[UPDATE 2:59 p.m.] Granola Bar Wrappers Found This Morning in Search Match With Ones in Family Home
“One of the searchers found a couple of granola bar wrappers and the mother was able to confirm that she had just bought that brand and style of bars” recently, said Lt. Mike Fridley of the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department
. “This is a likely clue that helps the searchers focus on that area. It gives us a direction.” He also said that they had located what might have been an attempted fire pit with fresh branches.
In addition, Fridley explained there are multiple search teams in the area including four with dogs and a Coast Guard helicopter. They will fly until they run low on gas and then the National Guard helicopter should be available at that time.
“We have a drone coming,” he said.
And every team and the route they’ve searched is being recorded.
“Each search team has a tracker that operates over satellite,” Fridley explained.
Below is a video by Mark McKenna describing how the tracker helps the searchers.
Lt. Fridley said that the parents are both searching. He said, “The dad has been searching all night long.” The mother who has another child is out again searching today.
He explained that while there is hope with the wrappers, they are still concerned. He pointed out, “The weather is cold. We’re worried about hypothermia…They are young girls and I’m sure they are scared.”
He also said, “We have our criminal investigations crew in case this goes a different direction.” He said at this point there is no indication of foul play. But, he said, law enforcement doesn’t want assumptions to keep them from being ready in any eventuality.
“We’re following the clues,” Lt. Fridley explained.
If anyone has any information, a public tip line has been established at (707) 441-5000.

Praying for these precious babies and thier family…Praying for all the ones working in this search…
Great update, impressive response.
Forgive if i missed it, is Lt. Fridley with mcso or hcso?
Hopeful sign, ive seen lots of kids hide in old redwood stumps/holes in base of trees. They do feel very safe! They could be near water and not able to hear searchers.
Whatever may be, hoping they are found very soon!!!!
Thank you to all agencies and volunteers, we are so blessed to have you!!!!
I think Lt. Fridley is with HCSO.
You are right. My apologies. I’ve fixed that in the article now.
The Humboldt community would love to help search for these girls, if it wouldn’t hinder officials. Please let us know if there is any way we can be of assistance!
For those wanting to help, perhaps bringing hot beverages and yummy food to those searching that challenging terrain would be good.
Maybe check with those folks first but ive rarely seen an intense situation in the rain that a hot drink&good food couldnt help.
Or if you know search&rescue folks who need childcare or dinner bought for them to pick up, or brought for their family, after a long day of volunteering .
Sometimes the best thing we can do is support the people trained for these intense scenarios no matter how badly we too want to be out searching.
I agree. I want to be there also but I live so far away.
Any more news, Kym? I’m stressed out.
This is the latest. https://kymkemp.com/2019/03/02/private-drone-almost-caused-a-serious-incident-with-search-helicopter-looking-for-leia-and-caroline/
Unfortunately, no good news yet.
We still haven’t found them keep praying no hard signs of them yet
Thank you for being there helping.
Kym, this might be a good time to mention the various ways to donate to So. Hum Search & Rescue. PayPal & an address for those of us who still write checks. Thank you!
You can go into the Community Credit Union and donate there. Other than that, try asking them on their Facebook page what works. https://www.facebook.com/Southern-Humboldt-County-Technical-Rescue-Team-197163536719/
Also the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue has been there and they are all volunteers, too. https://www.facebook.com/humboldtsar/
Please look near the water. They will be thirsty and they will go for a drink. The older one is smart and will be trying really hard to be the adult.
2am just got home from the ranch. there are rumors of voices in the woods from them. And there are trucks and locals and one of the best kids out there looking now. I could almost garentee they will be found if this is true. Hope it’s not to late. Find them Austin.
I hope you are right
If you can, put a speaker on the drone and broad cast instructions to HUG A TREE or go to an open space area and STAY there.
As a mom i cannot imagine the state of mind the parents are in right now. I pray for these beautiful little spirits to be found in good shape. Our community is pulling together as we do in these terrible instances. I love where i live and thank all the support from all the services and the volunteers for helping and Kym for keeping us informed.
Times standard said they are found , and well!
