[UPDATE Friday] Helicopter Needed to Fly Patient to Out of Area Hospital After Major Injury Accident on Hwy 96 Yesterday

A Reach medivac helicopter, Hoopa ambulance, a Willow Creek Fire truck and a California Highway Patrol vehicle were captured yesterday about 5:40 p.m. by the Caltrans Berry Summit Traffic Camera.
At approximately 4:35 p.m. yesterday, two vehicles collided at the intersection of Hwy 96 and Little Moon Lane.
“One vehicle was turning onto Little Moon Lane..,” said Hoopa Tribal Police Chief Robert Kane, Jr. “The other was traveling northbound on 96…One patient was flown out by helicopter…One taken by ambulance.”
The California Highway Patrol reports this was a major injury accident.
UPDATE Friday: According to CHP Officer Read, the two vehicles collided when a 2018 Chevy Suburban was turning from southbound lane onto Little Moon Lane and a 2000 Honda Civic was headed northbound. The two hit head on. At this time, Officer Read said he does not know if fault has been assigned or who was injured.

Well, that’s pretty vague. Was the vehicle turning onto Little Moon southbound and turned in front of the northbound vehicle? Or was the one turning slowing down and got smacked from behind because the other guy didn’t slow down?
If it was bad enough to need a helicopter, I’m guessing the first one.
But why Berry Summit? There’s places (even an airport) in Hoopa, and there’s another airstrip in Willow Creek.
You’re correct Adam, Berry Summit just doesn’t make sense for all the reasons you stated.
Berry Summit traditionally is the place where injuries in Hoopa are picked up. I don’t know why but I’ve reported at least three that I can think of.
The only thing that makes sense is if it is going to take the helicopter over a half hour to get there, they might as well start moving closer, both ambulance and helicopter arriving at the same time at Berry Summit.
Except that usually, I believe, the helicopter flies the injured to Mercy not St. Joe’s.
