Press release from City of Eureka:traffic light [Image from the County of Humboldt]

The City of Eureka will be performing a traffic signal reconfiguration at the above location in Eureka beginning Friday, March 13th, 2026 at 2 p.m.

The eastbound and westbound travel lanes on Buhne Street will have a new traffic signal configuration featuring a [Split] Phasing traffic pattern. This new traffic signal configuration at Buhne Street and S Street will service eastbound Buhne travel lanes singularly and then terminate, followed by the service of westbound Buhne travel lanes.

Intersection will have signage on Buhne Street notifying users of the signal work configuration.

The patience and cooperation of motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians in the vicinity of the of the Buhne Street and S Street is greatly appreciated while the traffic signal reconfiguration is being implemented.

The City of Eureka realizes that this disruption is an inconvenience, but maintaining the City’s streets infrastructure is vital to the health and safety of our residents.

Yes, it is. We also need a stoplight at the intersection of Elk River and Herrick. I’ve seen it backed up on Elk River 12 cars deep in the morning waiting to make a turn. It’s ridiculous.

I dunno. People say a roundabout which I think would just be a new game of demolition derby. A light might be a 6 of one, half dozen of another fix, that is the back up on Elk R. would just be a back up from people across the bridge or up the hill. I’d say there could to be two lights actually. There and one right at Vance by the school. Herrick is an absolute race track as it is.

People blow red lights all the time, especially in Eureka. The nice thing about roundabouts is that they have to slow down because concrete, so any crashes would be low speed fender benders, not fatalities.

What does “Spit Phasing traffic pattern” mean? Is that a typo?

Paul, it appears that was a typo in the press release submitted by the City of Eureka. We don’t generally edit press releases but to reduce confusion, we put corrected the typo and put it in brackets.

If drivers pay attention to the traffic signals, this shouldn’t be a problem for anyone.
