74-Year-Old Ferndale Woman Detains 21-Year-Old Burglar at Gunpoint Until Sheriff’s Department Can Get to Her Rural Home

Last night, a woman in her seventies caught a man burglarizing her residence in the Ferndale area and held him at gunpoint until the Humboldt County Sheriff’s deputies could arrive at her rural home and assist her.
According to Samantha Karges, spokesperson for the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department, about 9:19 p.m, deputies were sent to a reported burglary in progress at a home in the 700 block of Poole Road.
Karges told us, “Deputies arrived on scene and observed a 74-year-old an elderly female in possession of a firearm, detaining a male suspect. The resident complied with deputies’ requests to set aside the weapon and the firearm was rendered safe.”
Deputies took the suspect, whom Karges identified as 21-year-old Dustin Beau Campbell into custody.
“Through their investigation, deputies learned that the resident arrived home to find the door open and several items out of place,”Karges told us. “While inside the home, the resident located Campbell. At that time, the resident drew her personal firearm, holding Campbell at gunpoint until deputies’ arrival.”
Karges explained, “Campbell was booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility on charges of first-degree burglary (PC 459/461(a)).”

Sorry, I should have mentioned it. I originally posted with a stock photo of an older woman with a gun. Then when the Sheriff’s Department released the photo of the suspect I replaced the stock photo with the booking photo.

Very frustrating that as an elderly female living alone in rural Humboldt I am unable to defend my self in this way because of a stupid mistake many years ago. A mistake that harmed no one, not involving violence or property. And one that was erased from my record, all my rights restored EXCEPT my right to bear arms ?

There are many ways to obtain a good quality fire arm, and keep with you for protection. And when you get one, practice with it, get good with it, and keep it close. We know so many people like you, good people, who aren’t “supposed” to have a fire arm. But they do. Find an NRA member, or other pro gun member of a pro gun group, they will help you.

For women who may be shy about handling or obtaining guns there are at least 2 local clubs which offer women only events- a much more relaxed experience. You do not need your own gun to participate.
The Redwood Gun Club on the Samoa peninsula has women’s only classes including The Women’s Handgun Safety Class at which is offered once a month on the second Saturday. The class is an opportunity to learn safe gun handling. There is a $20 fee for the class.

The Fortuna Pistol Club has Ladies only nights in Rhoner Park. I’ve gone to that one- they are very considerate, supportive and polite. They occasionally have a hands on pistol cleaning demonstration as well. You need to call for info; (707) 725-1505
As a woman who was told repeatedly that women should not handle guns, I appreciate so much that these communities have come forward with a ways for women to learn about firearms in a supportive and safe environment. Many women are ridiculed, shamed and scared away from guns even today starting at a young age. There is no need for this. If you encounter a patronizing attitude at a shop, range or club- just don’t patronize them!

My daughter got her first firearm at the age of 2 by the age of 5 she was expert with the bright pink single shot .22 and could handle a compact 9mm decently, although with the combative training i taught her i bet anyone that messes with her would rather be shot
