Firefighters were dispatched early this evening to a vegetation fire east of Redway across from Shop Smart, according to reports over the scanner.

Initial information from witnesses indicated the fire was burning up the hillside about 100 feet off Redwood Drive in an area where several homeless camps are located. One observer described the incident as a debris fire burning in vegetation above the roadway.

Both Redway Fire Protection District and Garberville Fire Protection District were reportedly called out to respond.

The fire was first reported around 5:47 p.m. Witnesses at the scene said the flames were visible up the hill across from the Shop Smart store.

The Incident Commander described seeing a 20′ by 20′ trash pile. He is having firefighters lay hose to the flames.

This is a developing situation, and information may change as firefighters assess conditions on scene.
