Lady Cubs’ Soccer Falls to McKinleyville 3-2, Take Forfeit Vs. Eureka
On Wednesday McKinleyville took advantage of poor defensive communication early in the game and scored two quick goals within the first ten minutes. The Lady Cubs answered with numerous attacks, but could not finish and the halftime score stood at 2-0.
Early in the second half, Lady Cub goalie sophomore Paloma Avilez came out of the penalty box to play a loose ball with her feet. Her kick was quickly deflected and a Mack player got her foot on it and scored from 35 yards out into an empty goal, making the score 3-0.
South Fork continued to attack and about half way through the second half, senior striker Olivia Baffert sent a long cross from right to left across the face of goal and into the run of junior winger Regina Salomon, who poked it in for her second goal of the season.
Five minutes later, junior striker Kylie Messenger broke through Mack’s back line and when the keeper came out to make the save, Messenger was able to keep the ball and send it toward the open goal. Baffert tapped it in for the score, her 8th goal of the season.
This week the Cubs travel to Arcata on Wednesday for a 5:30 pm kick-off and to Del Norte on Saturday for a 1 pm kick-off. This is the first time the Cubs have played Arcata this year. The Lady Cubs tied Del Norte back on September 20, 1-1. Their record is now 4-8-2 overall, and 2-3-1 against small schools. They have two remaining must-win games against small schools to earn a berth in the North Coast Section play-offs. They will travel to Tomales on October 16 and to Roseland Collegiate prep on October 23.
