An estimated 100 community members gathered in front of the Humboldt County Courthouse Sunday at noon to recognize International Women’s Day. The group explained that the gathering had mostly been organized by word-of-mouth and email exchange.

Felicity Barstow was at the rally with her partner, enjoying the sunny afternoon and rallying in solidarity with other Women’s March planned rallies from coast to coast.  Barstow said, “[W]e’re still out here to promote women’s rights. It’s an issue that sometimes gets forgotten and pushed to the side.” When asked what she felt were the important current topics of concern, she explained that there are big picture worries as well as specific policies that are of concern.

Barstow told RHBB, “If we don’t have support for our women, then our children aren’t supported as well,” adding that women in the US “still have pay inequality that needs to be dealt with, and, of course, women’s autonomy for them to choose what they want to do with their own bodies and with their own lives.”

Citing concern for the Save Act, Barstow noted that if adopted, many people could lose voting access. She said, “[I]f your birth certificate doesn’t match your current name, then you may not be able to vote.”

Another local woman who assisted in spreading the word about the International Women’s Day rally via email explained that protesting regularly, and on particular holidays like President’s Day and International Women’s Day, for example, is important for keeping topics of concern in the public discourse. “We are the United States of amnesia,” said KT, “and we forget so easily.”

KT noted that peaceful protesting is one way to advocate for social and political change, telling RHBB, “See the need, do the deed.”

Concerns about women’s rights were a recurring theme at the rally. “Right now,” according to a report by the United Nations, “women have only 64 per cent of the legal rights that men hold worldwide.” The report states that in “fundamental areas of life, including work, money, safety, family, property, mobility, business, and retirement – the law systematically disadvantages women.”

The UN explained recently that the “latest report ‘Ensuring and Strengthening Access to Justice for All Women and Girls’ warns that the very systems meant to protect women and girls are failing them—leaving them exposed to abuse, injustice, and impunity amid a growing backlash against gender equality and increasing violations of their fundamental rights.”

At the rally, women’s rights supporters shared camaraderie and music. Early on in the afternoon the Raging Grannies serenaded the group as a chorus of honking traffic passed going north on Highway 101 through Eureka.

Several of the signs on display referenced various concerns for the state of democracy in general, while others were more specific. Some signs were seen referencing Minneapolis, impeachment of President Trump, and due process protections.

Interesting people.

The Raging Grannies (or just “Raging Grannies”) are activist organizations in many cities and towns in Canada, the United States, and other countries.[1] The first group started in VictoriaBritish ColumbiaCanada, in 1986–87.
They are social justice  activists, all women old enough to be grandmothers who dress up in clothes that mock stereotypes of older women , and sing songs at protests.. They typically write the lyrics themselves, putting their political messages to the tunes of well-known songs.

OK, now bring on the haters.

Thanks for the info…

In Lake County, we have the “Entitled Grannies”, who can be found on HOA Boards and in Swimming Pools everywhere, doing “Water aerobics”, also known as “Blobbing” in Hawaii…

Yak, yak, yak, and take out your hearing aids when approaching…

These protesters are all over the place, but don’t worry, Mr Trump has started a big fucking war to “Unite the country” while enriching his friends…

He might have raped someone under the age of 18, once or twice, but I bet no one is talking about it…

I liked the theory about Trump being a Russian Asset, though…

I hope they all realize that if they weren’t in America there’s a good chance they’d be jailed or executed for what their doing , especially holding signs accusing the country’s leader of raping kids. Wtf is standing on a sidewalk with a sign yelling at the cars going bye going to do ya we heard you. You think u have it bad here then leave and and just go see what’s out there , you probably won’t make it back acting like that.

I lived overseas, only in two other continents, but from my experience, I respectfully disagree. Sure there are areas where you are undoubtably right, but I challenge you to get out of this country because the “We’re number one” thing is an embarrassment to Americans. We’re just a part of an interconnected world; ask any person who’s seen the planet from space. There are vast swathes of the world where people not only don’t care about what Americans think, they don’t even know that other people think they should care what the Yankees think. We’re number one indeed.
Having said that, politicians do care what their constituents think. Those in office will even go to war to distract the ongoing narrative, because protests are a real threat. Like it or don’t.

I not only lived in two other countries but was in the midst of protests in both too. And in both countries, it resulted in police breaking lots heads , mass arrests and firing of government employees who participated.

BTW Jackdad never said anything about being “number one.” You said those words, not him. He said protesters have rights in the US not commonly found in other places. He’s correct- it’s because the right to “petition” is literally in the Consitution. And people doing so are not charged with libel because of the bit about freedom of speech in the same document. If you can’t find a least some pride in a country that was created by such a document 250 years ago, that other countries around the world have used as a model, then that’s not a defect of Jackdad.

I whole heartedly agree. I have spent a lot of time traveling the world. I love America, but there are places that are way way way way way better. For example, Netherlands. Land of the free? I thought so also until I went to New Zealand. We are the land of the fee, not free.

Yep. Try this in Iran or gaza or Pakistan or most African countries. If you think you would be OK to push this misguided or slanderous message, please tell me how you would be treated.
Where do they get the pedo sex crimes narrative anyway? From E. Gene? That nutbox? Or do they think Trump was at Epstein Island?
Its probably a good thing these old hags all aborted their babies.

I think sane people were already stressed out when they realized that it’s not just conspiracy theories about their leaders being involved in child sex, sacrifice ceremonies, and human trafficking. I don’t think people involved in that kind of stuff really flinch at the thought of causing more destruction that doesn’t really affect them.

Even if I brought you to where it was happening live you would still say it’s not enough proof so I know you will reject this very solid example of proof, but it is real and I gave you exactly what you asked for in a format that you are able to see and not say it’s too much to read or look at.

its the ”accusing” our dear leader, that is offensive. It is only an accusation. One of a dozen others the left cant prove about President Trump. ”OH…but he is convicted of blablabla…..” He was convicted of trumped up changes by a bias jury, in both cases. We do not accept any of that, while Biden walks free.

Surprised to not see more local outrage around two women needlessly dying due to negligence around CO detectors. The instances were only days apart and were completely avoidable. I understand frustration with the system as a whole but when we so quickly forget local lives lost I wonder if we’ve also lost the plot.

God bless America, however you feel about your homeland or where you live is your choice . I thank God we have that here in America. I’m not going on America’s number one rant not saying that at all just saying that all the injustices and unfairness and unlawful things that most protesters are protesting about they’re allowed to do, so how is it an injustice or unlawful or unfair. If you want an abortion go get one I’m pretty sure it’s available in our area if you want your voice to be heard and your signs to be seen we hear you and we see you you’re in front of a government building yelling and screaming causing a disruptence and nothing’s happening to you. Quite the Injustice huh? I think the community needs to prioritize and get their heads out of their ass, it’s astonishing to see people especially in numbers that will fight for something that is morally wrong or is an injustice or unlawful and unfair or just downright wrong and they know it deep in their hearts. I have my opinions about things and my thoughts but in all honesty what am I going to be able to do about anything I keep most of it to myself and don’t cause a scene in public or on the Internet trying to get people to believe what I believe. One thing I do believe that somebody should not be persecuted because of their beliefs I believe things should not be pushed on our kids and I believe family orientation should be prioritized I believe God should be prioritized and I feel strongly about this and I understand feeling strongly about something. But calling someone names accusing them of horrible crimes assuming their way of life because of certain decisions or beliefs that they make or have is wrong.

There’s a quite long list of medical conditions and scenarios that say you are extremely misinformed.

Ever heard of an ectopic pregnacy?
Just 1 from the list.

Pregnant Mother’s in the USA are now dying (or suffering lifelong permanent injuries) where previously they would’ve received medical care and survived.
THE US has the highest maternal death rate of any advanced country…and ours is far worse than Cuba’s.

Non‑citizens already can’t vote in federal elections — that’s been illegal for decades. What you posted doesn’t line up with the actual law, and it might be worth stepping back and looking at the facts.

That’s absolute garbage.
You are repeating drivel without doing any due diligence into the actual facts and understanding the issue yourself.

The save act is a thinly veiled attempt to stop American Citizens from voting by erecting useless & unnecessary barriers to voting.

Non-naturalized immigrants have NEVER been allowed to vote in the USA. NEVER.

Numerous Bipartisan studies done by Congress since the 1990s have shown again and again that attempts to vote by illegal immigrants are exceedingly low; less than 100 attempts per national voting cycle.
As is citizen voter fraud.
AND they get caught.

Evidence strongly suggests the Phoenicians, particularly semites in Carthage, practiced child sacrifice as a ritual to appease deities like Baal Hammon and Tanit. Archaeological findings in “Tophets” (special cemeteries) revealed thousands of urns containing cremated infant remains, often buried alongside sacrificed animals.  Hope this helps!

If abortions are not healthcare, then neither are vasectomies!

What I’m hearing you say is that healthcare providers should not offer procedures that enable people to partake in sexual intercourse, without facing the natural consequences (reproduction.)

It applies to both sexes. I don’t know why my friend who has a vasectomy gets to have sex with his wife without flack, while I’m called a “murderer” for having had an abortion. It’s a rough double-standard, but if you don’t see that, I guess you can’t fix stupid.

Maybe all men who have vasectomies are truly Murderers, if you want to follow the slippery slope of late Charlie Kirk’s logic, Peace Upon His Soul.

Anyone who makes blanket statements about abortions is simply oblivious. I have personally known two women who died carrying a pregnancy. I’ve had a couple in my own family who had life long health issues from their pregnancies.

Nothing is as simple as your strange interpretation about a 2000 year old society applies to the risks that women take in childbirth. And you should show more respect towards the people who are the ones who take the risks.
