Our reporter, Ryan Hutson, arrived shortly after the crash and spoke with the driver of the truck, who said he failed to notice the traffic signal had turned red. The driver explained that traffic ahead of him had been moving quickly and he did not realize the light had changed while he was still in motion.

The truck driver should pay more attention to signal lights when he is driving. If his truck would have hit the Subaru in the driver’s door chances are the Subaru driver could have been injured or possibly killed. Running a red light should come with a big fat ticket!
Running a red has always come with a sizeable penalty.
In fact, it’s a $489 penalty.
Plus a point or two
Agreed. Driver’s probably thinking about how he’s going to pay for that new pickup.
Not paying attention….is not a valid defense
Fun fact: every corner of this intersection, and the one on I St, has had someone plow into or through it or end up in the middle of the park. Some multiple times. See the larger trees in the pic I posted? There was one on the I St side years ago until someone in a large pick-up toppled it. There’s a home across the street that has had to repair or replace its corner wall at least 10 times that I can think of. Buhne and H/I intersections are magnets for light-runners, hence the $489 fine signage.
When I approach an intersection in Eureka such as this one, which I often cross, I remind myself to pause after my light turns green to make sure nobody is running a run light coming towards me, as the pickup driver did in this case. For driving in Eureka, it’s a matter of self-preservation. The poll question in LOCO two days ago was “Are more people running red lights these days?”
The come like a bullet and as deadly.
I always look at the signal light prior to entering the intersection.
The clue that I look for to tell if the light is about to turn red is when it turns yellow.
Red means stop
green means go
yellow= speed up
Jeff Bridges said just that in the 1984 movie Starman.
By choosing not to flee the scene and apparently being sober, the driver of the truck completely failed to uphold community standards.
Lots of accidents right there. My was was hit there years ago.
But there sure are some nice bike lanes now.😡
A bike lane (I) that I watched someone drive all the way down in yesterday, and finally turned on 10th St. In the bike lane the whole way.
I saw someone do the same at I and Buhne about a week ago. With the exception of parking or pulling into or out of a driveway, the bike lane may only be crossed into when the line separating the bike and vehicle lanes becomes dotted near an intersection. This law goes back decades and is in fact, or used to be, in the driver’s handbook. Only @$$holes need not follow the rules.
