UPDATE 6:40 p.m.: A teenage bicyclist was involved in a collision with a vehicle around 1:49 p.m. near Horrell Street and the 300 block of Bonanza Street in McKinleyville.

Initial scanner traffic and dispatch information suggested the incident involved a serious injury. But in an update provided to Redheaded Blackbelt at 6:40 p.m., the bicyclist, Trinity Ascar, said she had been pulling out of her father’s driveway while wearing headphones when a car came by. She said she tried to brake but collided with the vehicle.

According to Ascar, the driver and passenger helped her to the sidewalk after the collision. Emergency responders arrived and treated her at the scene.

“I tried to brake break and then I hit the car,” she said. “It was a man and a woman and they sat me down on the sideway. They called 911. The EMTs came. I have a couple of scrapes on my face. I have a scrape on my knee and my elbow. I didn’t need to go to the hospital.”

Earlier reports indicating a serious head injury were incorrect.

I sure hope that 13-year-old girl will be ok. By receiving a head injury, I would think she either did not have a helmet or one of the bike helmets which really don’t protect you very well, but they are better than nothing. I also very sorry for the vehicle driver. Thank you to all the great first responders for coming to her aid.

Insensitivity, or a teaching moment?
This is why it’s illegal to wear headphones while bicycling.

A huge thank you to the man and woman in the vehicle that the girl hit for helping her to the sidewalk and calling 911. The world sure could use more kind and caring folks like you!
