CAL FIRE Closes Road 500 in Jackson Demonstration State Forest Due to Illegal Dumping

Press release from CAL FIRE – Mendocino Unit:

Cal Fire press release featureCAL FIRE’s Jackson Demonstration State Forest (JDSF) has closed Road 500, between County Road 408 and JDSF Road 600, effective immediately.

The closure is due to an increase in illegal trash dumping along Road 500, County Road 408, and other forest roads. Closing the road will also help prevent damage during wet weather and protect the forest’s infrastructure.

During the closure, motorized vehicles are not allowed, including motorcycles and ATVs, in accordance with California regulations. However, the road remains open for non-motorized use, such as walking, biking, and horseback riding.

JDSF staff will continue cleanup efforts and evaluate long-term solutions. Road 500 will reopen once conditions improve, and the dumping issue is addressed.

Visitors are encouraged to help keep the forest clean by packing out trash and reporting illegal dumping.

Let’s get that location put on the 2026 visitors information guide.

Only two legged pigs dump their trash on our forest lands. I would look through the trash to hopefully find some mail with people’s names on them. Give the information to law enforcement to locate and fine the pigs.

Law enforcement will do no such thing. They cannot prove the mail in the trash belongs to the trash depositor. But I wish that it was different.

I would certainly think law enforcement could at least speak to the people with names in the trash. If they are guilty, it will be written all over their face. That would hopefully stop them from doing it again.

Punishing the whole due to the poor choices of a few bad actors again, how pathetic, not to mention it doesn’t solve the problem, the dumpers will dump elsewhere, I wanna see these trash dumpers get caught and their photos plastered up on the wall of shame. It seems game cams in the dump zones as well as signs warning of game cams would be more effective and keep the State Forest Roads open for the rest of us. Also; if you see a truck or trailer filled with trash heading out to our forest roads, write down the license number and get a description of the vehicle and call the sheriff department to report. Together we can find a better way to protect what is left of our redwood forests.

Surveillance and enforcement is the answer.

Totally. If I can monitor my 3 miles of road with an arlo camera then I’m sure it can be done by larger forest owners. There is no denying it when you get caught on camera.

Getting caught is one thing, getting judges to jail violators is another.

Agreed. Surveillance cameras that use solar power and can run 24/7 is a great idea. Just hide the cameras really well so the piggies can’t see them.

Put up trail cameras and bust these dirt bags who ruin our rights to access these lands. Fine them and throw them in jail.
