Emergency responders were dispatched Monday afternoon to a remote stretch of the Humboldt County coast after a text message to the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office reported an injured hiker in need of medical assistance near the Lost Coast Trail.

According to a press release from the U.S. Coast Guard, at approximately 12:15 p.m., Coast Guard Sector Humboldt Bay watch standers received a request from CAL FIRE to transport a hiker with a reported broken leg from the Lost Coast Trail near Cape Mendocino.

Due to the remote terrain, Southern Humboldt Technical Rescue, CAL FIRE, Petrolia Fire, and City Ambulance were all requested to respond. Dispatch later advised that both Reach air ambulance and a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter were responding to the incident.

According to the press release, Sector Humboldt Bay launched an Air Station Humboldt Bay MH-65 Dolphin helicopter aircrew, which hoisted the injured hiker from the remote section of the trail (scanner traffic indicated it was about five and a half miles south of the Mattole Beach.

Radio traffic indicated Reach 35 was cancelled after the Coast Guard helicopter took over the transport. The Coast Guard said the aircrew transported the hiker and her husband to St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka for further care.

The condition of the hiker has not been released.
