And then as soon as able, merge back into the Number Two lane. It’s now a vehicle code violation to cruise in the Number One lane on a two lane highway. That lane is now reserved for allowing merging traffic onto the freeway and for passing only.

People really suck at merging onto 101. I’ve had people not even look, just keep on merging. But the best is merging while looking at a phone. I’m not claiming this happened in this incident or blaming anyone.
Me neither, but I have had several experiences locally over the years wherein the merging vehicle assumed right-of-way over the mainstream vehicles. Pedal to the metal, second star to the right, straight ahead until mourning. Very scary, especially if you can’t get over in avoidance.
You ever drive northbound into Arcata via the Samoa Blvd. offramp? Riding home in a bus one day, some twit in a pickup was in the merging lane from the southbound offramp and not once did he glance to his left to see the giant bus he was about to merge into. I know, I was watching him. The driver had to slam on the brakes to avoid a crash; luckily no one was hurt. Drivers, man. SMH.

The at fault driver might have had an urgent text to answer.
Driver’s rarely slow down there, instead opting to speed up because they are important.
Another location where people should move into the left lane as neither entering traffic nor right lane drivers can see merging traffic

Raining, turn on your headlights so other people can see you and move over to the #1 lane.
But not your high beams please.
I hope no one was badly injured.
