Driver Injured After Vehicle Reportedly Rolls 60 Feet Down Steep Highway 299 Embankment
Emergency crews responded to a solo-vehicle crash on Highway 299 near mile marker 38 west of Willow Creek in Humboldt County shortly after 9 a.m. today after an iPhone crash alert indicated a collision had occurred.
According to the California Highway Patrol Traffic Incident Information Page, the initial alert came in at approximately 9:05 a.m. Later information indicated that a vehicle had rolled over and that the occupant was injured and trapped inside.
Responders initially had difficulty locating the crash. At 9:21 a.m., location information from a RapidSOS caller ping placed the vehicle near mile marker 38, off the westbound side of the highway, with a reported 95 percent accuracy.
By 9:42 a.m., a CHP unit had located the vehicle and advised fire personnel of its location. A CHP officer who reached the vehicle reported at 10 a.m. that the occupant was awake, while fire personnel were attempting an extraction.
CHP later described the vehicle as a Toyota RAV4 with major rollover damage approximately 60 feet down a steep embankment. A tow truck was requested at approximately 10:21 a.m.
At this point we do not know the extent of injuries to the driver.
