A Loleta man was taken into custody Thursday afternoon after deputies say he was seen brandishing a machete and threatening people near Bowie Road, according to the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were dispatched to the 200 block of Bowie Road just before 3 p.m. after reports of a man running through the area with a machete. By the time they arrived, the suspect was gone. Witnesses told deputies he had fled to a residence on Carroll Road.

When deputies located him there, the man ran. A sheriff’s K9 was deployed and took the suspect down. He was taken into custody, and medical personnel were called to the scene to treat a bite wound to the buttocks region. He was transported to a local hospital in handcuffs for treatment.

The suspect was identified as Cody Lee Meyers, 39, of Loleta. No charges had been formally announced as of Thursday afternoon. The sheriff’s office said a full press release would follow Friday morning.

No injuries to deputies or bystanders were reported.

This report is based on scanner traffic and a statement from HCSO Public Information Officer Erin Inskip. Additional details are expected in a formal release Friday morning.
