once GDP growth amped up (6%) demand dramatically increased but production did not follow suit because oil producers are making more money.

It’s probably not gouging. We both don’t get to audit the business’s books, but if you have ever tried to run a small business in rural CA I think you might have a different comment.

Besides it’s a free market. If you think it’s gouging then there’s a opportunity to open another gas station with lower prices and take all the business. Haha although if you ran the numbers I bet again you’d have a different comment.

It is considered price gouging. If someone there HAS to have gas to leave, no other gas station, the gas station will set a gouging price because the consumer has to buy it. Growing up, the only store for 20 miles would raise prices on children’s cold medicine during flu season. Parents would pay because their kid is sick and hurting. Again, gouging someone in need.

That’s market capitalism. The owner is proud of her gas and has every right to charge what she wants for it. Her customers (or potential customers) have every right to buy or choose another station. Gouging is when there is a limited supply of a commodity due to an emergency or unusual circumstance. Neither is the case in this instance. Just another indication that a bungling Democrat is in charge somewhere in the USA. Whenever Democrats are in charge our lives become more difficult, and wherever they are in charge that place turns into a third world shithole.

For nostalgia:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Maximum_Speed_Law

Drive 55! Works great to save fuel, and increase safety…

Now the speed limit is 70 on I-5, and everyone goes 80, which wastes about 30% more fuel!

Where the limit is 65, everyone goes 75+…

CHP has already written 50,000 tickets for exceeding 100mph this year!

People waste millions on speeding and traffic fines, and the increased cost of your insurance, traffic school etc…

Then they complain like crazy when gas goes up!

Is this trip really necessary? Do you NEED that gas-sucking pig pickup or SUV?

Slow the heck down, save money and live a little safer:

Drive 55! And buy a Prius now!

My thought also. I have been obeying the 50 mph and run 60 mph at the 65 mph. Just stay in the right lane and enjoy the extra time. I have noticed other drivers doing the same thing. And I consolidate trips. Shop once a week. Ride my bike for short errands. And wonder how the young people driving the big tires monster trucks whizzing past me at 75mph can afford a $100+ fill ups. Maybe it’s time we slow down and enjoy another pace of life! And I don’t blame Biden since he had nothing to do with the price of fuel. That is the profiteers and the 99.9% rich corporations. The Koch Brothers being one. On that note have you seen the Defense Contractors stocks. Making money selling weapons to NATO.

One way they fuel processors could help out Americans would be to temporarily level profits. Keep making money, keep paying everybody who DOES something at the company, and temporarily halt CEO pay, and stock dividends. Remember the fire at the diesel refinery at El Segundo? It was blamed for high fuel prices…shucks diesel never did go down again. That was when it became permanently pricier than gas. Now, less than two weeks of sanctions, and wow! Ya never knew you were so close to Russia up here! Now it’s “switching to summer formulations”! Sure.

Ogspyrocka

Great idea. Then everyone who owns stock in said company would sell, the ceos would quit (would you keep working for your employer if they said “sorry but we have to suspend your pay so we can keep prices down”?) And then once this brilliant buiseness strategy was fully implemented the company would fail.

Notice that they have arranged the gas buttons ‘backwards’ too.

At a normal gas station. Most people will push the left button… for a cheaper grade. If it’s arranged backwards… lots of people will select the most expensive gas. I know… I did that once.

Thankfully Rick Scott doesn’t represent the republican party of low taxes for American families…Think about this. If the poorest 47% of people in America were each forced to file and pay $10.00 in Federal taxes, how much would it cost taxpayers to process those returns? I’ll bet it would cost at least $20.00 each, cause that’s how government rolls. Back to the drawing board on this idea Scott.

The “ deliberate dialing back of domestic oil production in 2019″…

Wait, I keep seeing that it’s Biden fault.

Nooo
Guest
Nooo

That’s because US crude oil production did not drop in 2019. It fell off a cliff in 2020. The writer needs to explain what he meant. Maybe he meant the fact that gas was getting too cheap so companies dialed back the supply to raise the price? Possibly because we consumed less but that had been going on for a few years?

It dropped because demand dropped with the pandemic. It isn’t rocket science. Biden has no control over production in the short-term and very little over the long term. GDP grew by 6% in 2021 after a negative in 2020 because of the pandemic. Supply and demand…

So, today, today there are only about 129 Refineries in operation in the U.S.
Compared to 301 in 1982.
A reduction of about 57 percent.

Supply & Demand – Reducing supply with steady demand equals higher prices.
Less market competition often results in higher prices.

Now let’s look at North Dakota for another example of that Supply & Demand factor.
In North Dakota, which is one of the largest oil & gas producing states in the U.S., had 64 active drilling rigs in 6/2019.
As of 6/2022, it only has 23 active rigs.
A reduction of about 63 percent.

In April 2020 gas prices went negative.
Those negative gas prices resulted in a record number of small oil & gas producers filing bankruptcy & shutting down.
Resulting in less competition.
Resulting in higher prices.
Supply & Demand.

Prior to that Big Oil and their shareholding Cartel of largest Big Asset Management firms & Big Banks had been griping of lowered profits resulting from those smaller independent producers.
More competition in the industry was reducing the potential profits of Big Oil.

As per the Federal Reserve, the number of publicly listed companies in the U.S. has been drastically reduced from 30 per million people population in 1996 to just 12.9 per million people population in 2019.
Mostly through corporate M&A’s (mergers & acquisitions).

Reduced competition resulting in higher prices (inflation) and greater corporate profits for the fewer but much larger corps.

The Top 10 Big Asset Management firms & Big Banks, which exist as the largest shareholders/owners of the largest “competing” corporations, now hold OVER $40 trillion in assets.
The Top 60 hold over $100 trillion.

The U.S. & globe are currently seeing amongst the greatest concentrations of wealth & assets in modern history.
In both “capitalist” and “socialist” countries.
Much fewer people (the ELITE) holding & controlling much more wealth & power.

This is the reality of the economy is truly controlled.
This is the NEO-FEUDAL era.
