Juvenile Heard Calling for Help Near Myers Flat Last Night; Sheriff’s Office Request Information From Community

Information provided the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office:

icon Humboldt COunty Sheriff's OfficeLast night, at approximately 11:15 p.m., the Sheriff’s Emergency Communications Center received the report of a possible juvenile in the South Fork Eel River near Boy Scout Road in Myers Flat.

The reporting party told deputies that he heard something outside and exited his residence. While he was outside, he thought he heard a young male voice screaming for help in the river. He told deputies that he called back to the voice and heard a reply. However, as the reporting party attempted to go down to the river to help, he heard the voice fade away. A second party in the residence confirmed also hearing the voice, which sounded like a male juvenile.

Deputies and units from Meyers Flat Fire and Cal Fire searched the surrounding area and the river, and did not locate any signs or evidence of anyone in or near the river. Units also canvased the area along the river contacting residents in regards to any missing persons. There were no persons from the surrounding area determined missing at the time.

If anyone heard something similar during this time or has any information related to this incident, please call our office at (707) 445-7251.

the Myers flat fire department is a joke. the fire chief assaults his community members and would never want them to respond to a serious emergency last night they broke procedure and jeopardize the search by not allowing the deputies to respond first.

Concerned Myers flat citizen, you’re the joke. You really expect someone to initiate a full on search and rescue based on “hearing a voice calling for help” with no other information. That’s not how shit works.

Who ever was in charge making the orders to disobey a staging request is the joke, not all of them, which means you’re supposed to be quiet and stage. When a crew heads in without acknowledging a staging request there should be someone responsible for that. I meant to say jeopardize the situation, not a search and rescue, by not allowing the deputies to respond first and clear it. Scanner info was clear

They should have established an IC, then a FOB. Fire stays in the cold zone except for the firefighter sandwich that moves to the FOB! Do the Dew!

Hearing a voice, especially when verified by a second individual, should at the very least initiate further investigations. I have dealt with this personally, in a traumatic accident. This attitude can cost someone their life. The police who refused to call out or look, based on someone who heard someone calling for help, caused my child who was missing(I had informed the police of this and the road he was last seen on,but they did not report it to on call officers) to lay there broken and in severe pain for several more hours.

Remember Truth don’t ever call for help because no one will come. Not responding to that call is stupid. Even if it was a prank it deserves some attention.

I heard the town siren and then the truck rumbled past my house. I hoped none of my neighbors were in danger. I am very very grateful to the few guys who take on this task and get up in the middle of the night to help their neighbors.
If you are critical of this VOLUNTEER organization, I suggest you get off your self righteous ass and join.

Im confused by the reports in this comment section.
Did the fire departments look for a person in the river? Did they permit others to look?
Is someone being chastised for looking before help arrived?
Why would i wait for 20 minutes for others to arrive befire i walked down to thw river in my backyard to help a child?

Trust me, the last thing you want to do is rely on the sheriff’s department to find somebody. You’ll be waiting a long time. Everybody in this community should be nothing but grateful for the volunteers. I know me my wife and our two daughters are. If you ever know of somebody who might be missing do yourself a favor, do not call the sheriff, call the Tactical search and rescue team.

Duly noted, thanks THC. Give those young ones another hug for us all and those Piercy boys another round on the house.

When you come up missing, I am going to call the Sheriff’s Department. I don’t think you are worth looking for. Give them a break please. Look how they responded to the missing sisters in Benbow, all hands on deck. Were you helping to look, nope did not think so.

I hope whoever it was is safe and sound. What an awful feeling of helplessness that must have been. Hopefully it was just the sound currents from a neighboring voice yelling at their sibling or cat. Sounds on the wind can be disturbing at times, and this might be one of those times. At least we can always hope.

I asked friends and they said they were never asked if they lost a kid. I’m also assuming a parent would say something by now. Also, how can anyone check a half mile of river front at midnight and truly see if somewhere someone was washed in. Also , people are by that river every day., so the whole river front should have evidence that people were next to the river. On a side note, unless you know the individual and are saying something about someone specific, never talk bad about firefighters. They literally only help and not themselves.

Neighboring town – we have a firefighter on our block. More than once, I have heard him drive out rather rapidly in the wee small hours of the morning. I always hope and pray that he and his fellow firefighters return home safe and sound and that they were able to put out the fire, rescue the injured, etc. Thanks, guys.

Now, when someone reported seeing a monkey in a diaper, 7 patrol cars and animal control SEARCHED the woods. So bad call on whoever is in charge. I think this was way more legit then a damn monkey
