[UPDATE 8 p.m.] Crash on Highway 101 Near Indianola Cutoff Slows Traffic This Morning

traffic accidentA head-on traffic collision was reported around 7:51 a.m. on southbound U.S. Highway 101 just south of the Indianola Cutoff, according to the California Highway Patrol Traffic Incident Information Page.

First reports to the CHP indicated a crash involving a white GMC pickup truck and a SUV. One report from the scene suggested the pickup may have crossed lanes from the emergency shoulder, leading to the collision.

Emergency responders, including fire personnel, arrived on scene shortly after the crash was reported. At least one lane was temporarily closed as crews worked to manage the scene and assess those involved. By about 8:09 a.m., the GMC pickup had been moved out of the roadway, allowing traffic to pass, though one lane remained blocked for a period.

Early reports indicated that those involved may not have received serious injuries.

Tow services were requested for at least one vehicle, while another—the Buick SUV—was reported to be drivable.

Traffic was impacted in the area for about a half hour before lanes began reopening.

UPDATE 8 p.m.: We spoke to California Highway Patrol Officer Jason Esselman who told us that the first reports of a headon crash were incorrect. He said that a vehicle hit the back of a pickup.

Gotta wonder how the pickup got turned around.

I’m glad no one was hurt. You can blame the nanny state for the seat belts, crumple zone, and air bags.

Wording on article is bad. It was a rear end collision. Front of truck hit the back of the silver Buick suv.

Meanwhile 1: The Indianola cutoff remains incomplete for 6 months.

CalTrans somehow can’t finish the (relatively) minor construction for the northbound 101 entry/exits.

Meanwhile 2: I really have no idea about the management of CalTrans.

Caltrans estimates the project will be complete in 2026, though this is subject to change with conditions.

Go WTF figure.

The north coast caltrans projects always seem to be slow tracked regardless of the safety needs. Indianola has taken many years more than necessary. If you’re expecting an answer about it from our state senator Mike McGuire, dont bother. He’s too busy trying to get elected to Congress so he can retire.

Cal Trans is a financial suck for money. They repair stupid stuff (properly put: they make unnecessary ‘repairs’ and initiate unnecessary projects) just to justify their BLOATED budget.

I may have a guess…
When building the approaches, Caltrans engineers placed huge amounts of fill or overburden to compact the soil I presume.
Due to the constraints of the bay on one side, and the highway on the other, they were precluded from using earth as overburden.
I noticed an excavator re-stacking the prodigious pile of K-rail and surmise that …
Fill in the blank.

I was traveling in the right lane. The wreck was a rear-end collision, not a “head-on” since two cars did not collide with two front ends. The reason for this accident was the GR Sundberg oversized semi merging from a full stop in the emergency shoulder to the right lane, then block both lanes as he got into the left lane. Everyone slowed down in the right but left lane was barely able to avoid the semi. We all came to a stop. The silver SUV avoided the GRS semi, but the GMC pick-up truck slammed into the back of the SUV.

Seriously thank you so much for posting this! My partner was the driver of the truck this morning, he hit his face on the steering wheel kinda hard and was struggling to piece together what actually happened at the scene. So glad everyone’s okay. (He is too now just a real busted nose)
