As colder weather settles across Humboldt County, the Betty Kwan Chinn Homeless Foundation is ready to accept people seeking shelter at its facility in Eureka.
The foundation’s center at 133 Seventh Street operates an overnight shelter from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., with dinner and breakfast provided, and a warming center open from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. offering chairs, computers, and dry socks.
In a phone interview with Redheaded Blackbelt, Betty Chinn encouraged anyone needing shelter to arrive before 6 p.m., noting that staff can open additional space if needed.
Chinn said pets are welcome at the center, explaining that animals are often essential companions for those seeking shelter. “They’re part of their life,” she said.
She added that the shelter environment remains calm and respectful. “People are really good. They just come in, eat, go to sleep. No fighting.” Chinn reiterated that people in need of shelter are simply tired, cold, and want to rest.

And thank you, Betty Chinn!
This is an important service. Even critical. Thank you for opening the doors for people to sleep and eat for the night. And warm up during the day!
