Fortuna’s Hot Brew Back Open After One-Day Shutdown Over Rodent Activity

DHHS DEH logo inset with rodentHot Brew, a popular eatery located at 904 S. Fortuna Boulevard, was temporarily closed by Humboldt County’s Division of Environmental Health after inspectors found widespread evidence of rodent activity during a complaint investigation on March 26, 2026.

The inspection, conducted in response to a complaint case, documented rodent droppings on shelves and floors throughout the kitchen, front counter areas, and front storage room, county documents revealed. Inspectors also found that rodents had chewed into two loaves of bread on the bread rack. The most significant findings came from a back storage hallway and area — referred to in the report as the “graveyard” — where inspectors characterized the rodent droppings as extensive, particularly under and around equipment.

Citing California Health & Safety Code Section 114310, the county determined the conditions constituted an imminent health hazard and immediately suspended the facility’s retail food permit. The permit holder, Cherie Anaya, was informed that she had the right to request a hearing in writing within 15 calendar days.

To earn reinstatement, Hot Brew was required to contract a licensed pest control service for at least bi-weekly visits, thoroughly clean and sanitize all food storage and service areas affected by droppings, store all food items in rodent-proof containers at the close of each business day, cover and protect all dishes, utensils, and food equipment at closing, clean and sanitize all work surfaces before beginning operations each day, and identify and seal all vermin entry points.

A reinspection on March 27, 2026 — just one day later — found that critical food contact surfaces, food storage areas, food handling and prep zones, warewashing stations, and dish and utensil storage areas had been cleaned and sanitized, and showed no signs of ongoing rodent activity. The facility’s permit was reinstated on that date, though inspectors noted that some rodent droppings were still observed on floors in the dishroom, kitchen, and server’s station at the start of the reinspection. Those areas were addressed by the time the report was written.

The reinstatement came with several ongoing conditions, including mandatory bi-weekly licensed pest control service, rodent-proof food storage, daily surface sanitation, and regular reporting of pest control service results to the county. A follow-up inspection was scheduled for on or after April 1, 2026.

Additionally, the county identified five items that must be completed within 30 days as conditions of continued operation: cleaning and sanitizing remaining floor locations where droppings were observed, performing a deep cleaning of floors, walls, and equipment in the kitchen and dish room, having a qualified HVAC contractor perform an air balance test on the hood and make corrections, removing all unused equipment and materials from the facility, and organizing all stored items to facilitate ongoing cleaning and pest monitoring.

It’s going to be while before many people are comfortable returning, if at all. It’s a shame that one of the few fortuna (or Humboldt) restaurants that isn’t owned by a local(ish) monopoly with mediocre food had to deal with this.

Never been to Hot Brew and that will remain the case in perpetuity.
Most disgusting part of this ugly tale: the people working there. They knew of the disgusting environment that surrounded them day in and day out and chose to simply keep on truckin’ and keep the cash coming in – public health be damned. Complete losers.

Bosses resent being told they are not abiding by safe serve guidelines. Hence, the “complaint” could have very well come from staff sick of the filth.

This was a disturbing article. A very popular place with good food. This may affect the bottom line for a bit but will bounce back. Glad it was addressed and for the right reasons. Health. I would imagine others knew too but chose to use duct tape. Maybe just maybe was brought up to owner and not addressed so someone took matters to a higher authority. Only speculation. Ty to the Health Dept.

Incorrect. Only 1 group will determine whether or not the place stays open: People who are willing to trade their money for what the business offers. As of today, there are probably too few to keep the lights on.

Rat poo everywhere and literally sharing the bread with the mice is not a “mistake” it’s a standard of cleanliness, an extremely ignorant and dangerously low one. What blows my mind is that there are people preparing and selling food to the public that need to be told to :

“thoroughly clean and sanitize all food storage and service areas…store all food items in rodent-proof containers… cover and protect all dishes, utensils, and food equipment …clean and sanitize all work surfaces …and identify and seal all vermin entry points ”

🤮 At this point I’m.wondering what local eateries don’t have roaches and rodents?

Sounds like it was more than a “mistake”. Unless serious neglect is just a boo boo

I’ve said it before and here it is again, The county health dept. needs to make it a whole bunch easier to look up the current restaurant reports. As it is now one must click though a half dozen links to access the reports. It should be a simple link that takes one to the reports as in type in the restaurants name or the city / town and there it is. LOCO used to have them on their website for a period of time but quit. More than likely the self proclaimed queen Angie C. ( I can guess what the C stands for) didn’t agree with it.

For all the nay sayers Hot Brew is a excellent place to eat. I will be back. If only you knew how many places this happens to that are not reported you’d be eating at home . That is if your home is clean. Love ya Cheri.

We had good experiences at Hot Brew until about a year ago. Last time we were there, the table was dirty, the service was slow, and the food wasn’t great.

My parents owned five restaurants as I grew up i used to be a certified set by trade and have degrees in hotel motel restaurant management, food service health and sanitation and culinary arts.

Running a restaurant can be very hectic and overwhelming. I am not going to sit and make excuses for uncleansliness, although nInevitably this can happen when you own a restaurant. Nobody on this planet is perfect, we all make mistakes. The fact of the matter is that restaurants and food attracts critters. I know for a fact as I am writing this that Cheri is taking measures to this mishap that I can assure you it was not intentional nor was it slothfulness. I’m convinced that that it was an oversight that in the future Will not be overlooked. CHERI’S employees are an excellent team that she has on board. Hands down CHERE is one of the most kind, loving, hard-working.Human beings i have ever met in my life. The food is outstanding and is the best breakfast that I have found in all of humble county. Let us not convict or scrutinize this situation but Let us support. One of our finest members of our community through this time that she needs our support most.

I agree. Hot Brew is a really cool eatery with great food and the owner is a sweet, caring, friendly person. She’s also always struck me as kind of a neat freak in a good way so I’m going to assume this was not willful neglect unless a pattern emerges. It also looks like she worked hard to regain compliance is as little as 24 hours so knowing her, I’d expect she’ll stay on top of this.

Hot Brew has long been one of my favorite local restaurants so I’ll keep returning unless issues unexpectedly persist. With that being said, I just ate there a few days ago and am admittedly a bit grossed out. Food and service were great though.

The place was shut down for one day. It obviously didn’t take much time to resolve the problem and clean the place up. Sounds like someone is making a mountain out of a mole hill. Gotta wonder if someone just has it in for the owners.

If “It obviously didn’t take much time to resolve the problem and clean the place up.“,
then why didn’t the employees and owners choose to resolve the ongoing, extensive and obvious filth instead of requiring the involvment of Humboldt County’s Division of Environmental Health (and their use of taxpayer funds to do their jobs) and subject themselves to the extensive scorn here and elsewhere that they rightly earned?

Wow. I had to look that up. Just wow. Humans! Of course that’s a thing. Could you imagine being that desperate for a cup that you look at those beans and ask, “eh, how bad can it be?” Hey, it could be a job opportunity for someone: sorting out the beans.

For anyone wondering:

Civet coffee. An interesting flavor brew and highly sought after since it’s a rare form of bean. Would try it once just to brag to all my buddies.

Why is it people are so ok with this? This has been happening for years! YOU WERE EATING RAT POP!! And the owner and employees knew it! Why would you go back after to support a business owner that poisoned you? Do you think maybe she allowed old food to be sold also? People need to wake up!! This is not okay! I will never step foot in a restaurant that has had issues in the past with the health department.
