Now no one will report for jury duty. Shut down the court system. Open invitation to commit any crime. LOL

This is actually pretty funny. Active viruses running around continuously, getting people sick every year, and it takes something that’s not even here (and when it was, was no big deal) to make this public policy.

“Urgent,” too!

Oh, save me.

If you ever been called for jury service in Eureka, you’d know that first you are packed in a room with a hundred or more people for at least an hour, get marched up to a court room with to sit some more hours with another 30 people or so. It would be a virus expressway.

Glad they are taking this seriously. Call me weird, but I like old people and folks that survived cancer treatment and other folks hit hard by this virus. By the time everyone is sick it’s too late.

Unfortunately, it wouldn’t be just old people. If enough people get really sick all at once, hospitals and medical personnel are going to be forced to make choices because there won’t be enough equipment, people and supplies to take care of the ones who need it. Do you take a 60 year old man off the ventilator because a teenager needs it after a car accident and they are all being used? Or if an emergency appendectomy comes in but the medical personnel are sick and unable to provide services? Or not having a bed in ICU because there are more patients than beds?

So taking care to reduce the spread of the virus is a civic duty that everyone needs to do. Not so that you avoid the illness but so that the spread is slowed down and spread out so not everyone needs hospitalization at the same time.

Kym, has there been any formal response to Covid-19 from Redwoods Rural or the Phelps? So many people coming back from winter vacation right now, and some nasty colds going around. Is either offering testing? Has Estelle said anything? It would be nice to know if Sohum has a plan.

As of Monday, 4,836 Americans had been tested for the novel coronavirus, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. South Korea, by contrast, has tested more than 189,000 people. The two countries announced their first coronavirus cases on the same day.

Yet for all your touting of the South Korean mass testing as material, their deaths from the virus are still higher than the US’s although they have a fifth of the population. It will be interesting to see whether mass testing, while reassuring, really effects the spread which goes on before testing reveals the disease. It seems intuitively so but that depends on the tractabilty of the population.

The South Koreans are well set up to do a lot of testing. The educational culture is cut throat and they become workaholics afterwards. Few other places in the world are like that. Certainly not the culture in the US where work is not so valued.r

Math, bro.

0.6% death rate in Korea.

0.01% in Germany.

We aren’t counting virus cases and we’ve been accused of not testing deaths in Washington.

Even Italy, with a 6.8% death rate is testing thousands every day.

If we ever get on the ball, maybe we will know how bad we are doing.

I was in Rite Aid last week and there was a really sick lady in the pharmacy line who had a bad cough. She had a small child with her that was roving around touching everything. She was wearing a face mask and as I said, she had a REALLY bad raspy cough. I wonder if she had it and was just not going in. Or if the doctor sent her home because there were not tests and she was not critical. I heard of a report about how China tracked the first cases of Covid19 in Wuhan using their notorious camera and facial recognition system. They tracked the first cases in real time and found one person caught the virus after getting on the bus 30 minutes after an infected person left the bus. He was 4 rows back too. The virus lingers in the air in enclosed spaces. Not the most common mode of transmission but it is possible. Should I be worried ?

Perspective.

For every 1000 common flu cases 1 person dies.

For every 100 Covid cases, 3 to 4 people die.

For every common flu death, 36 die from Covid.

We also live with the common flu. We ignore it. We dont lock down cities. We aren’t vocal about cleanliness and hygiene. We just ignore it, and we lose .1% of cases to death.

Covid is up against heightened awareness, locked cities, extra precautions and had only had 3 months to do it.

Wash your hands!

You simply don’t know the death rate from Covid-19. Even the a well defined system for evaluating flu recognizes that not all people with the flu show up at a hospital to be treated. The CDC estimated the total number by a survey done in 2010 which asked people whether they went for treatment of not when they came down with symptoms of the flu. Such a survey does not exist for covid-19 which seems much more variable than flu in causing symptoms. A whole lot of people must have had it without getting so sick they stayed home or it wouldn’t have spread so fast. Right now no one knows how many so no one can say how many people die who get the virus. I suspect the numbers of mild cases are much larger than known.

What is true is that there is no natural or artifically acquired resistance for covid-19, which is apparently easily spread, so it is likely almost everyone will get it sooner or later. The goal should be to spread out the infections so that medical services are not overwhelmed by everyone showing up at the same time.

I agree the better behavior would slow the spread. I doubt there will be enough people who will wash their hands or stay home or even agree it’s a serious issue to effectively slow it up. I remember the number of times people came into offices where I worked saying that they were sick so it was a convenient time for them since they were off work anyway. And I long since gave up eating at office functions because I saw for myself how many people never washed their hands leaving the restrooms. Ever. It will surprise me to see that much of a change in behavior now.

The regional variations of death rates makes statistical aggregation of data misleading at this point. Death rates have ranged from 0.5% to 8% regionally. Until there are a lot more tests (which are showing to not be entirely reliable with false positives and false negatives) and a lot more data any numbers are marginally useful.

My comment is using the global mean of known cases to make a point that this is far more deadly than the flu.

A 34:1 ratio right now.

Something many commentors here seem to fail to grasp. Limbaugh and Trump fail to grasp it also.

Let’s make the point that I’m making together, because it is fact.

Again, with the huge regional variations the global mean is a pointless number at the moment. There are too many variables to explain that variation currently. More data is needed and any of the people putting these numbers together will say the same: this is the best we have but the potential error rate is very significant.

“Let’s make the point that I’m making together, because it is fact.” – I have no idea what that means.

How can you think about regional variables in numbers when you refuse to acknowledge the numbers themselves?

I’m talking to two seperate people in Italy. I know 1 reason at least for their high mortality rate:

Misinformation in social circles creating inaccurate memes that this is just a flu.

Everyone in Italy was ignoring the officials, look where it got them.

You’re extrapolating worldwide data based on conversations with 2 people in Italy?

The regional variations show statistical anomalies of either data collection or some other variable that has not been determined. That fact skews the viability of the data itself.

No, there are comments and media stories from since Milan was locked down all over the internet about the lack of seriousness by the Italian people.

It is also a fact Italians are not well known for discipline.

It is also a fact that I have 2 contacts in 2 different regions confirming what I’m telling you.

Also, you find articles that came out today regarding how Italians are “just now” starting to take it seriously with the full lockdown and their staggering death rate.

There is a general distrust of authorities in Italy. Some of it is quite justified. Between police and mob, they’ve taken advantage of Italians for ages.

I looked into the amount of smokers in Italy, it’s not an abnormally high percentage.

2 other factors are a high amount of elderly folks and a very huggy kissy culture.

The main factor however from my research is carelessness and misinformation.

What is clear is that you can’t have it both ways- either the rate of infection is much higher and only appears lower because the US is not testing and thus the death rate is lower than it really is or you assume that the WHO and CDC figures are accurate and there are exactly the number of cases of covid-19 and the US testing is not meaningful. Which is incredibly unlikely.

This is not politics. It’s arithmetic. Even if you accept the data for covid-19 deaths, the other part of the fraction is the number of actual infections. So, although you may have the exact numbers of deaths (shaky in itself), no one knows the exact number of cases of covid-19. Way too many infections are not even noticed much less confirmed.

The mortality rate in China may be 3% (if you think they really have caught all the cases in their stats) but outside of China, it varies from under 1% in South Korea to Italy’s 9%. What this tells anyone is that the true mortality rate HAS NOT YET BEEN ESTABLISHED. And probably won’t be for a year. And will always have an element of uncertainty.

CDC director says some coronavirus-related deaths have been found posthumously

During the House Oversight Committee discussion on the novel coronavirus response, the director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said some deaths from coronavirus have been discovered posthumously.

Rep. Harley Rouda asked CDC director Dr. Robert Redfield if it’s possible that some flu patients may have been misdiagnosed and actually had coronavirus.

“The standard practice is the first thing you do is test for influenza, so if they had influenza they would be positive,” Redfield said.

Rouda then asked Redfield if they are doing posthumous testing.

Redfield said there has been “a surveillance system of deaths from pneumonia, that the CDC has; it’s not in every city, ever state, every hospital.”

Rouda followed up and asked, “So we could have some people in the United States dying for what appears to be influenza when in fact it could be the coronavirus?”

The doctor replied that “some cases have actually been diagnosed that way in the United States today.”

Yup. And also, they aren’t discussing the likelyhood that you can have influenza and Covid simultaneously.

How many did we miss?

Why Donald Trump needs to let competent people take charge of the COVID-19 pandemic response

As we all grapple with what the novel coronavirus means for various aspects of our lives, ranging from canceled public events to closed schools and volatile financial markets SPX, -5.75% TMUBMUSD10Y, 0.808% , it’s worth asking a fundamental question. What would a normal president say and do in response to this crisis?

It’s painfully obvious that no normal person — let alone any typical president — would respond in the way President Donald Trump has.

At each stage, he has lied, he has created confusion, he has made reckless predictions, and he has, once and for all, demonstrated his manifest unfitness to serve.

We may not be able to fix the damage that Trump has already caused, but at least we can stop him from doing any more harm. Public figures ought to be calling on the president to resign from office, to get out of the way and let competent people step in.

And there is the reason for your insistent agitation. Tried Russians collaboration, sex assault, criminality, immigration and malfeasance- do you really care about the health of the US population or just making sure Trump is blamed for something? The old story of crying wolf comes to mind. When repeatedly hysteria over Trump has been already drummed up and it turned out to be useless noise, you credibility is gone. When the wolf actually shows up, that people don’t listen, it’s on you. All you can do to try and gain it back is to be as accurate as possible.

A private conversation. I did not know about that. That’s very nice of Gavin to be kind to Trump after Trump said he didn’t want the boat here because it would “double the numbers” of cases.

It is being handled by experts who report to Pence & Trump, who report to the people.

He’s had several round tables with The experts and has Pence in daily contact with WHO, CDC, NIH et al. Of course you wouldn’t know that if you only watch CNN although even CNN is having a hard time getting the experts to complain about Trump, they keep trying though.
You don’t really expect him to personally hand you your hand sanitizer do you?

The crisis also is a stock market crisis, and yes he had a round table with these experts today too.
The folks that thought Trump was an idiot to dare to want to bring manufacturing back to the USA whined their heads off. So now we are at the mercy of China for everything from drug supplies to toilet paper.

And the folks that screamed Russia, Russia, Russia well it’s Russia trying to take down the oil market. Can’t wait to see how they spin that into helping Trump get elected.

Have you been watching Hillary take Sanders down, again ?

They are common sense and Trump has already confirmed doing that and more in his speech last night. However not with the open borders that Bernie wants
because we can’t afford to pay for the whole world although, Trump has offered to assist many Countries including Iran with their fight against the virus.

The 4 years of Trump bashing is just over the top and anyone in their right mind wants to stop this virus. That includes Trump, Bernie & Joe.

Bernie has lost the Country because while he tells of a good thing about Cuba regarding literacy he leaves out the fact that Cuba was a wealthy country( not a perfect country ) before Castro and now the people live in poverty. Americans moved to Cuba before Castro now Cubans try to escape. The truth can be hidden by what you leave out of a story as well as by what you include. Most of the Country didn’t fall for the illusion. Why California bought it I can’t explain.

There is a lot of improvement needed in this Country and life is much to hard for most people but it’s not all Trumps fault and he is actually trying to improve things with Democrats fighting him every step of the way.

No democrat would approve of Bernie or Joe as POTUS being dealt with the way they deal with Trump although the stage has now been set.

It’s sad for the whole country. United we stand divided we fall.

Cases popping up like wildfire everywhere, now that testing is ramped up.
COVID19 has already been here for awhile, probably at least 3 months!
A Virus like this could travel the globe in months, mutate and come back around.

So many people are carriers with no symptoms, Tom Hanks & Wife tested positive for crying out loud, and a basketball player from the Utah Jazz tested positive and he was hardly sick!

Do way more people have it right now than we think? Absolutely!
Have way more people had it already than we think? Yes.
Is it global already, even with strict bans? Mostly.

Deaths : 4634

Confirmed Cases: 126,369

Death Rate: 0.366

The number of unknown cases, many with mild symptoms are well unknown, but are most positively astronomical already.
Higher than a kite which puts the real death rate way lower, probably 0.1 inline with the common flu.
Don’t panic people, we got this ~
