Governor Newsom Announces That California Workers Receiving Unemployment Will Get an Extra $600 on Top of Weekly Sum

California Governor sealPress release from the Governor Newsom’s Office:

Governor Gavin Newsom today announced that starting this Sunday, California workers who are receiving unemployment benefits will begin receiving an extra $600 on top of their weekly amount, as part of the new Pandemic Additional Compensation (PAC) initiated by the CARES Act. This comes as record numbers of unemployment claims are being filed on a weekly basis in the state.

This is an important benefit that will help individual Californians and our small businesses, especially those that are struggling economically as a result of COVID-19.

“Many Californians are feeling the effects of this pandemic, and this added benefit is very important to our workers so they have needed resources during this difficult time,” said Governor Newsom.

In the last four weeks, California has processed about 2.3 million unemployment insurance claims, which is more than the total number of claims filed in 2019. Just for the week ending on Saturday, April 4, 2020, the California Employment Development Department (EDD) processed 925,450 claims, which is a 2,418% increase over the same week last year.

Additionally, the EDD paid a total of nearly $684.3 million in unemployment benefits to Californians in need in the last four weeks, supporting families and their local economies.

For more information on how to apply for unemployment insurance benefits and what claimants need to know about these new $600 additional payments, visit the EDD website.

“I want to thank both our federal partners, as well as everyone in our Labor Agency and the staff in the Employment Development Department, who are working around the clock to ensure California workers have the resources they need to get through this difficult time,” added Governor Newsom.

Ah, you do realize this is a federal pro gram passed by Congress and signed into law by Donald Trump. The Governor didn’t pull this out of the thin air. So if you don’t like it …there ya go. Call the White House .

That same Act that was voted for unanimously in the House and Senate I am positive EVERYBODY read the 800 plus pages. Have to love the B.S. we now see that we just dropped $450 Billion on the Federal Reserve with no restrictions or oversight. Keep marching, voting then go and depart. Nothing to see here except grand theft.

Most people think
Great God will come from the sky
Take away everything
And make-a everybody feel high
But if you know what life is worth
You will look for yours on earth

or just keep waiting for that check..

Money, it’s a crime
Share it fairly, but don’t take a slice of my pie
Money, so they say
Is the root of all evil today
But if you ask for a rise, it’s no surprise
That they’re giving none away

… well, maybe they’re giving some away but they’re taking a whole lot more.

“In the past four weeks, California has processed 2.3 million unemployment claims” if each California gets an extra $600 that boils down to 1.4 billion per week just for Ca. The United States doesn’t have the $, all they can do is just print the money………buckle up.

Looks like he’s saying that the $600 will start this coming Sunday for those UIB recipients not that it’s new. The states haven’t received their money yet for these additional funds so I think he’s saying it’s coming from California BEFORE we receive federal funds. Some other states are doing this as well.

I think all those socialism haters and Bernie and Yang haters should be excluded from recieving these checks. Because guess what. . This is socialism.

That being said I have a 1 year old son, who doesnt even understand the financial damage this shits going to cause him in the future. With anything in life balance is the key. I feel like these payments and stimulus packages are a huge unbalancing act that will swing things way out of balance for many years to come.

” I feel like these payments and stimulus packages are a huge unbalancing act that will swing things way out of balance for many years to come.” … and that is the result of socialism.

I will not be excepting this issuance of debt from the Federal Government.

So what is the incentive to work if I’m going to make more on unemployment– socialism at its finest!
The rich stay rich and the rest of us just become more and more dependent on the government.

So a person who worked part time and has earned around $200 a week in unemployment will now receive $800? Fuck no they’re not going to go back to work when they’re “allowed”. I don’t think this is a good idea Yogi, but the Ranger sure likes it. If you can’t get socialism through the ballot box then force business to close for safety and then take over for the sake of the ”non” working class.

I’ve got a daughter who who works full time in the wine industry. She has 3 young daughters. There is no school, no daycare and no help with the girls in sight. She has lost 80% of her income and has filed for unemployment under reduced hours. She will not qualify for additional money from the Feds. I’m pretty sure your part time worker scenario won’t get much.

All people who are on unemployment, full time, part time, partially unemployed, will get the extra $600/week. Yes, lower paid employees may get more than they typically earn working, in some cases almost double if they don’t even earn $600/week at their regular rate. But, the employee must be ready, willing and able to return to work. So if the employer has work for them and they are not taking it they shouldn’t qualify for unemployment anymore. That is the difference. The employer must tell their employee they have reduced work or no work for unemployment to kick in, but the worker must take the work that is available.

So if I made 15 dollars an hour that is 600 a week.

And now if I was laid off your gonna give me unemployment of 400 dollars a week PLUS a bonus 600 more weekly?

Wow so the average worker just went from making 600 weekly to 1000 weekly with this nonsense

Sounds like everyone will now want to be laid off.

And the government giving this out is bankrupt so they will print more money which is just robbing it from all the rest of us in the form of inflation

I cant reccomend revolution because that’s against the law to reccomend .

But you guys, all of us, are screwed due to these current handouts

Take the government money stay at home watch the bill of rights and constitution burn stay with your Netflix idiot zombies

Now imagine you make that same minimum wage at an “essential” job (like grocery checker). You’re still making the same $600 per week but your exposure/risk are very high. Meanwhile, a person who has a very similar “nonessential” job (like clerk @ the smoke shop) gets a 66% raise to stay home.

That seems perfectly logical and fair.

Fact check:
California unemployment benefit calculator shows someone making $15/hr fulltime (40 hours/week) would receive $270 week. Maximum benefit is $450/week if you made $25 hr or more.

The $600/week federal subsidy only lasts until July 31, 2020.

Don’t think that’s unreasonable if you care about getting our economy going again. Have some empathy for those who have just lost their ability to work and pay for essentials. I wouldn’t want to be in their shoes.
