In a Pandemic, Food for People Provides the Hungry With Fresh Produce But Worries About a Second Spike in Need

Yesterday morning, like a traveling circus unpacking, volunteers bustled about spreading a white popup tent in the alley next to 307 West 14th Street in Eureka and stacking boxes for another Food for People Giveaway.

“This was a soft opening in the alley way behind our old building,” explained Carly Robbins, Food for People’s Development Director. “It doesn’t have parking space so we didn’t advertise it widely. We just put it out on our website.” She said that they are looking for a bigger place for future events.

When the economy shutdown so people could shelter-in-place, Food for People had to step up their services and pivot quickly from their old model to adapt to handing out supplies in a manner wouldn’t spread COVID-19 to people already financially damaged by the pandemic.

Over 12,000 unemployment claims were filed in March and April alone and, according to the United States Census Bureau, 20.8% of Humboldt County residents already lived in poverty.

A tidal wave of people needed help and the non-profit had to find ways to help. Gloves, masks, and prepackaged produce became the new model instead of free produce markets that allowed people to browse fresh fruits and vegetables for what they needed.

Robbins said that yesterday’s event was successful. “All told [traffic] was pretty constant,” she explained. “We maybe one pallet of boxes left at the end. Arcata House and another partner are going to pick up what they need…We saw 175 cars that served 653 individuals.”

Two types of produce boxes were available-- One is from the USDA Farmers to Family, the other was prepared by California Association of Food Banks. Plus there was an additional bag of produce from Donate Don’t Dump.

Overall, Robbins said that the non-profit is being able to provide the necessary food for the people in the community. “There was a whole bunch of need right when shelter-in-place started,” she told us. But government support kicked in and helped provide the basics. “People got that stimulus check. People got unemployment checks. We are seeing a little less need in the community…Things are starting to calm down a bit. ”

However, Robbins said, “Everyone is afraid of what is going to happen if the unemployment benefits don’t stay at the same at the same level.” In addition, disease models indicate that the first wave of COVID-19 isn’t over. “We’re anticipating a second spike come fall,” she said. “A lot of the economy is going to take some time to catch back up.”

So, she explained that Food for People is trying to plan ahead. “Just being prepared for that extra need is important,” she told us. In addition, the organization is trying to recover from having to rebuild after a spill damaged their building in early March.

If anyone would like to give financial donations, from now through July 15, Craig Hansen Insurance Service will match all donations, doubling their impact. Click here to donate.

In addition, there are many opportunities for volunteers to help throughout the County also. Click here to fill out a form to find out where you might be a good fit.

Shit starts getting real for people in August. It’ll be interesting to see what happens when the benefits run out for the year.
We should expect a several-day blackout late September/early October, btw.

“We are grateful to the Washington Post, the New York Times, Time Magazine and other great publications whose directors have attended our meetings and respected their promises of discretion for almost 40 years……It would have been impossible for us to develop our plan for the world if we had been subjected to the lights of publicity during those years. But, the world is more sophisticated and prepared to march towards a world government. The supernational sovereignty of an intellectual elite and world bankers is surely preferable to the national autodetermination practiced in past centuries.”

I pulled it from here:
https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/288636-we-are-grateful-to-the-washington-post-the-new-york

“For more than a century ideological extremists at either end of the political spectrum have seized upon well-publicized incidents such as my encounter with Castro to attack the Rockefeller family for the inordinate influence they claim we wield over American political and economic institutions. Some even believe we are part of a secret cabal working against the best interests of the United States, characterizing my family and me as ‘internationalists’ and of conspiring with others around the world to build a more integrated global political and economic structure–one world, if you will. If that’s the charge, I stand guilty, and I am proud of it.”

Wikiquote says this on that particular quote:
“Purported remarks at a Bilderberg Group meeting in Baden-Baden, Germany in June 1991, as quoted in Programming, Pitfalls and Puppy-Dog Tales (1993) by Gyeorgos C. Hatonn, p. 65 and various nationalist tracts. The ultimate source for the quotation (i.e. the person who passed it on to the public) is never identified.”

The second quote was from his memoirs. The first is quoted from a bilderberg address.

Well… absence of proof is not proof of absence. It is interesting that wikiquote gives a source without a refutation. Apparently there has not been anyone with authority to disavow the quote.

While I enjoy conspiracy theories I don’t let presumption get in the way of facts and rationale.

With regards to the “New World Order” conspiracy I look at it this way:

In a world that has become smaller and smaller through communication technology there is a logical extrapolation that the people of earth have a compelling interest in having a global government that protects their interests. Given the general orientation of people towards economy it makes sense that people from the mercantile class would be the forerunners in creating a global government before they find themselves in a situation of subjugation to popular movements that they have no control. It doesn’t take a great imagination to see that the bankers of the world have a intrest in creating a global stability that underpins their motives.

Connie, shouldn’t be any blackouts along the coast anymore unless Fire season is bad there. The PGE powerplant at King Salmon has been adjusted to provide local power in blackouts due to fire conditions inland..

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if the refrigerated containers donated to use for storage of dead bodies be converted to storage of free food? That’s the planet I want to live on!
