[UPDATE: Evacuation Order for Cedar Flat and Evacuation Warning for Burnt Ranch Areas Along Hwy 299]

Last night, the Monument Fire which began this last weekend closed Hwy 299 and forced the evacuation of multiple residents who live in the Del Loma and Big Bar Communities. Below we’ve compiled all the information available at this point.

Press release from the US Forest Service’s InciWeb:

The Monument Fire is currently mapped at 6,057 acres and is 0% contained. It continued to burn actively through the night, backing downslope. Two spot fires crossed the Trinity River and Highway 299 at around 9pm. One spot was ten acres, with structures threatened. Crews were able to access this spot overnight, and will continue work on it today. The other spot is estimated at two acres and is in inaccessible terrain roughly two miles from the active fire front, and firefighters plan to utilize aircraft to contain this spot. Neither spot is established at this time. The fire remains south of Del Loma and ½ mile east of Big Bar. On the west side, the fire crossed over Panther Creek and has spotted across Canadian Creek. On the south side, the fire is still holding on Monument Peak and on the adjacent ridges.

Public information and operations staff will be at the Skunk Point Campground to ask questions today beginning at noon. Evacuation orders were issued last night by the Trinity County Sheriff for Big Bar and Del Loma. Highway 299 has been intermittently closed and/or subject to controlled traffic. The weather is predicted to remain hot and dry through Wednesday, with cooler temperatures and higher relative humidity potentially bringing some relief Thursday and Friday. Normal up-slope, up-canyon in the afternoons and down-slope, down-canyon overnight. They are expected to get slightly stronger as we approach the weekend. Visitors to the area are advised that there are several other fires Klamath National Forest that may affect locations in the Trinity Alps. Check this page and the Klamath National Forest page for information before beginning your trip. For More Information, including downloadable maps and updates:Inciweb: https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/7750/Twitter: @ShastaTrinityNFFacebook: @ShastaTrinityNFEmail: [email protected] Information Line: (530) 628-0039 (8 am to 8 pm daily)

The Plan:

The Monument Fire is burning in the footprint of the 2008 Cedar Fire so firefighters will have to be extra aware of snags and hazardous trees.

Firefighters will be trying to keep the fire from entering the communities of Big Bar and Del Loma as well as private property around there but are preparing for structure defense in those areas.

In addition they have to protect infrastructure through the area including the highway, communication towers, and electrical lines.

The Weather:

According to the National Weather Service out of Eureka, the weather is expected to be hot and dry through Wednesday. Temperatures will range through the 90’s throughout the fire area. The humidity could drop as low as 12%. Winds continue to make firefighting difficult

The Roads:

"This picture from the night of 08/01/2021 on SR-299 near Big Bar shows the power and devastation wildland fires can wield. "

According to Caltrans as of 8:35 p.m.: “State Route 299 is currently closed from approximately 2 miles west of Del Loma to approximately 1 mile east of Big Bar (Trinity County) due to the #MonumentFire.” There is no estimated time of reopening. They suggest choosing alternate routes. See here for alternate routes.

Please note that heat imagery (which is not always precise) shows several relatively small spot fires have jumped north of Hwy 299 and the Trinity River.

Information for Evacuation:

According to the Trinity County Sheriff’s Office, “Evacuation Centers will be at the First Baptist Church in Weaverville, CA, and Willow Creek VFW Hall, 20 Kimtu Road, Willow Creek.”

During ANY fires that may be happening, this link is VERY important!

https://maps.nwcg.gov/sa/#/%3F/%3F/39.9402/-123.1009/9

It shows hot spots in real-time, and folks can monitor the movement of both the wildfires and purposefully lit “backfires” that both the USFS and Cal Fire start. When the incident command center says they are “filling in the islands”, they intend on increasing the size of the fire. During the August Complex Fire last year, many of the backfires that were started caused devastating results. The decision to do so was made by incident commanders who were unfamiliar with the area, even after being told by the LOCAL firefighters, (volunteers and Cal Fire), that it would be a dangerous choice. Along with the USFS’s policy of letting a small naturally-caused fire to burn, they often order crews to leave an active fire in the evenings. Many individual home-owners were left alone to protect their own structures; many of those individuals who stayed, ended up saving their homes, while their neighbors who evacuated, lost everything! These policies NEED to be changed!

This is an article from the LA Times that is eye-opening……………

Not real time. NASA IR satellites pass over every 8 hours and it takes up to 4 hours to process the data.

Toni I agree wholeheartedly!
Don’t forget the Red Salmon complex last summer. They were just monitoring it as it was natural. Then they removed that from the inciweb site.
Then when our air was 5 times the number for hazardous they continued to do back burns.
They don’t listen to the people.
Not criticizing the firefighters just the commanders.

I talked to 2 friends up in Burnt Ranch today at around 5:00 pm, one said that they are on standby for evacuation, she said that if they get the evacuation order, they will have to leave in 15 minutes. She is planning on leaving now, packing up and having to drive west on 299 (because 299 is closed going east), she said that she has to drive down 101 all the way to HWY 20 to get to 5 and then go to near Redding where she will shelter with family.
She said the other person is planning on staying at the house and fighting the fire, they have been raking debris all day and are exhausted. There is a pond on the property, and they do have a fire pump and generator, plus they are on a small community water system.
My other friend lives up in Burnt Ranch estates said he talked to the Sheriff, and was issued a warning, he said that he had 1300 gallons of water in a tank, a pump and a generator, but he might not be psychically able to set everything up at this time, so he will probably have to bail.
Let’s hope that the fire doesn’t spread to Burnt Ranch.

1300 is not enough water anyway.

Has an Incident Management Team been established? Yesterday I read that a Type 1 Team was on order, now there’s no news to that regard.
Also where is the ICP Base Camp??

thank you for keeping us updated, I have family and friends that are threatened by this fire.
Keeping a close eye on it from where I live in Las Vegas, thank goodness for the internet.
Our’s is the McMorrow property on Ranger Station Road, fortunately the fire is still a bit more than a mile and a half away on the north side of the river, but it’s seriously threatening good friends and family on the other side on Patterson Ranch rd. As far as I know they have all been evacuated.
