Most people just step right out into the street without looking. In Arcata they do it with a sense of pride and some smugness. In eureka it’s just plain clueless old folks or pilled out [edit] who were born with a low IQ. Nothing you can do about that.

It looks like that’s what happened here. Not in the crosswalk. Wearing dark clothes on a dark and stormy night. Figuring they would see her and stop?

I was there. I saw the pedestrian in the crosswalk. Right where she was supposed to walk. Have a little respect please.

I wish drivers would slow down. I hope she is okay.

“Smugness”. Yeah. I wonder if you know what ‘irony’ means?

What does clueless “old folks” have to do with anything? You will be one some day. Don’t play in the street!

That area has a stop sign between every block and every intersection, how is it possible to get up enough speed to hit somebody?

There are lots of students around there, for some it’s their first time away from home, some are high school students, be careful.

So many drivers see pedestrians waiting to cross (at a marked or unmarked crosswalk), yet they will not yield because they cannot be bothered to slow down or stop for a few seconds… Try putting yourself in the shoes of the other person out in the elements trying to get to a warm and dry destination.

Dress to be seen. Sometimes, like at night, drivers don’t see you until they’re quite close.

As a child I was taught to look both ways before crossing the street.
Do patents not teach their children?
Drive carefully.

Making a better environment for cars should be priority, making people drive instead of walking is safer for everyone.

Outlawing walking in Arcata should be on the ballot, as well as a dress code that includes hair length and a complete ban on everything tye dye, in fact tye dye should be made a felony with life long registration.

Everyday I drive thru Arcata. Everyday there is at least, at least, on person walking out from behind a car looking at their phone with ear buds in. 50% of the time they look up after the fact with a look of righteousness. They are damn lucky I never take my eyes off the road, and damn lucky I like my car.

Is there anyone reading this that has any real news about whether the victim recovered?

I spoke with the responding officer Monday and he told me that the victim is doing fine. I’m taking him at his word.
