Twelve candidates for Eureka and Arcata city council seats have signed a pledge to take substantial steps to address the climate crisis if they are elected on November 3.
Eureka City Council candidates Scott Bauer, Eddie Morgan, and Liza Welsh have signed the Climate Pledge. Arcata City Council candidates Stacy Atkins-Salazar, Emily Grace Goldstein, Oryan Peterson-Jones, Paul Pitino, Sarah Schaefer, Kimberly White, Michael Winkler, Collin Yeo, and Camilla Zapata have signed the pledge.
By signing the Climate Pledge, these candidates have committed to “use all the tools at [their] disposal to bring about a just and equitable transition from fossil fuels well before 2045, making meaningful progress by 2030.” Candidates also committed to “support and champion” the following climate strategies:
- Transition transportation systems from fossil fuels by 2045;
- Develop incentives for infill development and discourage greenfield conversion;
- Eliminate carbon emissions from new and existing buildings by 2045;
- Transition from fossil fuel electricity generation by 2025, and invest in renewable, locally- produced energy;
Guarantee Green jobs for all who seek them.
The pledge was developed by local climate action group 350 Humboldt. “The climate crisis is extremely urgent,” said 350 Humboldt Steering Committee Member Pat Carr. “We need rapid and effective action to address it. So we identified the most important actions local officials could take and incorporated them into the pledge. Candidates who signed this pledge are committing to be climate champions. We encourage voters who care about the climate to support them.”
The full text of the pledge, along with supporting materials and an updated list of candidates who have signed, can be found at https://world.350.org/humboldt/climate-pledge-copy/ .

Finally somebody taking man made global warming seriously. We have ravaged are earth long enough. It is time to repay her and restore her back to pristine condition for generations to come. You’re children and they’re children thank you.
You can’t fix stupid!!! There is a 26,000 yr sun cycle that we are in right now. This means we are closer to the sun now then we have been in 26,000 yrs. That is why the end of the Mayan calendar has a angry sun face because this is when its gets very hot and then eventually we will have another ice age. Doesn’t anyone go to college anymore or study anything besides pot laws??? They are truly banking on the stupid people of the world. I am going to start selling fresh air in boxes. I bet all these same idiots would buy it, lol.
“Doesn’t anyone go to college anymore”
College is the problem. That is where they are learning all of this green bullshit! Mention the 26,000 year cycle, solar flares or any other natural phenomenon and you will be deemed a heretic. You will also be labeled a racist for good measure. Then Google, Facebook and Twitter (The Ministry of Truth) will ban you for spreading false information and not adhering to newspeak. Point any of this out and you are a conspiracy theorist who listens to Alex Jones and thinks George Soros is trying to usher in the New World Order. Got it? In short, Liberalism is a Mental Disorder.
Yeah, because FB and websites with axes to grind are so much more reliable!
My thoughts exactly.
How about fiscal responsibility FIRST!
TAKING A PLEDGE ABOUT SOME GLOBAL WARMING SCAM. ..
CONNECTING THE DOTS WITH A PLEDGE, and policy that will inevitably translate to higher taxes and fees aND more regulation,
Yet there is no mention of eliminating corporate junk food.
You are what you eat, and a system that refuses to address the daily intake of toxic chemicals and pesticides from commercial farming has little desire to save humans.
It’s not too hard to see why people like gates can implement a supply chain management of shit food, but say the VACCINES are the solution.
A lack of aspirin is the cause of headaches?
I was just wondering how they were going to do this? Your link is not working.
Love how renewable means using destructive batteries and the continued contamination of earth. Yet dams and nuclear power are looked upon as negative
Don’t forget the wind energy project they shut down because it would ruin their view! These dipshits just want to talk the talk!
Look up the percentage of air pollution in our state that literally comes from China. Add that to the under management of our forests and the uncontrolled fires it causes. Solution? Educate the public and environmental groups to stop the constant litigation for any type of forest management so we can save more of our forests. Stop buying Chinese products. This approach isn’t popular with legal firms, large corporations, Walmart, Amazon, etc. and the politicians who recieve their campaign money.
Word. Up to 20% of mercury in west coast streams is due to Chinese emissions. But people need their cheap walmart crap from China, who is waging cold war against us economically/politically/informationally/biologically, instead of buying American quality goods supporting their neighbors with jobs while keeping the externalities in our own backyard. Boomer politics since Clinton through Obama have screwed America.
Where does the other 80+% come from?
Everybody ragging on China is only paying attention to how people talk and not what they do. China has achieved a tremendous reduction in air pollution over the past 20 years. And it’s been done with industrialization occurring at a breakneck pace, while the American reduction has accompanied deindustrialization. China’s rail-centered transportation system is much more efficient and less polluting than our own automotive-centered one. Some of China’s reduction has been accomplished by replacement of older coal-fired powerplants with newer, more efficient and cleaner ones. But the big factor is replacement of coal with nuclear power generation. China is also a world leader in the storage and switching technologies that are essential for efficient deployment of large-scale solar and wind power generation.
Russia:Democrats::China:Republicans
China just took over Hong Kong by force. Did you forget that?
No they didn’t. The HKAR still has the same government as before. Pompous Pompeo is just crying because his attempted color revolution backfired.
China may be replacing coal-fired generators in China but they are building them as fast as they can in Africa.
The only person-made crisis about this is the alleged crisis itself. OMG we’re all gonna die! They’ve been crying this since the 70s. You want clean energy? Go nuclear. Then Gruesome Newsome won’t have to turn off all our lights because his solar fiasco doesn’t generate enough electric power. Leave the natural gas plants alone. And where we gonna plug in all these electric cars anyway? This whole fake crisis is all about taking your money and them gaining political power over you.
“And where we gonna plug in all these electric cars anyway?”
Do you mean the electric cars whose electricity comes from fossil fuels, whose batteries are made with rare earth elements mined (remember mining is evil) with diesel machines, then processed in factories powered by fossil fuels, then transported by diesel powered trucks? Those electric cars?
There is only one coal-fired left plant in California (though CA does get some electricity from two out of state plants, on in UT, the other in NM).
Granted a third of the electricity comes from natural gas.
As renewables improve and expand, that is likely to change.
Oregon, likewise only has one coal-fired plant left, (with some energy also coming from a plant in Montana), which supplies about 15% of Portland’s power. BPA also supplies power to CA as well as several other western states.
California has rolling blackouts. That doesn’t happen anywhere else in this country.
One thing that’s overlooked is the tremendous reduction in greenhouse gases already accomplished with the replacement of coal by natural gas. The difference is even more stark when the entire production cycle – extraction, processing, and transportation – is considered. Lots of nasty byproduct emissions, including greenhouse gases and radiation, in the production of coal. And guess what allowed so much coal to be replaced with natural gas. Fracking! Oh no!
One bit of silliness is the mandate of some jurisdictions, such as Arcata, for electrical rather than natural gas heating and cooking in new construction. The ultimate source for that electrical energy is natural gas. Over 50% of the thermal energy in electrical power generation is lost. So that stupid mandate results in a use of natural gas that generates at least twice the greenhouse gas per BTU at the use point.
The role of out-of-state power generation in our energy supply shows how deceptive statistical presentations of “California energy sources” can be.
It turns out politicians aren’t very good engineers. They don’t care or don’t understand thermodynamics. The end results is all that matters.
Maybe there should be some kind of exam to qualify to run for public office. If someone in power isn’t literate in basic science, statistics, economics, and other disciplines impinging on public policy, they can do a lot of damage with their ignorance.
That seems reasonable… of course if the voters were reasonably educated we wouldn’t elect dolts to run the government.
Angela Robinson,
Just like your response to my prior comment, you have said nothing other than making my case for me; thank you. We get power from coal plants in other states! HALF of the power in CA comes from natural gas, a fossil fuel thank you. And as Thirdeye pointed out, natural gas generates twice the greenhouse gas per BTU. To say nothing of the sky high energy costs in CA coupled with rolling blackouts.
50% of natural gas used in California is locally produced, but only 30% of California’s energy is from natural gas. (edited: it is closer to 35%)
As I pointed out, there are TWO out of state coal plants CA gets it’s energy from. California also buys hydro energy from BPA (though I think that only covers a smaller part of northern CA.).
If I recall correctly, CA has reached it’s current goal of 33% plus renewable energy sources.
And are you in favor of alternative and evolving energy sources? If not, then are you just sitting on the sidelines carping, imagining you have some real “gotcha”? Were you one of the old horse and buggy guys who said that gasoline powered vehicles would never take off. And they scare the horses, too!
“And as Thirdeye pointed out, natural gas generates twice the greenhouse gas per BTU.”
Please read more carefully.
The recent shortage was due to peak demand from air conditioners. Solar is eminently suited to that particular demand. But you are correct that nothing is likely to replace thermal (either fossil or nuclear) electricity as a baseline power source for the foreseeable future.
I guess another definition of liberal is HOAX CRAZED. Give us a break. It’s all lies. Everything to the Trump hoaxes to the climate change hoax.
It’s not a hoax, it’s a molehill, which they are treating like a mountain. That’s the left wing m.o. , find a molehill, turn it into a mountain, then assume more totalitarian control….in the name of keeping us safe of course. Just like the Scam-a-demic…the war on terror ect, ect…molehills to mountains as an excuse for control, that’s the leftist way
Absent any constructive ideas they resort to the crisis hoax to keep the narrative, based in emotions, alive and thriving. Once again, it’s all about the money. Liberals love to solve problems that don’t exist, and the bureaucracy is their milk-cow.
//Guarantee Green jobs for all who seek them.// Ha ha ha right !
We can relax knowing the 2 smiley faced young socialists have this part figured out.
Code enforcement army cometh.
Does anyone know what infill development and greenfield conversion mean?
How can a small town guarantee green jobs for all who want them? Better get cracking and create some green jobs Arcata. Is sweeping the sidewalks and picking up litter from the side of the road considered a green job? Maybe this isn’t as difficult as it sounds.
Why are my comments being moderated? What did I say, which rules did I break, to earn such an honor?
It was somewhere back in September. I believe there were two comments close together when you laid a string of fuck everyone’s including me, told another commenter to leave the site because you thought her calm answer was racist, etc. But I have a sucky memory. I decided that you weren’t capable of driving in the comment section without some monitoring.
wonderful !
Climate changes all the time. It’s a cycle. The biosphere works that way. Like the virus hysteria hoax and the Clinton-derived Russia hoax it is just a lead in to globalist socialism.
Dont drink the Koolaid kids. The scary specter of Jim Jones is a Soros and Silicon Valley ghost meant to spook you into voting Demonrat.
Here’s what these billionaires are up to using their useful idiot Marxists :

I wonder if they’ll figure out how to raise taxes, water/sewer and trash rates, along with their own compensation before they get anywhere close to figuring out there is no way in hell they are able to “guarantee Green jobs for all who seek them.”
This is all fine and dandy but compared to other countries, the US today is clean as a whistle. Until China, India, Nigeria, etc. clean up their acts, no measurable impact on global warming/climate change will happen. Whether or not Trump gets re-elected doesn’t make a difference on this subject no matter what the democrats want you to believe.
So, just shrug our shoulders right?
It is easier to point out other’s “sins” when we do clean up our own backyard first.
Point is our backyard isn’t bad anymore. Remember Al Gore’s “Inconvenient Truth”? What happen to all those dire predictions made in that movie? Last I checked, Miami isn’t underwater.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/weather/2019/08/08/analysis-sea-level-rise-is-combining-with-other-factors-regularly-flood-miami/
Well, I don’t think the climate is being destroyed by CARS… Electric cars have to be CHARGED, you know… and, PG&E raises the price ALL THE TIME, so, it will cost just as much for me to go buy some RUBBER DOG SHIT and TRAINING BRAS at TARGET anyway…
Generating electricity means we need GIANT WINDMILLS in the REDWOOD FOREST so we can all keep our DEPS lit up all night…
AND, it’s all because of those COWS squirting METHANE! Can’t we BURN the METHANE?
Americans NEED lots of HAMBURGERS to keep us as FAT as TRUMP! You know???
I know, we could all live in the forest, with THE TOOTH FAIRY and THE EASTER BUNNY, and THEY will take CARE of us!
So elect some ZAFTIG MOMMIES! They will FIX EVERYTHING for us!!
Thanks Ladies!! Thanks Susan Seaman!! Thanks Kim the Pro Tem Mayor!! That Pixie Dust took care of EVERYTHING!!
