Remains Found Monday at the Arcata Marsh Are Human, Confirmed Arcata Police This Morning

Unknown remains discovered Monday in the Arcata Marsh are human, confirmed Lt. Todd Dokweiler of the Arcata Police Department. “A passerby noticed them,” he told us, and the remains were investigated, determined to be human, and removed the same day.

Dokweiler pointed out this morning in a phone call that the basic  facts about the death and the person who died are still being determined. He did say that the death had probably occurred with the last year, but not much else is known beyond that.

“The Coroner is going to do an examination to try to determine gender, age, things like that,” he explained. “Trying to determine do we have a homicide investigation or what, you just don’t know until you go through those steps.”

At this point, he said, it seemed likely that the remains had been moved by tidal fluctuations. He explained that the Arcata Marsh is frequented by birdwatchers and others who tend to be observant and also to walk off the trail. “Those areas [where the remains were found] are pretty heavily traveled,” he told us. “The idea that they weren’t discovered sooner tends to support that they moved about with the tides.”

He added, “It is hard to tell where the remains entered the water…There is a lot of tidal movements in that area. The remains could potentially [been deposited] some distance away from where they ended up…especially over an extended  period of time.”

The first report from the scene Monday morning indicated that the body may have been wrapped in bags which would support the idea that a homicide had occurred. However, Dokweiler said that at this point they aren’t sure if the remains became entangled in plastic bags as they were carried by water.  “It is really going to take some examination to know what the connection [of the plastic] is to the remains,” he explained.

All the examination has to be done with the utmost care in order to maintain the integrity of the investigation and that takes time.

He reminded readers that Humboldt County doesn’t have a pathologist on staff and has to arrange for one to look at deaths that require one.

Dokweiler noted that just to make identification in this kind of case “so much is determined by the condition of the remains.” He pointed out that because DNA is often the most accurate method of determining identity when the body has deteriorated and that there is a backlog of similar cases across the country to identify, there is “no short cut on that. It just takes time.”

He went on to say that it’s usually months before questions about deaths like these “are definitively answered by the Coroner’s Office.”

So yes instead of endless speculation about what happened let’s wait until the investigation is finished. Though I am sure someone is going to have to tell us anyway.

ABA,

Havent you heard?

(It’s the new, “rage”).

All the kids are doing it…

It’s “Quest”.

“Detective Quest”, also works…

And that’s what I would prefer,
IYDM.

(“someone”) is “somewhat pointed”, to the “point” of being “blunt” but is just a little too, “vague”, of a description, and not exactly “to a tea”. ??

Is that someone “rubbing my lamp”?

What is it that you wish from me?

This?

This missing gentleman would most closely fit the limited parameters released by the pertinent jurisdictional agencies.

A “Mr. Darren Pettit”.

He was known to frequent the Arcata Marsh.

I have been wondering if the plastic bags could have been makeshift “raingear”.

Now, if you’ll, so kindly, excuse me, I really must get back, “to my bottle”.

I don’t know if there was an update, I was just saying this because I personally know Darren and know that he is alive.

There is usually no shortage of those experts on here who know all about how to do stuff because they saw it on TV and always know more than the police and can’t believe the police aren’t doing this or that. Let’s see if your comment shuts them down on this one or if they really do believe they are that smart and we need their assistance.

So, everyone clamoring to shut down any speculation are saying…? What? Perfectly normal? Just a human who’s been dead out there for a while. Smug shrug. No biggee. I mean why even bother picking up the remains? Get the plastic bags out of the marsh…this will resolve itself.

“Probably occurred within the last year”.

Good to know.

That narrows it down a bit.

But, it isn’t really clear if they found a full set, or just partial remains.

That would be good to know too, but I totally understand the need for nondisclosure of that.

It’s just that there may or may not be more that could still be found…

I hope the decedent’s family soon receives closure.

Props to all those whose efforts are moving things in that direction…

Hat tip to Kym Kemp @ RHBB, for the all important write-up on this, “possible match”, from June 15th, 2021.

https://kymkemp.com/2021/06/15/family-searches-for-missing-man-in-the-humboldt-bay-region/

Sincerely, and respectfully,

“Detective Quest”

(Certainly not “Iron Clad” or in any way “confirmed”, to be sure, but definitely worth looking into, IMHO)

Is it “conjecture”, or “speculation” ?

Sure, why not? Risk? vs gain?

What risk? That I will be ridiculed?

Big deal. I’m used to it. I’ll even add,

“Even a blind dog finds a few bones”.

I’ll just keep keeping my fingers crossed, that someday, my ongoing efforts, will eventually, “bear fruit.?

Ridicule away. I don’t even care a bit.

He who laughs last, laughs best.??

I deleted that because I knew it was unfair to you. I was not trying to cause drama no matter what you think. I should have used the word people not someone. Simple as that.. Ban me moderate me. I know I did no wrong. Go back to original article see ABA’s posts. ( sorry ABA) Did I incite ABA there?
Look at all the speculation in other dead body articles. The missing kayak’r. All by lots of other people. .I am sorry if you think I have not stopped when I have.
What about mickey? Is justsayin trying to cause drama?

It isn’t a matter of right or wrong, Kym just wants to waste less time moderating her readers’ petty squabbles with each other. If we stop attacking each other, we will reduce her wasted time. We owe her that.

Lots of bodies in the last year ish? The young women are troubling at best. The man under the bridge. Woman charred on hwy 162. Then theres covelo. Ugh. I kno im all washed up and outdated. But. When we all took time to know our neighbors. And looked out for them and their children???? A body was a shocking bit of news rather than one in a series…. Since everyone got secretive and private becus of the dope patch/room /extractor in the back yard things have changed for the worse. Is it worth losing what was a pretty good way of life??

That may be true. I graduated in 82 Ive seen the pot industry develop since the 70s. Ive seen many get rich quick. Lots of lives ruined. Addiction /suicide etc. very few go away unscathed. Including myself. Im not pretending to be above any of it. Im just observing. I dont remember heroin, fentanyl or oxy til i was in my 30 s. I dont remember needles in the park? Never heard of overdoses? Covelo??? Nuf said. If a traffic stop uncovered kilos or ounces of drugs it was big news. Never heard of stolen cars?? There had been 4 stolen on my street in just the last year. Burglary was uncommon There seemed to be more drunk driving then. My point is that drugs. And drug business. Bring about violence and more crime. Its easy to play that down when you are profiting from it. I did. The other comment wasnt so much abt drugs. But more about community and knowing the people around you and looking out for one another. Hell now its legal its not a dirty little secret anymore. Lets have neighborhood bbq s again !!! Predators hate vigilant neighborhoods

The 70s and barbiturates (reds) and Quaaludes and yes, speed. Oh, and PCP. And the alcohol. And heroin. And cocaine. That was before the pot revolution as I call it.

More than a few people I knew peripherally overdosed on one thing or another. Local kids.

Sounds more like meth and opioid problems! In ’95 there was weed. In 97 there was weed. In ’95 there wasn’t oxycodone pills. In ’97 there was. Before fake Xanax made from fentanyl, there was real Xanax, prescribed to kids..fast forward…

Were either or both of those murders solved? In asking, I am not trying to make any point. I am just curious.
