Supporters of First District Supervisor Rex Bohn gathered in front of the Humboldt County Courthouse this morning with signs announcing, “We Stand With Rex” following his controversial statement last month.

Supporters with signs.

Bohn has acknowledged asking in March if a Mexican meal was “so authentic that we’re going to want to steal hubcaps after we eat.” He then wrote in a Facebook post about a month after his statement,

It’s come to my Attention that I was overheard making an off-colored remark to someone. If my admittedly inappropriate poor taste in a joke has offended anyone I deeply and profoundly apologize. I believe that anyone who looks at my track record and history of support for diverse groups and individuals across the entire spectrum of ethnic and interest groups can see where my heart and true feelings are. Love Humboldt

The gathering supporting Rex Bohn.

The gathering supporting Rex Bohn included dogs and kids.

Supporters decided to gather to show their appreciation “for all the positive things that Rex Bohn has done and continues to do for the community,” as noted in a letter today.Humboldt County First District Supervisor Rex Bohn greeting cameras and supporters before today's Board meeting.

If people are determined to make anything a “racially charged” incident, they will. And will, and will, and will… Did any of this political supporters raise that issue that it should be linked by the reporter in this article? Or is it that reporter has decided that it needs to be linked? Frankly ever political activity that Bohn has is going to be “following his controversial statement”. Does that mean you feel that nothing he does is ever going to be considered unrelated to it?

The joke issue wasn’t just “brought up”; it was the sole point. Were any of the supporters asked a single question about why they were there? Was Rex Bohn contacted (you know he would been happy to talk with you)? Was it possible that a speech was delivered but never mentioned? How long did they stay? How many were there?

You know people, Kym is the one who gives us the paper and pens to put our stuff out there. Leave her alone, and concentrate on your issue. You cannot write to the local papers using the names we do on this site. If you have time to berate her, you have time to write or call the parties yourself. I do. I have called and gotten response from Rex, and others. Then, you can report your findings here for us to see. I mean, Kym prints all the things I send her, and I know she does not agree with all I say. Yet, she puts it out there. The local papers are not at all as fair, and they do not have the courage to print things they do not agree with. So let’s concentrate on the issue being reported on, not the reporter. And if you think you can do a better job, go for it, start your own, and see how it works. Because EVERYONE I talk to says the first thing they do is put on the coffee, and check the Redhead. And they are glad to have her. We are lucky to have her. Thank You

Stuber- my issue is with the press. And the issues reported and importantly not reported. That means Kym in her way too. If the previously reported but now repeated parts of this article are dropped out, it comes down to Bohn met with supporters outside outside the courthouse this morning. ???? That’s it. Before the first sentence is finished, the “controversial statement,” ie joke in poor taste, is mentioned, followed by a repeat of his apology off face book, followed by a statement about what those supporters thought based on not talking to a single one of them but based on a letter from a person who may or may not even been there. It’s as if the sole purpose was not to inform but to keep a rehashed controversy going.

That is what Fox does. That is what NBC does. Keep every small controversy It is what reporters have come to see as their business, their bread and butter, their raison d’etre, their morality. They exacerbate difference and frustrate reconciliation with this constant war drumming.

I agree that I am dumping a lot on Kym’s head but if you’ve noticed the press is singularly resistant to feedback from their consumers. This is the one place I know to voice these concerns directly. Since so much is “free” internet content, consumers can’t even vote with their dollars. Since the same stories appear under different guises in various sources, news has become a rancorous popularity contest in which unbiased information is not even a contestant. The reader has become what is sold, not the customer. I was not exaggerating when I said the press gave us Trump. If it doesn’t worry a person what comes next, it should. It’s likely to be a more experienced, more successful demagogue and it won’t matter if it’s from the far left or far right. It will be awful.

Is exposed as what? Someone who knows an good Mexican joke when he hears one? I think the funniest thing(in an OMG, WTF kind of way)I’ve heard out of this whole thing, so far, was the response a white person gave to a Mexican man who wrote that he thought the joke was funny.

The Mexican man recalled how, when he was a kid, he and his friends would go out and steal hubcaps, and thought a reference to that was a funny way to authenticate the food.

The white person actually had the gall to upbraid the Mexican, and tell him he, “had it wrong,” because he wasn’t as offended as the white person thought he should be, as if a Mexican person would be too stupid to know when to laugh, and at what, without a white person telling them.

That is extremely patronizing, and I think all you white people out there, with your fake outrage, should take a good hard look at yourself, and see how hilarious you really would be, if you were not so…sorry.

Meanwhile, the best Mexican jokes I’ve heard have come from Mexicans, the best black jokes from blacks, the best blond jokes from a blond girl sitting next to her blond mother, who had just sniffingly informed my uncle and I that, “some people are offended by that type of joke,” and of course, the best white jokes come from white people.

Because if you can’t laugh at yourself (and others), you’re just a sorry-ass, uptight, politically correct jerk, and who would want to eat with you, anyway?

I get your position. You don’t want to appear to make a judgment call, you just want to report what is fact.

But it’s a fact that Mr. Bohn’s statement represents a racist stereotype of Mexicans. To wit: Mexicans steal hubcaps, so eating real Mexican food might make a white person want to steal hubcaps, too.

That’s not “racially charged language,” it’s a racist stereotype, no judgment call needed.

The Japanese constantly went into Korea, and took slaves, up to and during WWII, as well as the Phillipines, and other surrounding nations. The Mayans or the Aztecs slaved and slaughtered each other for sacrifices to gods that do not nor did not exist. The Africans slaved each other for thousands of years, and sold them to Mohammed until recently. Mohamed was a major slave trader. The Mongols went into China on a regular basis, slaving and slaughtering as they went. The natives here killed so many species into extinction, except the buffalo. They also slaved and killed each other . Raided each other’s territory, and if you were a Crow, you did not want to be caught in the Blackfoot territory, bad business. You seem to have missed the point. Neighboring tribes and cultural sets have tended to treat each other badly throughout human history. Trade and commerce, creating a positive-sum game, are the two factors that seem to force such groups to see each other as full humans and treat each other with standards of human decency.

Nobody steals hubcaps anymore. They are all plastic. Rex obviously needs to update his joke portfolio.
By the way during my short stint as a hub cap thief ( they were made out of stone back then) I had been eating fish sticks. Fish on Friday was an Irish Catholic thing. Stupid juice (Boones farm apple wine) was our fool fuel. Hub cap extraction was our Netflix.
Last I checked it is still ok to make jokes about the Irish, hillbillies and rednecks. That’s because most of the “jokes” are actually true stories. I am proud to be a part of an ethnic identity that can laugh at itself. We are becoming an endangered species.
The fact remains Rex has done and does a lot for the community. The Community includes people of different identities.

As a former Marine, Rex is a Brother in my book. An Apology for the slight was needed and given. It takes a true Man to apologize for doing wrong. Rex Apologized.

As a member of the Priesthood, I accept said apology. As an Elder of my Native American People (Eastern Cherokee), I accept said apology. As I am a part of a Military family who has served America since the Revolutionary War when we stood with General George Washington – I accept said Apology.

We need not use these slights as a catalyst to do harm to the community. Such Bias is commonly shown in thread comments as witnessed here. When we begin to segregate each other by mere appearances, then we are indeed in trouble. Attending today’s events where people from many Racial and Cultural backgrounds. To simply generalize people by their appearance and color of their skin is to fall in to error in itself.

There where Hispanic, Native American, Caucasian, Asian and other people of both color and nationalities attending. One merely walk through the crown and talk to people as I do. Judging from a few photos is an error in judgment.

Pray before you post a comment, the “Bias” in thine heart will be taken away and the Truth revealed. -M

Trying to avoid offending anyone in the current climate where as you point out, no one knows what is inoffensive anymore, I used the term, “gentlemen whose parents exhibited high levels of malanin,” in a comment on a competing news site.

I was berated for the, “sheer racism,” of my comment, so I explained my uncertainty regarding what is actually offensive to no one nowadays, and offered an even more obfuscatory definition: “melanocyte-rich individuals.”

For which I’ve been called so many names, I may just go home and cry.

My point being, what the hell was wrong with black and white? When people decide that every term used to describe them is offensive, even ones they originally came up with, what does that tell us about their feeling about themselves? And at what point are we going to stop feeling guilty for feelings beyond our control?

Check it out – the only universally accepted term used by black people to describe one another is, “nigger,” or, “niggah,” or, nigga,” or however they want to say it at the moment. But we’re not allowed to use that. Neither are we allowed to use black, or Negro, or colored, or African-American – it’s almost like they feel we should regard them as gods, so terrible that their name can never be spoken.

Hell, Kym – you’re a journalist, who keeps up on this shit, and you’re mystified. How in the hell are the rest of us supposed to keep up? Or better yet, why should we try to keep up? I feel like we’re being led around by the nose by a sadistic sociopath who just loves to make people feel like miserable failures for being unable to achieve impossible goals.

“You want to prove you’re not a racist? Never refer to us by anything remotely descriptive again!”

“But what shall we call you?”

“I don’t know! Figure it out!”

“How about (….)?”

“Okay! We’ll go with that!”

(Two months later): “That’s racist and insensitive.”

“What? It’s what you said to call you two months ago!”

“Too bad. Now you’re a jerk if you say that. Now we’re (…).”

“Ok. Anything to not appear racist.” (Tells a friend)

(Two months later, friend has black eye): “WTF? I thought that wasn’t racist?”

(Goes back to melanocyte-rich friend): “No, bro, you can’t call us that anymore. it’s racist and insensitive.”

“What?! I thought the last thing was?”

“No, bro – you gotta call us (…) now.”

And on and on and on…

I think you’ve hit the nail on the head. If anyone should be offended, it should be Mexicans. Yet white people are demanding not only an apology, but a public flogging, followed by a hanging, and drawing-and-quartering, with the body parts to be gibbeted for all to see.

The Mexican response in general seems to be, “Hey, hey! Good joke!” But their white defenders apparently think they are too stupid to know what’s funny, leading to a situation where you think a Mexican can’t laugh unless a white man tells him to, while at the same time, a Native American who is a Marine and a priest can’t accept an apology for his Mexican friends.

Pretty much leaves just whites calling the shots, and running the show. Pretty fucking patronizing, if you ask me, and way more racist than a hub-cap-stealing joke.

Your reasoning is whack.

So if my ancestors hung a black man from a tree decades ago & no one cared too much about then, that means it’d be ok, today?

If my dad taught me a Jewish Astray joke at the age of 6 and laughed. Does that mean I should share the same joke today, to another child, cause it was no biggie then, when he said it?

If my Uncle said in the 80’s, “All queers should be dragged into the street & shot!” While everyone around him laughed. Would you still think it’s ok to say and laugh along today?

Everyone can learn from their mistakes. If these topics are never addressed and we refuse to understand another’s point of view, cause it questions our own beliefs & actions, we only fall alone vs rise together!

While you are correct pointing out they are different, a simple stupid comment, can just as easily lead from one to the other!

And Bohn’s stupid comment led to what action at the Ingomar Club? That’s right, nothing! And it was not about a specific individual. That’s a long stretch to try and distance the 2.

Just cause Donham’s comment was more direct at an individual, does not mean a broad comment about a group, is invulnerable to causing harm on others.

For instance, are you aware Polish jokes originated from Nazi propaganda? They’re still retold today. Does that make them ok? And just cause nothing has happened yet, doesn’t mean it’s impossible. Just look at Everyone arguing on this thread. Now a little bit of humility never hurt anyone! Humble yourselves folks!

I’ll bet that 99.9% of the people who posted these comments has said worse over their lifetimes. They would not know what to say a racist remark is, if it rose up and smacked them right between their blind eyes.

Go Rex, I’m behind you all of the way, even though I can’t vote for you. I’ve lived among Hispanics and other Nationalities all of my life and all of them has said a lot of off colored remarks, so what? Doesn’t hurt me what so ever. The ones who disagrees with his remarks are probably half witted anyway.

The part that I think is funny is anytime I’ve overheard someone make a racist white joke and I come back with there ethnicity’s joke they get offended some people need to learn to take what they give not everyone is racist do people get pissed off at the comedians that make racial joke no they don’t so give the man a break he’s done a lot for the community and will continue if allowed to do so

White folks arent the most racist any longer. The traditional minorities here in California are! Holding all white people responsible for historical injustice is racist!

Given that there are at most 25 or so identifiably caucasian adults in the photos, there is no evidence of a statistical anomaly. Especially if you consider that the Census figures include the HSU in-migrants and the reservations who are not in the First District.

The null hypothesis is intact whether you regard the small sample as representing Humboldt County or the First District in particular.

Don’t take the mix that is heavily skewed towards the composition of the HSU student body, or more particularly towards an ideological subset of the student body, that usually shows up in front of the courthouse as representative of Humboldt County.

I don’t have any problem with Rex’s comments, but I do have a problem with the noise coming from the whitehouse and other Republicans about how bad Mexicans are. They are great people from a hurting country. I would welcome more of them here to my construction company, they are the best workers out there, and good people all around in my experience. Give away your things to these migrants, including your home, because that’s what your pushing on the rest of us with people taking up housing raising costs, using infrastructure without paying for it, and getting hand outs on the back of workers. Wow, this has been fun. Rex’s supporters are good at gymnastics, the mental sort but you can’t turn sow to silk.

Rex is a pretty typical Humboldt Racist. It’s complicated. But, we should be able to recognize it when we see it. He should not have made that joke. At home, at a fundraiser, with a goat, on a boat. He should not have said it, and he should not be our supervisor. But, he did and he will be. One more term Rex. And, here is the complicated part, Rex has done good things. He works hard. He loves his family. But, like so many folks like him, he likes to make jokes, he makes them without thinking. But, he is Rex. Like so many men like him, he doesn’t think it matters and he will be given a pass. That’s the way we do things around here. But, slowly things are changing. We don’t have to accept someone who doesn’t have the good sense to think before he speaks. Maybe that is going to be the case this time. McCloskey has some good ideas, I don’t know anything about his past. I do know that he seems to accept that this is not his time. I wish that Rex and the supporters showing up here would do the same thing.

But keep pushing a wash up against Rex and he’ll be keeping office. Seriously, you people are against Rex cause of a joke, not because he’s violated ethics and conflict of interest laws, or used his position to skirt justice for his bear spraying son who he pulled a permit for with honeydew farms, or that he is just plain unintelligent and shouldn’t be making decisions affecting us? Nope grab onto something trival like a joke which makes the Democrat party a joke for trying this lame tactic.

I note that the signs supporting ol’ Rex are all professionally printed. Somebody put some money into as “spontaneous” demonstration of support. Makes it look a little orchestrated. Show of public support, or campaign event? Now I’m wondering whether those spontaneous supporters just showed up, or if, like Trump “supporters” they were casted and paid to be there.

No where in this article does it say it was a “spontaneous ” demonstration of support. It was planned last week I believe. As far racism and prejudice unfortunately it is practiced world wide. In Mexico the cast system is still unfortunately practiced with the Native Americans being unfairly treated. In Costa Rica the Native Americans and Nicaraguan workers are looked down upon. In Africa the South Africans look down upon the Swazis. Rex made a boneheaded comment and he has apologized.

This is the wrong debate to be having. Bohn has impoverished the county with his policies along with 3 or the other 4 supervisors. His son committed a home invasion, macing kids and a so on, and was never charged. Rather he has been given cannabis permits galore, while Rex goes after his competitors with steep fines to drive them from their homes. These are the kind of issues we should be discussing. Nearly a 10% drop in sales for the entire county with draconian regulations on all kinds of matters that Rex votes for (and they say Democrats are bad on regs) and worse on the horizon. Choose your battles.

That said, is anyone running against him?

When Humboldt County stops electing self promoting and self-serving officials, like Estelle Fennel and Rex Bohn, things may begin to improve.

If you only elect ignorant hicks, racists and the wealthy landowners, please don’t complain about your County Government.

Also, some of you people appear to be willing to argue with anybody, or with a tree stump, if you can’t find a person to engage in argument. I sincerely hope you find something else to do, but if you don’t, maybe you should run for supervisor, against Rex…

Good God people, the joke was not racist or bigoted, it was simply stereotypic and there’s a reason races have stereotypes. Just like a lot of rednecks like barbecue and guns, a lot of black people like fried chicken and okra, I like all of it except okra, it’s just slimy and nasty and there’s nothing racist about it..
