Press release from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office:

Today, Sept. 15, 2020, the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors authorized the declaration of a Local Emergency as a result of the wildfires burning in the region.

The August Complex West Zone Fire continues to burn east of Humboldt County and has prompted evacuation warnings and orders for residents in the southeastern portion of the county.

The declaration allows for the county to seek state and federal reimbursement for fire damage repairs and other associated impacts. The amount of funding depends on the agencies that assist, including the State of California and federal government.

The County of Humboldt is requesting all available response and recovery assistance from the State of California and its agencies, including the California Public Utilities Commission, and the United States government and it’s agencies, as deemed appropriate by the Governor of California, including funding under the California Disaster Assistance Act and the federal Stafford Act.

For more information regarding the August Complex West Zone’s current impact on Humboldt County and current evacuation areas, please go to humboldtsheriff.org, visit @HumCoOES on Facebook and Twitter, or call 707-268-2500.

Well maybe now that they have the claim to their money they’ll allow people back to their homes that are days away from the fire given the current weather patterns. Allot of people are getting incredibly upset over this. It was understandable on day one with a red flag warning and 30 mph gusts but at this point with the current weather all humboldt county is doing is making another Petri dish for civil unrest with our local government. Listening to the calfire representative what they seem most concerned with is the “traffic on the dangerous roads” well yeah we’ve been asking the county to fix them for decades upon decades and now you seem shocked they aren’t “safe” at this point a couple of monkeys could do as good of running this county.

I drive on that whole section of AP rd, it’s not in bad shape at all, They fixed a lot of the bad parts , except for a couple of patches heading out past AP. Calfire didn’t say “traffic on the dangerous roads” they said “ dangerous traffic on these roads”. They even went into detail about a few instances where locals actually hit some of their fire/rescue vehicles. With resources drawn down, they can’t be responsible for all of us local yokels driving around during this fire emergency. 1/2 of our community knows how to deal with an emergency and embrace the one for all all for one spirit, but what’s become painfully obvious is the other 1/2 are hysterical easy to anger divisive complainers that never seem to ever think about anyone but themselves. Calfire will lift the evac order when they clearly can see that they have a good handle on that one section nearest Humboldt. Calfire priority is Life over property.

The government is good, the government is great! In a crisis, the government, “you are on your own we can’t help”. I’ve been in the evac zone everyday, still waiting on calfire to do something proactive.

We’ll be lucky if some out of town firefighters don’t meet on the unmarked section of Alderpoint Road that just disappears on a blind corner with no warning down 100′ into Carter Creek, just east of the Alderpoint bridge.
That’s been like that for decades.
It’s a death trap, especially for non locals.

Since the August complex fires started in federal land why don’t the feds just pick up the bill since it was their lightning fire complex which they allowed to merge into one huge fire in the first place?

Do the feds require the money be spent on fire damage repairs or do they just throw it at the county to plug up the general fund and the county will continue to neglect repairs of Southern Humboldt’s infrastructure? We are like the unwanted step child that brings in the bacon.

Interesting the Board of Supervisors actually got out of bed to “Do something.” Most of the time none of them even know the difference between a forest fire and a snowstorm. They are useless politicians trying to pad their own pockets, nothing more. The day they finally care about something or someone other than themselves, hell will indeed actually freeze over. They are a total waste.

I sincerely hope the Stewart Ranch will be fine. Have known the Stewart’s for years, and they are just plain great people. Stay safe Bill Jr. and your new wife. Her Dad Mike lives across the street from me, great folks.

I concur. And they were such a huge help to me during the 2015 lightning fires! I’ve been wishing I could get in there and repay the effort. I’ll just have to pay it forward someday.
